View Full Version : Time to sync carbs?

Ok, I'm almost sold on doing my 600mile service myself.
Only prob is, I feel some slight surging below 4000rpms. Only noticeable when cruising at that rpm, not while accelerating through it.
Could this mean my carbs are out of sync and I should let the dealer do the service?
Thanks,
mike

Welcome to the boards...I think this is the first time you've posted...Not sure of the symptoms of poor carb synching other than some vibrations through the bars and pegs. Have you done any other mods to yer carbs? Jets, shims, etc.? While you describe a steady-state surging problem...the throttle is super super sensitive so you can cause surging even though you don't think you've moved the throttle! Anyway, the best way to smooth out the surge is rejet and shim. The carb synching is not difficult, especially if you're gonna have your carbs out and apart anyway...you can simply install additional vacuum lines at that time...BTW, there is a carb synching party somewhere in Huntington Beach tonight...check out the "Bike Night" thread...
Arrrrrr, avast thar maties!! Umm...do you have a sister?

okay when turning on my bike, after a nice warm up, ill rev my motor and it will shut off. its running really rocky lately and a friend of mine told me its running to rich. i agree but i also have 9000 miles on my bike and i havent revalved or syncronized my carbuerators. sometimes after warm up ill put it into first and it will shut off. also to add to the wierd ness i might have been riding for a while and am stopped at a light and ill rev and when it drops back to idle it dips way under almost about to stall first before it catches. sound familiar to anyone???

You're bike might need to have it's carbs synced (sinked s/p?). You're supposed to do that every 7,ooo miles. I did it for the first time at 21,5oo miles. The bike runs mucho smoother now. It's really nice. That might help a bit for you. You also may need to check your idle.

kinda hard considering my tachs broken... but that would explain a few, maybe my idle is really low...
Sounds like idle - turn the knob until it sounds good, or tune it to another bike. If that's not it, check your plugs.

whats a good way to tell if your running to rich or to lean, my bike smells kind of gasy when its warming up, but doesnt perform correctly... when riding to see my girl up north ill be on the freeway and lately it will feel like my bike dies for a moment and then gets going (when ive been at a constant throttle for a while)
could this be a fuel pump problem?

how do you know whan you have to get a valve adjustment, what are the symptoms?
I think you might want to consider taking your bike to a good mechanic (maybe Lee's Cycle, or other shops with good rating in the "Shops List (http://www.socalsvriders.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=242)"). Have them checkout everything (jetting, sync carbs, valve clearance). With about 10k miles on your bike, it's about time anyways.
Sounds like you have some weird shit going on. If you don't have so much weird shit going on, I'd suggest otherwise (doing the maintenance yourself).

What are the symptoms of having carbs that aren't synched?
My bike is running funny...not smooth. I have plenty of power, but feels like something is out of balance. Like maybe I'm not getting as much power from one of the cylinders? It's very noticeable at slow speeds, not really noticable at high speeds. I thought it might be a tire out of balance or chain/drive problem, but I got up to speed, shifted into neutral and coasted, and everything seemed fine.
Wish I could've made it to the last maintenance day, but I was too tired. Damn sushi night!

When you roll on the throttle, there will be a slight lag if the carbs aren't synced properly... If you're at about 3K RPM and roll on, you might notice 1/2 sec to 1 sec lag before you really feel the acceleration...

Okay, so definitely not a carb sync problem...Thanks.

another symptom of unsynced carbs is the motor wont rev down smoothly, ie if you let off the throttle around 7500 it wont drop straight to idle, it will linger a bit.

I'd try carb synching first, that's more minor than changing plugs and it doesn't cost anything.
