The best shop I've been to in LA is definitely Hammy Boys, on Lincoln in Santa Monica. The guys there are really friendly, eager to help you out, find gear that really fits you. They gave me a great deal on my JR leather jacket, and special ordered it (and sent it back for a different size when it didn't fit).

definitely worth visiting.

Hey Paul, you should bump that rating for Lee's Cycle up to 6 stars.... They are back logged two weeks for work and I expained my situation w/the chain and they said sure, bring it in. We'll do it today... :D Nice guys over there. Now I gotta see if they will give me the *socalriders* discount. Even tho I don't really frequent their site very much......

This a is a mom and pop operation. Quality service and everyone is very friendly. I've been going there for a year now and they've got my loyalty.

BAD

Cycle Products West

On Pico in West LA/Santa Monica.

I've made a mini mission out of warning people about this place. Not only was the staff unfriendly and creepy, one of the guys tried to convince me that my bike needed several hundred dollars worth of service because it was "leaking oil". I, of course, uprighted my bike to check the oil window, and the pr*ck PULLED BY BIKE OVER so that the oil guage would read like it was low. Not only was that unscupulous, it was a complete insult to my intelligence. I hate being insulted.

From what I understand, they used to be alright, but that's not the case anymore now that they're under new management.

Cycle Products West: I haven't had any work done there, but I've been in the shop before...it is so ghetto, I don't know how they make enough to pay the rent! That must be why they have to rip people off!

Hammy Boys, Santa Monica: Bought products from them, no service yet. But they seem cool and knowledgeable, they've built racing SV's (which they showed me in the back), and Hammy said they will match any price, even off the Internet!!

Del Amo Motorsports, Redondo Beach: They seem to know what they are doing, but they are expen$ive!!! Parts guys aren't all that helpful either...

Hermosa Motorsports: These are the guys who charged me $150 to solve my carb problem after a rejet. They told me that they had to cut the spring on the carb linkage because one of the butterflies wasn't closing all the way...but it turns out that all they did was sync the carbs...prob took them all of 10 minutes. They originally wanted to charge me $200!! Rip off...

Basically, I don't trust anyone to work on my bike now, unless it is something completely over my head!!!

Let me just say that the guys over at Cycle Gear on Convoy are the greatest!

I bought some tires form their Fullerton location a few months ago(if that) and just got nailed in the rear..... literally. There was a carpet nail sticking out of my rear tire making a nasty hissing noise. Well, I go into the location on Convoy because it is right around the corner from my work. Tell them I have a nail in my tire, I bought the tread warranty but do not have any of the paperwork. They said no problem. So I go to grab another 020 and they have none the right size. So he says "would you mind getting the 010 instead?" umm lemme think for a sec, um no I would not mind. 010 is fine by me. (already have the 010 on front)
Tire is mounted already and waiting to be picked up.

To top everything off, they could have said that the tread was too far into it's usable life to replace the tire for free(condition of the warranty) but they did not. They didn't even hesitate.

If you are going to buy new tires buy them at Cycle Gear. Sure it is a slight pain to remove the wheels yourself and bring them in, but I am not going to complain. They are replacing my tire for me and saving me a few bucks. I will never buy my tires anywhere else.

:D

While, when you think about it, that rear is $130 at cycle gear... It's $100 from Chaparral... So there's a $30+ markup on each tire... It's nice that they understand that, and might give you a free one knowing how many times you'll be giving them a free $30+ :)

But I'll remember that for the future... They'll see me again :)

You must have forgotten that Cycle Gear matches prices. Chaparral in-store prices are a bit more than their magazine advertised mail-order prices.

Brad,
I paid $189 for the front AND rear together. Total with tax, mounting and balancing with the replacement waranty came to something like $225 or $230

I am very very glad I did not go to Chapparal to get my tires(almost did) Otherwise I'd be paying for that new tire......

Cycle City in El Toro off the 5 FWY has good amount of jackets for a small shop. Good pricing, too. It's in the same parking lot as The Library, a strip club. So if you have service done over there you have a plce to hang out.

I was wondering why there were no stars next to LA Cyclesports?
Is this because it is unrated or that it has earned a zero star rating? I am picking up an 02 SVS there for a quoted OTD price of $6350.00. My 'dealer' up in SB wanted $7195.00

Anyone have any feedback on this shop?

linp
Sun 9/1/02, 11:13AM
No stars instead of "zero stars" means the shop is unrated. $6350 sounds like a pretty decent deal. I'm surprised no other dealer would beat that price... at this time of the year.

How about 4 out of 5 stars for their low initial offering?

Mapuda
Sun 9/1/02, 11:53AM
Sounds fair. I was going to pick the bike up yesterday but work has been killin' me. I am at work today (Sunday). They said call them tomorrow that there might be someone at the shop for me to take delivery on Labor Day. I will post my impressions of the shop after I buy the SVS. :D

Tag Motorsports is in Santa Ana which is a bit far for you in SB but there initial quote for an SVS was $6250 OTD in July.

Dealer cost is $5244 see this file (http://www.socalsvriders.com/downloads/suzuki%20cost.gif) for more details. Dealer invoice from http://www.cyclebuy.com

Dealer Invoice Report
2002 SV650 S
List Price: $6199

Dealer Cost: $5244
Dealer cost includes freight to the dealership.

Assembly Cost: $40 per Suzuki dealer price sheet.
Each dealership has its own method of figuring the actual cost of assembly and preparation for sale.

Ready to Sell Cost: $5284

Dealer Holdback: This Suzuki has 3% (of list price) dealer holdback.
Holdback money is paid to Suzuki dealers in September for units that are sold between September 1 and August 31 of the previous model year. Dealers must pay Suzuki the full "Dealer Cost" price and wait 1 to 12 months after selling the machine to receive their dealer holdback.

Wholesale Incentives: Program dates - May 1 to June 29, 2002 - none for this model

The "Ready to sell cost" is the cost of the machine with NO PROFIT to a dealer. Dealers do not stay in business very long by selling machines for no profit.

Many dealers charge additional fees for "Freight and Setup" over and above the selling price of the machine. Add the "Selling Price" to the "Freight and Setup" charges and subtract the "Ready to sell cost" to determine the PROFIT a dealer is asking to make.

Cycle City:

I rate them a 1. They SUCK. Why? They were the rudest people on the phone to me when I was desperately looking for a jacket that would fit. They don't even 'bother to stock' sizes under 42, as the lady said. I should say that the one who was rude was a woman (a co-owner). She even told me she didn't want my business and hung up on me. Bitch. I would never buy from those fuckers and the chick seemed offended that I questioned why they don't bother stocking smaller jackets.

Irv Seaver BMW:

AWESOME. Very helpful. Decent selection of gear. Awesome for Arai helmets as was mentioned..salespeople are quite friendly and helped me choose the right helmet size, making it easy to buy my Arai Signet GT there.

They did hose me out of a faceshield that I ordered and they lost record of it too. Course, if I could have found my reciept I could have made a case, but they still took my money and I never got my faceshield. Other than that botched order, I was very happy with them. Of course getting there on the 57 with those high winds was quite harrowing for me as a new rider on my Ninja 250.

Tag Motorsports, Santa Ana:

Helpful. I never bought anything there, but they were always very helpful.

Mission Yamaha

Nice people, helpful. Good size store. They were willing to let me test ride a Ninja 250.

More if I remember...

Bought my Vanson Jacket from these guys. They seemed pretty cool, and they knocked about 60 bucks off the retail price when I asked if they could give me a deal. :)

Don't know how that price compairs to other shops, since I couldn't find anyone else that stocked Vanson at the time, but I couldn't find any prices online that were less than retail.

Oh, and they had lots of nice bikes, too. :D

He said he'd give us good prices on stuff. also said he'd beat Cycle Gear's prices on tires. They do have a full service shop too, fo rthose who are not mechanically inclined. :D

cycle center of denton
www.cyclecenterofdenton.com
my father purchased my givi sindscreen from them, and had a good experience. so, i tried to purchase a few other goodies from them. although they were fairly friendly on the phone when i called asking for prices, they were not very helpful. basically telling me that most of everything i wanted were lockhardt-phillips product, and i should check the LP website for prices, and then figure that cycle center of denton would take and additional %15 - %20 off of the msrp. i dunno, that just seemed kinda lazy to me. i mean, the items i was interested in purchasing from them would have cost probably over $400 total...that would have been a fairly large sale if they would have been a little more willing to help. maybe my dad should have called? dunno

light'n boltz thru http://www.tognottisautoworld.com/
the staff seemms curtious enough through e-mail, but i think they charge WAY too much for shipping...almost $10 to ship a $21 item!?!?! come on. it really turns me off when companies try to off-set their "great prices" by hiking up shipping

the owner, mike, has an SV that is really nicely customized, and is very friendly and helpful...so are the shop and parts employees...and the sales guy. very nice bunch of folks

per tine's high recommendation of his new bar end mirrors (thanks tine)...i went looking for them online at newport cycle parts ( http://www.newportcycleparts.com/home.htm ). since they are so local, i decided to call and see if they have them in stock to go get...well, bummer, they don't...but the guy that runs the joint, gene, is super nice and helpful! he even said he'd be interested in working out somesort of deal with us (us=svsocalriders) on getting somesort of discount for our members for somesort of ad or recognition or something (this is where paul or gregg should call them :D or i could try to work something out with him...but i didn't want to step on any toes)

so anyway....here's the details:

i guess gene used to be the parts manager at mach1
he says they don't have a lot on inventory right now, trying to put most of their money into the online shop and all at the moment, but in the future he hopes to have a full shop, including service and such

oh, and he ordered my parts for me, and i should have them tomorrow :)

Sounds like something that is worth looking into.....

Paul what do you think? Put up an ad here on the site? I know we don't want to turn into some cluttered mess but it could be very nice for the peeps on the board from OC to have a place that'll give them a discount.

I was just there this weekend, and I concur. I felt very uncomfortable in there. The lady was not helpful at all, and didnt seem to care. I walked in, and she didnt even say "hello". Anyway, I wont be going there again. This is the one off El Toro, if there are multiple locations.

Cycle Gear gave me great service at the Lake Forest store, but their selection sucked, and they wanted 50% deposit to order boots, that may not even fit.

I'd like to stay ad-free and donation based if possible. A good shop deserves recognition, and they'll be noted in the Shops List. That should be enough for a group discount, don't ya think?

Although I own an F4i, I take my Honda to Marina Suzuki (instead of the local Honda shop) because the staff there is knowledgeable, attentive, nice, fair, et cetera... Just wanted them to maintain that 5 star rating.

I think we should add another star or two to Southland Suzuki. They're right by my place so I go their often out of convenience. Their customer service leaves a lot to be desired and their head mechanic, Ed, is a dick who doesn't know as much as he thinks he does, and their work isn't that great either, but they do have some good points.

Their prices are competitive on everything. Their stuff isn't "holy shit" cheap, but I've found that they're cheaper than a lot of other dealers. What is best about this place is that they have everything in stock. They're never out of anything. That really surprises me because they're so small, but every time I go in there, they have what I want.

Also right next to my place is Cycle Parts West. Their inventory for street bike stuff sucks. They're nice and have a tone of stuff for off-road, but I wouldn't go their for our bikes. Plus their prices are a bit high.

We all tolerate bad service and support for the convienience.

I am not sure why SocalSVriders have given Alba action (poway Suzuki) many stars. They are incompetent in every way. price, service and support. I bought Dunlop 207 front and rear including installation $ 352.00 out of convienience.

Has anyone tried to band together and tried to negotiate a deal with local dealer for better price, service and support for SOCALSVRIDERS.. ?? Discount for SOCALSVRIDERS.. I am sure
these parasites (dealers) have been approached by various organizations. We are a small group than we might have to band together with other Suzuki clubs.

Yo,

I just bought a pair of moto pants from dainese/bimoto in belgium, and those guys rock! Best service I've ever had buying anything, period. I just wanted to let you guys know, that if you're gonna buy any dainese stuff, these are probably the guys you want to do business with. Their prices are well below retail, the stuff got here in 3 days, and it's just what I needed. The manager (Frans) and I exchanged at least 10 e-mails making sure I got what I needed, and he even took pictures of the pants before I ordered them because they're from the 2003 collection and there aren't any pictures of them anywhere! I was even getting responses to e-mails at times when it was the middle of the night in Belgium! Anyways, like I said, best service I've ever had buying anything, so I wanted to let you guys know.

I had a pretty good experience at Pacific Motorsports in Oceanside when my SV needed its 15k valve adjust and carb sync. I made an appointment and they were ready when I got there. I had them throw in a new battery and some new plugs while they had the hood up. Bike runs great and the mechanic even came over while I was paying and told me what spec's my valves were at when he did the adjust. Nice touch. Not to mention the service writer Mikki knows what she's doing and as a bonus is easy on the eyes...

If you can find a shop you like and develop a relationship with them things will get only better. Back in the day when I was a guy-behind-the-counter I know we took the best care of the regulars who came in and were reasonable about stuff and not pushy about discounts and rush jobs.

Wild Hare seems to have some cool stuff. They sell something that raises your tail 36mm (however far that is). I like that idea and the piece of metal used looks pretty simple. Don't think I'd want to spend 70 dollars on something I could get at Home Depot for 2, though.

While I have had two good experiences with parts411.com in the past few years, they have really let me down on my most recent order. They had no problem charging my credit card the full price of my order, including shipping, on the 16th of Dec., yet not only have the parts yet to arrive, they refuse to respond to my inquiries and when I finally got someone on the phone on 12/31, they said my order was going out that day (what a coincidence).
Hopefully my venting will stir the karmic juices and my stuff will arrive soon. Don't know if I'll ever use or recommend them again though.

High Octane Powersports on Thousand Oaks Blvd in Thousand Oaks.

I was in there last weekend to look for some new boots. I'd never heard of it, but it was recommended to my parents by a local motor-cop. So my folks (who have very little knowledge about motorcycles) went over to check it out.

Steve, the owner, was very good about answering any of their questions. He showed them just about every boot he had in the store, and the folks settled on the Alpinestars Supertech (This is a christmas gift from the folks, who don't want to see me hurt... Nice, eh?).

So, I was in there on Saturday to look the boots over and try 'em on for size... I had my folks and two biker friends with me.

Steve was there again and remembered my parents. He was very helpfull (was even helping me pull the boots on)... I think he spent at least a half hour with us.

He was even straightforward about answering my friends questions about how his prices compared with other shops; he said he was pretty much the same as most shops, and that's what I found. He said you could get a better price online, but that shipping might cancel it out.

My friends and I found that we could have gotten a better deal on our boots through AZmotorsports and the 10% discount, but we decided to buy local and support what we think is a good shop with a very cool owner.

From what I could tell, they carry JR and A* boots, I saw a decent line of helmets and some other protective gear. They have some dirt gear, a limited rack of videos, a wall of tires, and a decent parts section.

By comparison, we went out to Chapparal later that day and got no service at all. They had a huge emphasis on dirt, but its possible that its just dirt season. They had A* boots, but not the Supertechs. My friend tried on the S-MX Pro's but decided to come back to High Octane to buy them.

Simi Cycles is where I bought my bike for about a thousand more than peaty got his (a week later at a shop in el cajon... the bastid)...

So, I'm not thrilled with the price, but that's my fault for not shopping around.

So now my bike has been at Simi Cycles for almost a week and they haven't even LOOKED at it... I knew that this place sucked for service, but it would have been very inconvenient to take it somewhere else...

If they haven't looked at it by lunch tomorrow, I'm writing Suzuki... Oh, and my friend Toad promises me that he'll get the service manager there fired; he's done it before (apparently they've been trying to find good service people for the last year or two with no luck).

Added 1/25:

I just got my bike back today, and was happy with one thing... they called it a warantee issue, but I'm positive it was caused by us tinkering around at the last maintenance day. So, that's one decent thing... I'm probably gonna try zuk of van nuys next time.

Today I was out at L.A. Cycles (which is now North-East Cycles because L.A. Cycles is a bicycle shop that threatened to sue or something)...

I don't know how you guys feel about mechanics smoking joints then tearing open your bike and/or riding wheelies up and down the street... but I don't think I'm gonna be trusting anything vital to these guys. 8-}

They almost killed Toad's dad a while back by putting a bolt through his brake caliper, which dug into the pad and locked while he was riding... but they assure him it won't happen again...

hahm motorsports was easy to deal with = jason in sales helped me with the r6. i called him on a monday and told him i wanted the blue at 8600 otd. we spoke several times after and on friday he gave me confirmation. picked up bike on sunday no problems. great guy.

If you get from Helmetpro.com, you are getting something that no one else carries it here in the US market.
Both my girl friend and I got helmets from them in Feb., my friend got a Shoei hotwheels limited helmet from them told me about them.
They gave us discount when we got two at a time.
They were really patient and helpful. My gal got this Shoei open face helmet for her SV, and I finally decided I wanted to get the Shoei X-8RS Kagayama which again fits my blue R6 and no one else has it here. (I've never seen the x-8RS model here)
Well, if you want to be different on the pavement and pay a bit less, like we did.

The helmets they carry just got much much nicer graphic and nicer helmet models.
In fact, looking at Parts411.com, if you live in CA, you're still going to pay tax, Discount helmets, tax and shipping, non of them give you discount if you by two for yourself and your pal, you're paying more.
Prices at Helmetpro are final total before discount.

We really like what we got now!

About Helmetpro.com, I used my card to get our two helmets there without any problem tho. We got our two helmets shipped from Japan within about a week time and they were really helpful when we tried to decide what we were looking for.

As far as I know, if a seller goes through Paypal, at least they are verified and sellers will never see your credit card number, only PayPal does the transaction there, you should be OK(I'm pretty sure there).
By the way, have fun!!

Great site. We just purchased an '02 Suzuki SV650 and it is really the best bike for the money out there in my humble opinion.

We will be taking our '02 SV650 in for it's first service soon. Can anyone tell me why OC Suzuki only has two stars and Saddleback Suzuki has five. Just want to have our bike serviced at the best shop possible.

Karter,

You're living pretty close to me. It's always great to see more OC guys on the board.

BTW, this is my experience with the dealerships you're asking about:

When I was looking for a new bike last fall it came down to the Honda 919 and the naked SV. Went into Saddleback Suzuki and they were out of the SV naked, with none coming for a while. I went to OC Suzuki and they had a black SV. No price posted, so I went and grabbed a salesman. When I asked what they were asking for it he asked me what I wanted to pay. I told him I would like to pay nothing but realized that wasn't going to happen. I tried to get a quote out of him and he wasn't having it. He wanted to do the whole sit down and haggle till I walked out with the bike or in frustration. So, I walked across the street to the Honda dealership and bought the 919. I had a friend buy a Katana 750 from Saddleback a little more than a year ago and he got a decent price and was happy with the experience. Although, when the bike was ready for it's first service they quoted him something like $500.

Karter18
Fri 3/28/03, 6:02PM
Cracked Lid,

We bought our Black SV at OC Suzuki. The salesperson we delt with was the owner as I don't think there are any salespeople. I told him what the quote was that I got from LA cyclesports and his price was $100 more which was ok with me to not have to drive to LA and support a local business. The Lake Forest dealer did not have any '02 SV's in stock and OC had two. We did the deal right on the hang tag of the bike in the showroom. They also gave us a discount on a helmet, two jackets, two sets of gloves, and frame sliders. They had to order the jackets but they arrived in like two days.

Motorcycle dealers are a little differnt than what I am used to dealing with as I worked directly with car dealers in my last position as a manufacturers rep. I was ready for the haggling part as I kind of enjoy that stuff.

That service price at Saddleback does seem a bit high. OC Suzuki told us that the first service would be about $150 I think.

How do you like the 919?

There's a fairly new shop in Orange called Cycle Pit Stop. It's an almost full service place like Cycle City, meaning they'll do any work on your bike except internal engine work. My brother seems to have a good relationship with the owners there and got his jacket, boots and gloves from them (don't know the prices because it was an X-mass present for him).

On Sunday I got to know one of the owners while I was in there (it's a husband and wife team). I was having new M1's put on (Kris'es bike), so took the rims and rubbers in for them to do the swap. Being Sunday mid day it was pretty slow so the owner had me come back with him to the work shop and hung out with him while he did the rubber swap. It's neat to watch and he told me about the machines used (mucho expensive) and we shot the breeze for about an hour back there. I told him about my crash and he said if my insurance co. wants to total my bike that I can take it in to him and he'll work with them to get the repair costs down so that they won't total it. Then when he gets the check to replace the OEM parts, he'd work with me in buying the nifty after market parts to rebuild the bike the way I want it. That sounded pretty cool. I never caught his name, but he was a nice guy and I will take my bike there if my insurance company wants to trash my bike.

I did get charged 30 bucks to get the rubber swapped (a little more than Cycle Gear), but if I was to buy the tires there, they'd do the mounting and balancing for free (which I think every shop should do. Having to pay that extra after you already give the shop 200+ dollars is a rip off) I put their info (and a 5 star rating) in the first post with the other shops' info. So if you live in north OC you should give Cycle Pit Stop a look.

TAG motorsports all the way! The best CS around hands down. I bought my bike from them earlier this year. It was so easy with no haggling (just the way I like it) They gave me a killer deal right from the start without any BS, plus I got free gear! :D They even picked up my plate and registration from the DMV and had it to me within 1 week.

I also like Cycle Parts West in Stanton, mainly for the conveinence, but every so often they do have killer sales to make up for the regularly marked higher priced items. I actually just bought a new HJC helmet from them on sunday. I payed $89 out the door for the CS-12 Format (Blue/Silver/black) Bad ass helmet for a dirt cheap price.

Cycle Pit Stop is selling both BT010 and M-1 for $99 Front/$119 Rear... Not bad prices (lower than Cycle Gear). I'm taking the bike in there Friday morning to get some M-1's tossed on...

For some odd reason my work gets Good Friday off... But for some other odd reason, not New Year's Eve... But I'm not complaining... Just giving Cycle Pit Stop a plug. I'll post afterwards about my experiences...

Hmm... Will GMR be open by Easter? Need to scrub these babies in!!!

Speaking of shops, who can recommend a good reasonable tuner shop (other then the dealer)? I'm looking ahead for when I get a full system and carb kit. I can install an exhaust system like nothing at all, but carbs.... I lack the time and patience in trying to find the correct settings. I'm all for being a do-it-yourself kind of person but in a case of dealing with carbs and the fact that there more tricky to deal with other then FI, it would be best to take my bike in to have them done. Any recommendations?

Don't take it in... Someone on this site can show you how to do it, and with the SV, the settings are pretty well know. A system with air filter mod is 152.5 main/17.5 pilot, without it's 140 main/17.5 pilot...

Looks like you're in Anaheim... I don't have a garage anymore, but I'd be more than willing to help you at some point... I've rejetted my own bike about 3-4 times, and about 6-8 other peoples' bikes, so I'm qualified :D

I got my tires changed at Cycle City in Lake Forest today. Just under $300 for everything, which was the cheapest around. However, the F-head who changed my tires took the magnet off my front rotor that I put there for my cyclecomputer. Didn't notice until I was almost home (I mean who really watches their speed? I only looked because there was a cycle cop ahead with his radar out. Hmm, my computer says I'm going 0mph. GuessI'm safe) So I had to go to Radio Shack to buy a new magnet. Then I notice that he never removed the sticker from the rear tire, so I had little sticker crap all over it from where it had worn through. Thank God I took it easy on the new tires, because that sticker couldn't have had mych grip to it. To top it all of he lost my shop ticket. I will be calling tomorrow to lodge a complaint.

A friend of mine designed a website for a new place to get sprockets. Here is the link in case anyone is looking for sprockets, chains, brake pads, etc. I have not ordered anything yet so I don't know how the prices compare but he is supposed to be less than most. I can inquire about a group buy or a SocalSVrider.com discount if you guys want.

http://www.sprocketcenter.com/home.asp

Hope this isn't against the forum rules but I thought I would just give everyone another avenue to get parts, especially if their prices are competitive.

As many of you in the Los Angeles area may have already considered doing, I went to the "retail store" in Irvine.

On the website, it seems as though the CycleMall "Retail Store" would have some actual merchandise to purchase, as the term "Retail Store" would actually imply goods would be present.

This is not the case.

Instead, there are about 6 Spidi suits on the wall, and that's it. Nothing more. What a dissapointment!

Does anyone actually know of a place in the Los Angeles area that actually STOCKS a decent selection of apparrel? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ya, cyclemall's "store front" does leave a lot to be desired.

Try Bert's Mega Mall if you want to try on stuff. For gear, they stock mostly alpinestars and jr, but they had one or two other brands that I can't remember. They also had a decent selection of boots from what I remember.

I must say, they didn't have a whole bunch there, but Frank worked with me for about a half hour trying different suits that they had to see if they would fit.

We went through all different ones, including a $1500 Teknik that was tested just for size, and then could have ordered one of their more sanely priced suits in the same size.

I know it's not exactly a Bert's or a Cycle Gear, but I think the service was a little better.

ya..I should state for the record, that Frank was totally bomb when it came to customer service. He thought that maybe I was a 50, but at that time, I wasn't seriously looking into buying just yet.

Happened to come across Bert's Mega Mall about 2 weeks later and tried on some alpinestars stuff and the 48 fit really well, so I ordered from Frank, in size 48.

And...the result was GOOD!!

A while back, I mentioned LA Cycles (North-East Cycles). Well, you don't have to worry about accidentally ending up there, because the shop is apparently no more.

My friend Toad had them broker a deal for him, where he picked up this old "street-legal" honda XRL, a 650 dirt bike. Well, two rides later, it had no oil in it, so he took it to them to have them fix the ring issue (and while they're at it, might as well bore it out, and add a lighter piston, a few other things... They say two weeks, he says "don't bs me" they say, ok, three weeks.

So, he calls back regularly... they tell him the engine is apart, they tell him its gone to the machinist, they tell him its back from the machinist... and then it starts getting strange...

They tell him they can't find the engine, must not have come back from the machinist... oh, they found it, it was in the back of their shop... ok, we're ready to send it out to the machinist now (what?!)... And then, last week, he gets the final word...

They've now had his bike for 7 weeks, and my friend is ready to call in the DMV. It hadn't really been an issue, because he hasn't had the money to pay for the bike yet anyway, but now he does...

So, he gets a call from one of the mechanics saying "Hey, we've got this bike out back that belongs to you, nobody's touched it, though... do you want to pick that up?"

And now he hears the story... Owner of the shop has 36k in fines and over 100 bench warrants out for him, so he's in jail right now. Toad said that apparently he rides with some fast kids, I say he must not ride fast enough (not to encourage such behavior, mind you... ride safe, all)...

So, the owner is in jail, the shop is no more, and one of the guys who worked there is trying to work a deal to open a shop in the same building... Toad has a bike that -- seven weeks later -- hasn't been touched and still has such bad issues that its pretty much unridable...

He's looking at an old CB now, and maybe he'll keep the XR to learn bike mechanics on... Or maybe he'll sell it and buy leathers... or maybe he'll sell it and use the money to haul and paint the bottom of his boat... I don't know, he's an Aquarius...

Might want to put California Speedshop on the list too it's in Costa Mesa http://ca-speedshop.com and the people there are really cool and he mostly does bike prep for magazines and movies and such so you get to see cool stuff while a really good mechanic works on your bike. Plus I've been there for 4 hours sometimes and he'll only charge me like 1.5 hours of labor. He does all kinds of bikes too, I've seen all the japanese brands along with Aprillia, Triumph etc. If anyone saw the current issue of CycleWorld he's the one that worked on the ST4s for Wendell Phillips (of Lockhart Phillips) and he also did the turboed Daytona for them.

Ebay.

Now that you need a right faring, my search for a left faring may improve. Seems like if you need it, it isn't available. Since my mini-crash at the beginning of the season, I've only seen right farings in my color (Red).

The Parts/Service manager at Van Nuys Suzuki hooked me up with a used bracket and shifter. And I picked up a used red center faring from Mairina Suzuki.

Good hunting.

Glad you're ok, could have been a whole lot worse.

They have some killer prices on newer used sport bikes. I've talked to them on the phone and they're very polite and helpful. The only thing is there is no financing (which is a good thing) cash or credit cards only. And their prices include everything except tax. Howdy,

I am new to the site, as I am a Nor Cal SV Rider who's not spent much time in Southern Cal yet. I am writing for recommendations for performance-oriented dealers or specialty shops in SoCal for work reasons, being a road rep for Kyle Racing--and taking my goods south. I could use a hand, as I am tied-in well in Northern California, but need to expand down there to pay the bills, and I need to know where to go with high-end parts. I carry RKA luggage, Arata exhausts, CRG levers and mirrors, Power Commanders, and Sato Racing (rearsets, sliders, handmade ti exhausts, adjustable clip-ons, and lots of other goodies) products. Unfortuneately for us SV folk, much of my performance stuff is focused on superbikes and inline fours, but I do have sweet rearsets and clip-ons for SVs--check 'em out at http://www.satorcacing.com. I am also working on bringing in some new lines which should cover us SV guys quite well.

All my stuff is super nice, high-end, reasonably priced, and available (from great distributers), and I run around on my SV with a couple of large boxes full of titanium and billet bits compression strapped to the seat, plus full luggage, stuffed to the gills. I am not a typical sales guy, but I like to ride every day and share my stuff with shops, and I need recommendations on where to go in Southern California.

Please let me know if you can help me out, and let me know if you need some good roads to ride on up North.

Sincere thanks,

Jason Welsh

One place you don't list on your online part is www.kneedraggers.com. I started dealing with them when they were a sponsor of an R6 page I used to go to. They kick ass. I have always been very satisfied with them. I've found that their prices are usually something like 15-20% lower than Bert's (where I try stuff on, so I can order it online for less). I've never had anything but a positive experience with them. I checked, and they do have SV stuff.

Dealt with Honda of N Hollywood, when I laid my SV down. They just started carrying Suzuki, so they didn't have anything. They did mail me my brake pedal, though, so that's good. I left my bike there for 3 weeks, waiting for the insurance co, and the dealer, and me to get everything straightened out. I ended up picking the bike up, without having anything fixed on it. A bad experience, but I don't blame the dealer. Still, though, this list is helpful for me, cause now I know where to go for advice/parts for my bike.

Cyclemall.net doesn't have a big selection for trying on stuff... Better brands than you'll often find at Cycle Gear...

Cyclemall.net might have a decent selection to try, just for sizing, and then they can order whatever you need though... And they're really nice over there... After all the sizes they had in stock didn't fit me, they ordered an absolutely enormous suit for me with no deposit/etc needed, and which if it hadn't fit me probably would have been hard to sell... Luckily for me, it fit :D

There is a little one-man accessory store in Thousand Oaks that has treated me well.

Motor Psycho Sport
3209 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd
Thousand Oaks, CA
805.495.5008

Jeff doesn't do a lot of volume but then again he doesn't have much overhead.

He's more than happy to research or locate those hard to find items.

If you buy a tire from him, carry in the wheel, he'll mount it for FREE.
Prices are at the least reasonable. (remember to order a rear tire for the Night Bandamnit...)

One of my favorite Suzuki dealers is

Suzuki of Van Nuys
16141 Sherman Way
Van Nuys, CA
818.994.2882

I know where the parts counter is in most shops.
Haven't a clue where the Service Department is... wonder why.....

Seems there are more and more dealerships that won't work on older bikes.
Near as I can tell, if the bike is older than the mechanic they take a pass.

I dunno but if you're looking for a place in costa mesa I would recommend
California Speed Shop http://ca-speedshop.com
946 W 17th St
Costa Mesa, CA 92627
949-642-3080

He does all kinds of bikes and the prices are always good. I've used a number of shops and so far this is my favorite I ride there from Encino and SD in the summer to get work done, that's how much I like the place.

i have seen this type of thing on other sites and it seems really helpful.

my first topic of interest is what kinda of magazines and tv shows do you like the most?
and for anyone in the santa barbara area i give the kawasaki of santa barbara on hollister two thumbs down. the thing that pisses me off the most is there closed on sundays and mondays (wtf) and didnt tell me that when i droped my bike off on sat afternoon for a quick fix. but other than that i had a bad experience when i went in there looking for at ninjas last year (before i was a faithfull sv owner) and the owner treated me like some dumb kid just ooing and aahhhhing and acted like i was waisting his time. he didnt take my interst seriously but i guess im glad in the long run :D . .. now i own a better bike

I'm posting this for a friend who has a Honda cruiser (can't remember the model, but it's a large V-Twin shaft drive). In any event, his bike has been loosing oil - no leaks apparent. He had it serviced at a Honda dealer for a major tuneup, but they didn't isolate the problem. I'm thinking it's a bad valve seal or something. Anyhow, every Honda mechanic he finds is very familiar with I-4 engines, but doesn't seem to be comfortable working on a V-twin.

Anyone know of a good mechanic that also works on Hondas in the Downey area that knows V-twins? Thanks in advance for the help.

My pally Paul works there... they are all young guys who sit there and pull "jackass" style pranks and dares on each other. He was given $20 for chugging a 32-oz. bottle of prune juice.:-& They had more potty humor and fart contests for the rest of the day ---AFTER he got out of the bathroom. (they stood outside the bathroom door and laughed at him "we know what you're doing!!" I could tell you more stories, but I think I want to keep dinner down for a few more hours. :hold:

Give em a call--they'll get you hooked into some boots though! I love mine!:D

In San Diego check out Sport Cycles (619-464-6255). Address is in the yellow pages. The guy (can't remember his name) sold me a 2004 Alpinestars P1 jacket (MSRP $499) for $350. Also bought gloves cheaper than I could find them anywhere else. Super nice guy, too. Always took time to shoot the shit and give (good) advice.

If you know what you want, at least check his price before you buy somewhere else.

Pinky, they are closing their doors for retail sales and service. I just got an email from them last week. Last I saw they were still in the same building trying to clear everything out. It is actually right across the street from my work. I can go by there on Monday and see if they are still around/open for business. Primarily dirt stuff in the retail. They might have some tools for ya tho since you are looking to open your own shop.

watch up for that shop...parts guys are good sales is another story...

just for info; if in the San Fernando valley area a small little shop on the corner of vanowen and Tujunga opened up- can order you almost anything( not much stocked) but offers great service and prices to match( F.I. syncro only $40) friendly and pretty knowledgeable it's called motor rebuild weird name but they do everything. They are behind a muffler shop...Tell them you saw this on this site. I am trying to get him to give a discount to all socal members...good luck and have fun.

also don't forget that cle brothers suzuki is no lnger in the valley. North hollywood Honda bought them out.

Hey Leon -- thanks for the word about ECC. Not surprised ... their parts department has some good folks, but I sure got some attitude from the gang in service. Maybe if I had a Goldwing they wouldn't get their nose out of joint by answering a question or two.

What's the scoop on Pacific Motorsports' service dept. in Oceanside? Anybody?

Knightshade
Sat 1/3/04, 6:23PM
Regarding Pacific Motorsports, while I don't think I would ever buy a bike from them, and I've never used their service department to get any work done per se, I've ordered parts from them plenty of times and they've always been very nice and helpful.

I've had work done at National City Motorcycle and while they did fix a secondary complaint while my bike was in there for a somewhat major repair, I wasn't too thrilled with how they fixed it.

The bike was making a noise that sounded like valves or something..kind of annoying. At any rate, they got rid of the noise..by flooding my engine with oil. It was quite ridiculous, and I'll never do business with them again, board member recommendation or not. (Sorry Q.)

Motonation.com pissed me off....

I ordered some replacement SIDI 'Inox' screws from them. The website shows that they are allan hex screws, but the replacement screws were 'Phillips' type. This means that the new replacement screws don't match what's already on the boot (though they do screw in and are the correct size).

After spending 9.95 plus shipping, I sent an email to inform them that the screws were of the wrong type and didn't match the pictures on the website. Also, I mentioned that I wanted a refund. I didn't hear anything from them. I emailed them twice..nothing.

They won't get my business again!

False advertising and no response to email! That should cost them at least one star.

Guys, don't go to Rider Performance Motorcycles in La Habra, I brought in my new tires and wheels for mount and balance, and guess what? They scratched the shit of my my rims!!

Thank god I have some touch up paint that I bought long time ago.....

This is not all, after few exchange of words on RC51 parts, now I'm a firm believer that they are not knowledgeable on parts either....

If you're really bitter about it and paid by credit card you can dispute the charges and then they will be forced to deal with you or the credit card company. Not sure how burned you feel though to argue over $10.

I do not know the process for adding a company to the shop list, but the guy over britishmotorcyclegear.com seems pretty cool. I bought some stuff from him at the LB motorcycle show a while back and it was the wrong size, then I forgot about it and finally just now shipped it back to him. He shipped out a larger size the next day, no fuss, no restocking, no shipping. Answers emails on weekends too. Nice.

I was at a dealership with my girlfriend the other day looking for an SV for her, when I noticed that one of the 650 S models had the forks installed way wrong. One fork tube was flush with the top clamp and the other had about 6 or 8mm showing above the clamp. Are they charging $300-$400 setup fees to have some stoned high school kid assemble these things in back?

If that's a sample of their attention to detail, it makes me really nervous to think about torque specs and other, more critical things. Am I right to be concerned or am I being too picky?

Umm yeah, you can't post an issue like that and not give the dealership info. Customers have to stick together here. I think everyone would appreciate at least the dealership name so they know to be on the lookout for shady characters or deals.

Ok, so going off a 5 star rating on this site, I decided to get a quick oil change at Hammy Boys in Santa Monica. They were nice enough to take me during my lunch hour and the girl on the phone quoted me "around $32" for an oil & filter change.

An hour later I'm staring at a receipt for $66, 'cause the original price apparently didn't include the oil, filter, disposal fee, etc. etc. Is it just me, or should the answer to "how much for an oil & filter change" reflect the final price I'll be charged?

Real disappointing. Lesson learned...change my own oil.
