View Full Version : CMRRA Grange bike tryout, Saturday 4/7
druiid
Fri 3/16/07, 9:47AM
Meet Time: 9:30 AM
Meet Place: Grange Racetrack (Apple Valley)
As advertised here http://www.socalsvriders.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24275 we will be setting up this event to allow riders to get a taste of what it's like to ride and race on mini style motorcycles. At this event we will have several bikes available for you to try! There will be several YSR's an aprilia RS-50 and potentially a couple NSR-50 motorcycles as well.
What will be provided at this event is pretty much everything. The motorcycles will be available free of cost (although if you were to donate for gas to their owners I'm sure they would much appreciate it). Water will be available as well. You will want to bring lunch and snacks, though. Although I might bring some snacks, I won't make a guarantee on this.
What you need to provide is as follows: You will need FULL riding gear. While we hope that no one crashes and then won't need their gear, it can happen. This means you will need a helmet, gloves, boots and a full riding suit either one or two piece. I have one pair of leather pants that I'll bring but I won't make guarantees as to if they'll fit. You'll also need to have $30 to provide to the track. This is paid directly to Grange and is unfortunately something we can't really get around. It's a great track and fully worth the $30, though. Beyond those two basic requirements, that's about it. The bikes will be there as well as several racers to provide help and answer questions you might have.
Now, to get to the racetrack you can probably just mapquest it from the address on http://www.grangeracetrack.com/contact_us.htm
The simple directions are to take the 15 freeway north. The exit will be Bell Mountain. You will go right off of the freeway. Go about a mile and there will be a white sign on the left with an arrow pointing to the track. The road name is Central Rd. If you hit the train-tracks you have gone too far and need to turn around. The road turns into dirt road and will go about a half-mile/mile out. There will be a sign pointing to where to turn to get to the track.
If there are any questions feel free to e-mail at jlondon@syrussystems.com or call at 619-274-2915
We hope to see everyone out there. Please respond to the thread if you're likely going to be showing up so that I can get a headcount. Time to ride!

would a small dirt bike like 100, 150, or 230 be a good bike for this track? I noticed the second rider in the photo with Supaphatty? is on one. What size dirt bikes do most people ride?
druiid
Fri 3/16/07, 10:44AM
There are a couple classes with the 100's and 150 bikes, etc. The largest that can be in any of the classes are the 450 motard bikes.

heh heh, you said "tard"
I'll be there, I have all the gear except leather pants that zip to my Motogp jacket.
Are leather/textile pants OK?
if not I was planing on getting a pair, but I was waiting for more funds to come along.

What about leather man panties, like the Spartans in 300?

A true Spartan would only wear crotchless man-panties.

It's frightening where you took that. Then again, you list Druiid as your favorite ride :(

The small dirt bikes are run in a number of classes, see www.racecmrra.com for more details as to which classes your bike fits in. BUT to run these bikes in CMRRA they must replace nobby tires with a tradtional street tire or for some classes you can run slicks.

No commitment from me, yet, but it'd be great to make it. And if I do attend, I, however, am not promising anyone a ride on my bike as I have a lot of catching up to do...

There's a guy at Apex Moto that has a '93 NSR-50 for sale. It used to be mine.
Their number is 714-533-3041. Ask for Francis. Tell him Jeff sent you.
Here's a pic:
http://www.skillzdays.com/NSRstreets-3.JPG
He says that it has new plastics and a newer tank than it did when I had it. He only wants $1,000.00 for it. (I'd upgrade the suspension if I bought it.) I have some go-fast bits and a slightly better shock for sale if you want to upgrade it.
Luck,
J~

Still planning on going. I plan to ride up as well unless anyone wants to carpool from the San Diego area. If a carpool I could borrow my wife's PT Loser which gets okay mileage (unless someone has a better option).

Hey Sidewalk,
I want to take my bike up there so we can split some gas costs in my truck. I replaced the plugs in it last weekend and drove it up to LA and back and something is wrong with it. I am going to work on it this week and figure it out, hopefully. If I can figure it out then I will drive my truck up there. I live in SD as well.

try contacting these guys maybe they still rent out nsr's

There's no signup for this, right? Just show up and hope to ride?
Bring $30 to pay Grange the rider fee. Don't forget your gear (leathers)!
There should be enough bikes out there to give people a chance to ride on rotations.
And if you show up and ride, you better buy your own damn bike after and come race with us!
:D

Is there a fee for non riders?
My wife is interested in going, but not sure if she is going to try a ride (experienced rider).
$10 pit fee for anyone and everyone who isn't paying a rider fee.

Okay, so, this again is tomorrow!!! We have Al (who runs the CMMRA) showing up tomorrow, Leon will be taking pictures.. and then of course everyone showing up to ride! I will be bringing water and some snacks. There will be a grill as well so if anyone wants to bring stuff to share, I'm sure everyone would appreciate it. Again, if anyone has any questions or concerns... call my cell 619-274-2915. Will is going to be up there first thing in the morning, so if you show up at 8am you won't be alone.

Any bugs?
Ill see what i can do about some high protien bugs.
I think I'll be riding out, so I'll bring the monies to pay for brought food and drink. Should be a perfect day for riding!
they dont sell food there, i would think twice about riding unless you have an enduro or something (about a mile of really harsh unpaved rough road)
ChopperDave
Fri 4/6/07, 4:57PM
I'll be coming out in my buddy's SUV, and hopefully be bringing a cooler with us. If anyone needs me to bring food for them, PM me and I'll see what I can do. Mmmmkay?
BTW, whoever is taking pictures, I demand copies. I already make the SV look like a tricycle... :D

Christ, then why did Justice tell me that riding out there would be the best idea?

You should be fine going out there on a motorcycle, you will just have to go slow for the unpaved bit.

Shit, I was thinking Sunday, oops. Should be there, I will be riding too.
I have ridden some pretty bad roads on my 1000RR, I am not all that worried.
Its dirt for a mile or so but its only bad for the last little bit after the turn at the sign. Youll know the sign when you see it, its the one for grange. Well, I look forward to seeing y'all out there tomorow, I am heading up there tonight, camping out. be leaving here shorty.

That dirt road would be easier on a streetbike than it would be in any streetcage. The reason to take a car would be to get yourself home easier if you get hurt (but it doesn't always work out even if you get hurt).

Lots of fun guys! Thanks so much for putting this on. I hope to see you all again soon.
Thanks again Justice for putting this on! And thanks to all who were willing to allow their bikes to be used. We're all protective of our bikes and it was huge to let complete track newbies take them out and abuse them!
It was definitely the most fun I've had in a looong time.
I've uploaded the pictures to my picasa album. If anybody wants the full versions just PM me.

Stealing my sisters computer for a quick post...
That was the most fun that I think I have ever had, not just limited to riding bikes. I so badly hate Justice now for ruining my life by giving me the opportunity to ride these funner then should be legal bikes and forever changing my destiny!
It won't be tomorrow, but I will have one of these. I fancy that YSR50 that Tom let me ride. Riding on the street will never be the same.
Thanks a lot for setting this up, allowing us to ride your bikes, and making for just a real fun day.
And of course, another public appology to Simon for binning the NSR:(
Thanks everyone for showing up and hopefully everyone had a good time. More hopefully we will see at least a couple of you guys back at some point :). Al was pretty jazzed about the whole event so that was cool. Thanks as well to Will, Thom, Simon and Al for having bikes there for people to try out. Without them this wouldn't have happened.
Id like to thank Justice for letting me ride his 65. I downed it twice:confused: , after the first time i stayed out so he wouldnt have a chance to tell me im too crazy for his precious bike. Glad to meet all who came out and put some faces to names, that i will forget by tommorow (the names not the faces). Look frward to beating some of you in the future, om the track.

Will, you're a crazy person.. now get off of my bike. Oh, wait, it's a little late for that.
This was a fun day. My first time at Grange surprised me with the track's high technical level, comprised of elevation changes and turns with a constantly changing radius.

k0ncept of SCSB posted some video from this day at the track. It's a compilation of varying footages, 36 minutes worth. I've only seen the first minute so far and I pop in around 50 seconds.
