Cool pics! I need some pics of me riding in turns and playing the violin. Except for the violin part. I wish I could. Violins are awesome.

Violin or Viola?

(from an ex-viola and cello player - much regret, long story) - though I can still beat a mandolin and mandola into submission without major injury.

When/where you play? Keep us updated!

I teach violin, piano, and viola although my main instrument is violin. I don't really get to play too much, but sometimes I go back to my ol college out in Thousand Oaks and play with the orchestra there. Its really hard to find time to really sit down and work on something myself.

Great to hear someone still performing classical music...

I studied oboe for 12 years, still wish I had been able to get my Music Performance degree, but a conservatory just requires far too much dedication, and I really wanted to enjoy life (between being in a practice room for 4 hours a day and making reeds I had time to sleep and occasionally to eat)... I sold my oboe last year and I still am not sure where the money went, although I don't miss it, because its not a pick up and play when you feel like it instrument...

BTW, I think a well played viola is one of my favorite instruments ever... My friend performed the Bartok Viola Concerto while I was in school and it was by far my favorite performance I heard while I was there...

Sorry for the reminiscing... I'm done now

nothing wrong with reminiscing. Its always nice to meet other people who have common interests. I hear ya with the intense practice sessions... I never really got THAT serious into it. I'd say I'm pretty good (been playing for 17 years) but by all means not a professional performer. Anybody else play anything?

Piano - Studied classical for 10 years until I went to college. I liked to play, but there were so many things I wanted to do, that I didn't want to devote most of my time to just piano.

Now I'm trying to teach my kids to play and get an ear for music.

I also play the zither.

My parents sent me to piano lessons for three years but it didn't take. It's more like I'm memorizing the motions and less like I'm playing the instrument, and I never really got over that barrier. Every few Christmases I re-learn a few carols.

I've found that it either clicks really quickly... or it never does...

Some kids start playing an instrument and you see in their eyes that they just get it... I've known others who play for 10 years and still are going through the motions...

its true that some kids take better to it than others but sometimes you just have to give it a little time. I have one student who was so crappy to try and teach, then out of nowhere she started practicing and magically she started sounding pretty damn good. How about that :P

Talent is one thing, perseverance (and practice) is another. The key thing is whether in your heart, you really want to do it or not.

I have deep envy for people who can just sit down at a piano or pick up a guitar and play.
