Ok where to start?
So after 2 months off, I got the bike bake together thanks to Tom. Got to the track at the usual time and just started trying to get a feel for how the bike was going to be. I lengthened the shock back in March to try and keep from destroying my new Leo Vince pipe, but only got to put 6 laps on it before my transmission decided that shifting was no longer an option.
I signed up for the Solo race on Sat for some more seat time and by the looks of the grid it needs all the people it can get. It was a fairly easy victory for me, the only real challenge was making sure to last the entire race. I was doing my usual huffing and puffing by lap 8 or 9 and felt like I was slowing down, this is where a pit board would come in handy. I ended up winning but I was told second place was gaining on me towards the end. It was my first ever win so I was real excited but my lap times were not that great. We need to get more SVs on these grids!
Sunday Monsterdood had me really worried cause during practice he was doing some quick laps and said he felt really comfortable on the bike and I was still feeling those 20 laps from Sat. Monsterdood put in an AWESOME ride in BOTTLW and I wasn’t sure if I would have anything for him in 550SBK or FTLW. He and I were both on some pretty worn tires but neither one of us really had the funds to get new ones so we both agreed to ride on what we had. (Just to make it a little more interesting) We also knew that Jump was the favorite so it would probably be between him and me for second.
We gridded up for FTLW and I actually got a pretty good start! Jump came up on my right and Monsterdood was right in front of us going into 1. Jump’s Kawi definitely has some juice cause when we hit fourth gear he pulled about 2 bike lengths on the entrance to one. As we were just about to T3 we got the red flag. Some one from the first wave went down in T3.
We regridded and this time I got my normal crappy start, wheelied and had to back off a little. Monsterdood and Jump pulled away and I find myself side by side with Chris Armantrout going into T1. I was on the outside so I just figured I’d stick with him through 1 and out motor him in between 1 and 2. Chris started to run a little wide on the exit and I had to back-off to keep from running off the track. (No prob dude, its racing) I got back in line behind him entering T2 as I watched Monsterdood and Jump pull away even more. I got around Armantrout on the back straight and tried for the rest of the race to catch back up to Monsterdood, I could see him just a second or so in front of me and that Jump had pulled away from him. I gained a little on him but he pulled it right back and that’s how we finished.
550SBK went a little better for me. I got a decent start and was able to stay with Jump and Monsterdood for half a lap and then Jump pulled away (As expected) so it was just Monsterdood and me to fight it out for second. I did learn a valuable lesson from him this month. NEVER and I MEAN NEVER turn your back on him on the track. He is one stealthy sneaky bastard and will toy with you till you crack! Not that I did of course. He and I would swap positions several times a lap he would get a better drive out of 9 but I would make it up in 1 and then he would run wide in 2 and I could take the inside line and make the pass. Then ofcourse on the second to the last lap we come up on this RC51 entering T9 and Monsterdood get by on the inside. I wasn’t so lucky, I got pinched at the apex and had to follow it down the straight. I could not stay in the draft and lost touch by the start finish line. I made up the difference in T1 and was ready to make a pass in T2. When we entered T2 Monsterdood started pulling away and about half way through T2 I finally got the courage to go around the outside. I got by at the exit of 2 and tried my dammedest to catch up but it was not to be so. I finished just a few bike lengths behind second and made him earn it (I think) so I’ll take 3rd from a battle like that anyday.
Once again I’d like to thank My Wife, West Coast GP Cycles, Golden Cantina and Bridgestone, they held up very well for all 3 of my races and 3 practices for about a total of about 80 laps!
Now to go home turn some wrenches (just for fun) and try it again next month.
