What is out there for playing your mp3 player through your stereo or home sound system? I would love to listen to my mp3 player on shuffle somewhere other than with headphones or on my cpu, since the files are also on my cpu.

If your stereo has a pair of RCA inputs on the back that are free (might be a tape or AUXiliary input) then you only need a 3.5mm stereo to RCA cable (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2456454&cp=&pg=1&searchSort=TRUE&sr=1&y=8&origkw=mini+to+RCA&kw=mini+to+rca&x=10&s=A-StorePrice-RSK&parentPage=search) to connect from the Mp3 players headphone jack to the stereo.

If you have no inputs left on the stereo, you can use an FM transmitter (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102699&cp=2032054.2222882.2224127&pg=1&allCount=107&fbn=Type%2FFM+transmitters&searchSort=TRUE&f=PAD%2FProduct+Type%2FFM+transmitters&fbc=1&y=7&x=12&s=A-StorePrice-RSK&parentPage=family) to broadcast the music through an unused radio station, but the quality isn't as good as a direct hookup. These devices also work in your car...

The RadioShack links are just for example, there are many options for both methods of hookup, available anywhere electronic gadgets are sold.

Sound good?

Ah, yes, I see. I would have tried looking for something for the other hole in the player, the usb hook up. Ha Ha. Thanks!! And yes, a direct hook up was what I was looking for. Not a fm transmitter.

Thanks Evan!

Agirls,

Instead of the 3.5mm jack to RCA input, do an 'iPod' to RCA input. They sell cables that are specific for the iPod. In my experience, the sound is better, and you don't have to muck around with the volume settings on the iPod each time you plug it in. Also, you can wire in power as well so that your iPod charges while you drive.

As for home stereo, they sell a number of iPod docks that hook up to the inputs on the back. I've also done the 3.5mm jack to RCA input for my home stereo as well.

Yes, if I was talking about an iPod!! ;)

I do not use an iPod. The boyfriend however has an iPod nano so I may have to get one of those docks for his.

oh, then, by all means, 3.5 headphone jack to left/right RCA jack works fine. I actually run both a 3.5 headphone jack AND an iPod connector into the same RCA (auxillary) inputs in my car.

Why not just a get a good set of CPU Speakers? I have an older version of the Klipsch 2.1 ProMedia speakers and they rock! Tons of bass, decent midrange.. best $130 I've spent.

I have Klipsch speakers on my cpu..... I also have Klipsch speakers on my home entertainment center indoors and outdoors separate from the cpu, which is where I wanted to plug the mp3 player. The cord mentioned above works. Need to get a docking station for the ipod so we can have better sound for those Klipsch speakers. ;)
