I think I mentioned this movie in my thread about good movies I saw in 2006. I guess someone else caught a sneak preview of it recently, and I have to say, his review is the greatest, most accutate and freaking hilarious review I have EVER read. Don't worry, there aren't any spoilers.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/31520 That IS a fraking awesome review.
Not only is that the best review I've ever read, but I loved it so much I gave it to Kurt Johnstad (screenwriter). I showed it to Gerard himself, I'm not sure how he took it (he's a bit busy, what with the premiere). I also gave it to my wife... and it somehow found its way to Theatrical New Releases at Warner Bros., who demanded the guy's name and website. NOT because they want to hang him, they LOVED it too!
Hahahahahaha!

I was watching History channel last night and it was about this event and how it happened in History... what an amazing story. 300 Spartons against (between) 300,000 and 1 million persians on a pass that was between a 5,000 cliff and the ocean.
If anyone ever deserved to own the "Bad Ass Motherfucker" wallet from Pulp Fiction...these are the dudes.

There was also 700 Thespians that fought with them. The entire Greek army was only about 5000 strong (including the 1000 at Thermopylae) but Leonidas thought that the army should be split up so that all was not lost in this one battle. The Spartans were touted as the most bad-ass the Greece had to offer, but to be fair, they did have some help.... even though it still wasn't much and they almost kicked the crap out of the entire Persian army. What they did manage to do was inspire the rest of the Greeks to fight back the Persians, which they did after the Persians martched in and sacked Athens.
This is why I'm afraid to go see this movie with my wife... she's getting her doctorate in ancient history... so I hear the real details all the time. "That's not right! It was like this..." :p
Sorry for not sounding educated in history.. but since I'm not, it's usually how I tend to sound.
Some small spec of memory recalls it as a past event that happened back in the day, but I also heard it was graphic novel that the movie is based off of.
I could technically go do the research myself but I tend to get lazy. I'm trying to plan my day to watch this tomorrow some time. Looks kick ass.
Eff.. well there is some info that just posted while typing this. I'll go read it.
i can't wait to see this...it looks neato!

Black Snake Moan is supposed to be really good actually. Anyway saw the midnight premiere last night and I thought Sin City was better but overall a really good movie nice simple but well thought out story.

Yes, it was a real event in history (see above)... Yes, the movie is actually based off Frank Miller's graphic novel (same guy who did Sin City) so the movie and history might not exactly line up.

Em.. can the guys quit complaining?? You guys knew it would be a sausage fest so cut the crap about the naked men. There was never any actual male nudity anyways.
On an actual critique about the movie... I thought there was just a lil too much slow motion scenes in the movie. Its great for some action scenes but for the 'dramatic' parts where nothing much is going on... it was a bit excessive.
I also felt the whole bit with Queen Gorgo and that councilman guy was pretty stupid. I hate it when movies take intelligent people and have them do stupid things. Clearly he was not a character to be trusted... but of course she blindly does and they make this feeble attempt to salvage her character by having her kill him. * yawn * Those were my only real objections.
Other than that I was happy that someone had warned me of the lack of story.. its true. Special effects were phenomenal of course. Fighting scenes of course were just awesome.
Overall good movie... but you guys are hyping it up way too much.

I kept laughing at parts of the movie just thinking about other flicks. the first time someone got stuck all the way thru, my buddy and I both did the "hhheeeeeeeeyyyyyyy" from SinCity.
any one else make the holy handgrenade connection from monty python.
usually commericals make movies seem way better than it is, in the case of 300 it was the complete opposite, i thought the movie would suck after watching the commericals and didnt plan to see it even though i heard everyone and their moms hype it up
however i saw it due to a situation and it was one of the best movies i have ever seen, in fact i plan to go see it again this week even though i just saw it on saturday night!

In the traditional history, the unit only selected men who had children old enough to take over as head of the family if they were killed.
Just saw it and I loved it! There were two lesbians getting it on three rows down from me and my wife, but even that couldn't distract me from the carnage on the screen. Every time a certain spartan appeared on screen it was like looking in the mirror for me. I was pleased with that, until I realised that it was every time the hunchback appeared.
Funnily enough, "hunchback" in Scottish is "humpitybackit".

Few things I didn't like...
I didn't like the environments at all... I couldn't help but feel like the entire movie was shot in a medium sized warehouse. I kept thinking "if one of those guys falls too far back, he might knock the painted backdrop over". I know it wasn't a painted backdrop, but that's just kinda how it felt.
Same thing metioned earlier about the Queen trusting the councilman... totally out of character for someone who seemed fairly intelligent.
Freak show Xerxes.
And normally I would add that they demonized the Persians too much while cheesily glorifying the Spartans, which would probably be based on my own my own bias... but then I realized 95% of the US doesn't even know the relationship between Persia and Iran...
*
All in all... definitely something I'll watch... every night... before going out... to get those killer instincts going. Haha... :)

Som, glad to see your responses. Just a couple of comments;
1. The entire movie WAS shot in a warehouse. I've got all the studio photos that I would be happy to show you ( by contract though, I can't post or send them out, sorry). They did this to stay under budget, get practical filming done in under 2 months, and to add the "graphic novel" look that was a big part of the Sin City success.
2. Yeah, I understand your bias about the Persians, etc. I don't totally understand the backlash coming out of Iran though, because rigth from the start (director)Zak Snyder emphatically stated that this movie is NOT intended to be historically accurate. He said it in interviews, at the Comicon forum, and at the private screening we had on the WB lot over a year ago, before there was really even any buzz about this yet. It's practically the first thing out of his mouth everytime.
It wasn't so much that I felt insulted or anything... the problem I had was that they just, well, kinda overdid it.
"Hey hey we're the awesome Spartans and we're honorable and great and treat our women with respect and hardcore and badass etc etc etc..."
"Those mean bad Persian guys are all cruel slave drivers who torture and eat their prisoners and beat everyone's women and rape their babies etc etc etc..."
I mean... I got the point. Over and over again. As much as I loved the "Spartans! What is your profession?" line, I thought there was too much "We're Spartans! So we're [insert some self-glorifying expression here]!"
Who knows though... while I feel like the movie could have been equally bad-ass without all those lines, maybe it would have taken some of the passion out of it. Dunno...

There was passion?
Normally, I would agree with what you're saying Som, but in the case of this movie, it's not meant to be taken seriously. As I've said several times, I like this movie in the same way I liked Independence Day. It was exciting, feel good, whatever, but if I really break it down and look at the flaws, there are just too damn many of them. It's not meant to be real. I mean, since when does the Air Force fly F-18s? It's total nonsense, just like the Persians being all a bunch of freaks. It's based on a comic book.
Anyway, in no means am I trying to argue with you or defend any potential insult. I'm just saying this movie is what it is, a real life cartoon. Try being me and watching the constantly lame Dances with Wolves movies ;)

Ok, after all this time and involvment with 300, I finally saw the finished project. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. I already knew there wasn't much plot or dialogue, so no big there. But I saw this movie last summer when it was supposedly going into post production. At that time, I felt like " ok, this is gonna be cool when they get the completed FX and matte paintings in the background". Lo and behold, here we are in the IMAX glory, and the movie still looked the same!! The "digital backgrounds" DID look like cheap photoshop. Even worse, they looked like old school rearscreen projection. For me, it was like watching a small play, where the actors are on stage, and there is a big painting right behind them. No wonder this film had such a low budget.
Sorry, I know a lot of you liked it, but I thought it was 300lbs of cheese :)

This from my favorite advice columnist, Dan Savage:
With nothing but time on my hands this week, I slipped out of the office and went to the movies. Have you seen 300 yet? It's about a handful of lightly armed ancient Greeks—the Spartans—who take on the mighty and massive Persian army. Some feel the film is homophobic; some feel it's a conservative, pro-war piece of agitprop.
Homophobic? It's Ann Coulter on a meth binge.
The Persian army is an armed gay-pride parade, a threat to all things decent and, er, Greek. The king of the Spartans—among the most notorious boy-fuckers in all of ancient history—dismisses Athenian Greeks as weak-willed "philosophers and boy lovers." The Persian emperor? An eight-foot-tall black drag queen—mascara, painted-on eyebrows, pink lip gloss. Emperor RuPaul is positively obsessed with men kneeling in front of him. Why gay up the Persians? So that straight boys in the theater can identify with the Spartan king and his 300 soldiers—all of whom appear to have been recruited from and outfitted by the International Male catalog.
What isn't up for debate is the film's politics. The only times the Persian army doesn't look like a gay-pride parade in hell, it looks like a crowd of madly chanting Islamic militants. And if the Spartan king has to break the Spartan law to defend Spartan freedoms? Well, sometimes a king's gotta do what a king's gotta do. Because, as the queen of Sparta points out, freedom isn't free. And, yes, she uses exactly those words. George Bush is going to blow a load in his pants when he sees this movie.

Why do people have to find political angles in everything... just enjoy the bloodfest. I personally think the whole movie is about a parents right to choice... you know whether or not to discarded your child into a baby pit if mishapen or small. lol don't tell me your hospital doesn't have a baby pit.

Tue 3/27/07, 8:46AM
Seriously, I may bash this movie in a lot of ways, but none of it has to do with the "story" or "plot". I do admit the Spartans used the terms " free" and "free men" WAY too often, especially since they had slaves themselves, but c'mon, the movie was pure cheese. Next you'll tell me that George Lucas is a racist because the Ewoks so closely resembled Native Americans.
Oh, wait, hm...........

Hypothetical question:
Let's say "300" was flipped around. Now it's about a small band of mincing faggots, dressed up in heels and gowns and fabulous makeup, led by the Emperor RuPaul, shown at the beginning of the movie giving each other rimjobs and admiring each other's sausages.
Then that band of prancing homos spend the rest of the movie kicking brutal, bloody ass on a few thousand straight guys. I mean just grabbing one in each carefully manicured hand and smacking their skulls together until they explode like coconuts dropped from the Sears Tower.
Think that script every would have seen the light of day?

yes I'm sure you will see it at your local gay porn theatres. lol
Its obvious this movie is centered towards straight men... that is where the money is. Although I watched 300 a row in front of 2 gay dudes and you would be hard pressed to tell them the movie wasn't made for them. lol It was rather hilarious. I think the one dude even creamed himself with all the slow mo muscles. lol Something for everyone I guess is the key to a successful movie.

I have to say, I'd be tempted to see it myself, as I think it'd be a riot.
Me too. I think it'd be the funniest thing since "Repo Man."

morbidelli17,
Look at this inkblot, and tell me what you see:

The meaning of any content is socially constructed by the actors and the audience. What you see, and claim to infer as a hidden subtext, depends on how you interpret the inkblot/movie.

I saw that inkblot. That's the filthiest thing you've ever posted. I am appalled ...
:D
You are absolutely right. Meaning is created by the audience, not by the author. But the author can know what meanings an audience will make from a text; That's what Madison Avenue charges all that money for.

Existence has no pattern save what we imagine after staring at it for too long.

Okay.. so I was bored and add a hint of dork and this is what happens...
Looking for the SV300.
We SV riders have descended from Sheene himself. Taught never to ride in the blind spot. Taught that accelerating through the turn is the greatest glory one could achieve in their life. SV Riders: the finest riders the world has ever known.
The world will know that a few stood against many, that free riders stood against a tyrant of egos and by the time this battle is over, that even a Harley Rider can wave.
See, rumor has it that the CBR riders have already submitted to this act of snobbishness. A new age has come, an age of freedom. And all will know that 300 SV Riders gave their last ride to defend it.
I need 300 SVRiders at 300 seperate McDonalds by midnight tonight. That is where we will fight. That is where they will wave!
Lets Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide!

Just watched this several hours ago. Good ol' chopping bodies up kept me awake through the whole movie. Reminded me of "Gladiator" though a different time period and people.
I'm not a guy, but I still thought it was a good movie. Not just for the half-naked men.

I hung out with Noel yesterday and told him that I was really disappointed in both the movie and graphic novel. I thought he was gonna shit himself. He told me my comments were straight up blasphemy, lol.

Personally, I think it's all about how you approach the movie. I didn't go in expecting a retelling of actual events from history. Instead, I went in drunk.
But seriously, the ancient (and even modern) Greeks are known for their exaggerated story telling and larger than life heroic battles. The movie was portrayed in a similar format. The narrator was like an old Greek man telling his grandkids of the story, sensationalized, exaggerated, full of pride and mythical in nature. It helps to have another glass of wine too.
