Road conditions update: May 20, 2007

Like a fine dark beer, Decker Canyon Road is an acquired taste. Last season Decker was crumbling apart like a 2 month-old crusty brownie.

CA-23 south of the 101 freeway is called "S Westlake Blvd", and for a bit the road signs even call it Mulholland Hwy, but mostly it's Decker Cyn Road all the way to Pacific Coast Hwy.

The area in lavender has been resurfaced with new asphalt. The area in dark red is NOT YET resurfaced. Caltrans heavy machinery is parked on the side of the road near Charmlee County Park. Decker Cyn is narrow, seriously narrow. The center line is not painted. There is NO shoulder for most of the road length. For now, the new asphalt has made this one of the best roads in the area.

Decker becons for those who like a smooth, tight ride.

Hmmm, I remember the upper part, the part that is now resurfaced, wasn't very abrasive and didn't provide a lot of grip. I hope it's better now. It's a rad road, but like all of Malibu it's narrow, bumpy and sometimes dirty.

I love the view coming down.

This is one of the roads I want to hit this Sunday.

Kanan-Dume was a VERY fun road. That and Latiga.

It is now FULLY resurfaced. There is a bunch of gravel at the apex of the 2 hairpin turns near the bottom. Hopefully that will be gone soon.

Also when the surface heats up the oil in the asphalt may leech out causing the road to be oily so use caution on the curves. Road most of the memorial day weekend fun ride just be careful

No guarantees but I heard from my neighbor a sherriff search and rescue dude that GMR is slated to open next month/
.....stay tuned.

it seems the sherriffs dept, fire dept and forest dept like to fight over who gets to yank up cars and bodies that go off the edge.

He claims road repairs have been the primary reason for closure.

noob question, but where is GMR?

on another note i ride mulholland to westlake regularly (from PCH), and there was much gravel, the whole way.. obviously all fresh work, bit i was overly cautious (translated- rode like a wussy :D )

be great when all the dust settles

Decker is now in decent shape, although there are gravel washes in several spots on the uphill right handers. As noted by others, this Road is VERY narrow. The first tight right when headed uphill will send all but the best prepared riders into the outside lane for a canyon bite. Be very careful. Also, the cambering of the road makes it an easy place to get too low, as many RH corner entries are off-camber. I really enjoy this one uphill, and then Encinal Canyon for the trip down (Lechusa connects the two for a shortcut).
