View Full Version : Need Help with a Tire Change

Its real simple, I ran over a screw, and now I'm screwed, both figuratively and literally -
I need to know who can help me rip the tire off, and put it back on properly and with correct chain tension and all that after i get Cycle Gear to put a new one on.
I live in HB I have all the tools and i have the means to lift the back end, but i dont have the knowledge to do it alone. I actually could get the tire off, but not back on without a bit of guidance.
ANYONE KNOW OF ANY TIRE DEALS???
Thanks- P to tha B.

I've got no more tread on my tires. This would be my first tire change. I know I can read the manual, but if I can I'd like to come and see how it's done.

Okay I am going to go to Palomar Saturday morning, but was planning on not staying too long because I was wanting to work on Kris'es bike on Saturday. Though, he may not let me mess with his bike because I'm not too sure what I'm doing, but either way we should be able to work something out.

...I'm up for this........if somebody there knows how to check the valves.......cause I need to do this........
...I know how to get the wheels off...........but if you want to also get the rubbers off of the rims........then I'm clueless....
...I usually just take the wheels off.........and give them to the shop to put the rubbers on........for free.....
....but then.....nothing is really free.......now is it?.....

It's important to check the valves often, or else they might start leaking and let all the air out of your tires, I check mine often and would be able to help you out Rod.

hey Kurt, are you sure they still are? I just called for a quote on tires and this is what I got:
M1's (stock sizes):
135 rear 112 front
B020's (stock sizes):
129 rear 106 front
or are those prices with the discount already applied? I asked the guy if there were any sales, and he said no. So Im confused now

The one in Fullerton gave Kris his bt020 for 25% off on Sunday, but maybe the sale ended, or maybe the guy just though Kris was cute.

Those prices don't sound very good at all. I have found the front tire for under $80 online before.
Your valves and camshafts are right under the valve covers, which are those big flat covers on top of the engine that the spark plugs go down into

Well - thank you for the input - but I have decided on the Michelin Pilot Sports. I talked at length with a motorcycle mechanic and certified racer dude, and we went thru every tire available - conclusion - the michelin pilot sports are a good tire that shoudl get me 5-6K miles. the tourers will get me about 800-1000 more, but are not near as good.
Also - i can get both tires mounted, balanced and OTD for 200 bux even.
However, Saturday is bad for me - I may just pull the wheels and wait for help to reinstall next week...
I will keep you posted...

ALSO - read this.

Parts 411 has great prices (http://www.parts411.com)
I recently bought stuff from them, and they're the nicest people to deal with too!
"I been told countless times that the Valves rarely need adjusting...plus I have no idea where they are."
Poor old Otto, he must be turning in his grave:-
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/thermo/otto.html#c6
maybe the SV is secretly a 2 stroke and doesn't have valves...where's the pre-mix? lol.
The shims-under-buckets system that Suzuki uses is pretty stable but any poppet valve will slowly sink into its seat and require adjustment (ie re-shimming), I think the manual says inspect at 15k.

The valves are those noisy, clicky things under your "valve covers" (oOOhh...):D
If our SVs were made by Ducati, you couldn't miss them... just past the rattling sound of the dry clutch is a banging racket similar to the sound my '72 Olds Delta 88 used to make - only louder. Sounds kinda like toddlers bangin' rocks on pots and pans, or something.
Nonetheless, I adjusted many a valve on my old aircooled gixxers back in the day, so I'm sure the SVs valve train won't be much of a challenge. I'm well past the 15K mark, so let's make plans to get this done (Setter, Sandra, et al?)!
BTW Punk, check your messages...

PunkBrad,
Who is your tire guy? I'm going to need new rubber soon, and $200 for pilot sports is cheap for just the tires. With mounting thrown in it is a steal.

- Talk to Larry - And tell him who sent you - the guy with the SV - he's (to use a word I dont use - hella) cool.. hehehe
They seem like rad tires, and super sticky, without scalloping or losing shape.
Pb. - they are on sale right now, mount is free 12 bux to bal & a small tire disposal fee, (unless you want to burn your old tires in yoru backyard) total came to 203 out the door! Im gettin mine on tomorrow...

brad: do they have a road hazzard warranty?
Im debating on repatching my tire or getting a new one.
Punkbrad
Thu 3/13/03, 9:41AM
no warranty - cycle gear is the only one who does that -
OKAY - tonight i am taking off the wheels to my bike. anyone who wants to come by, can come by, but i got a handle on that.
tomorrow eveining Sasquatch and I will be putting the wheels back on. if anyone wants to come over that evening, thats fime too - just let me know.

hehe, no Hans - i mean a rack where i can suspend my bike and have both tires off at once. its basically hanging from my back patio cover with eye-lags and ratchet straps. im so ghetto..
dillweed
Thu 3/13/03, 10:50PM
oh so you just rachet the bike up with some tie-down straps?
Punkbrad
Fri 3/14/03, 7:08AM
more or less thats exatly it. the back of the bike, i have to pick up with one hand, and pull the tie down strap up, its not the ratchet kind, the front 2 are the ratchet kind... it works remarkably well - and it was less than the cost of having the shop remove just one tire!!
Desi took some pix of the whole deal on the digi-mon cam - i will post them later on tonight or something..

2 things...
First, most SV's I've heard of were within spec from the factory... You probably will only need to check them.
Second, if they're out of spec, you have to pull the cams, see what shims are already in there, order new shims, and then wait a week for the shims to arrive and put them on the bike. If you have to adjust, you probably won't have luck doing it in one day...
dillweed
Fri 3/14/03, 11:01AM
brad - makes sense. I guess the process of checking them wouldn't take that long, so it's worth doing just to check.
I have a rough feeling engine whenever I accelerate hard through 4-5K........feels like loose motor mounts but I checked them.......so maybe its carbs out of sync, or the valves
Punkbrad
Sun 3/16/03, 3:55PM
well - Sasquatch helped me put the tire on right & align it all up - the tires feel really good - its wierd to have a tire that is round on top - they lean over really easily now-- hehehe..
Thanks to everyone for their help - and i will see you all on the next ride!!
