Someone emailed me and asked for tips on this ride:

I figured, why share tips with one person? I'll share tips with everyone. So, here goes...

Tips:

1. San Gabriel Canyon (Route 39) is very fast and smooth and usually full of cops. Don't speed. Also, there is a ORV area up above the reservoirs, so watch for slow-moving trucks hauling dirtbikes and ATVs.

2. Lower part of East Fork Road has a campground area. Lots of people and kids cross the road through there. Don't hit anybody.

3. Upper part of East Fork Road has had construction truck traffic. Keep away from double-yellow on those blind curves. Construction trucks are known to cross it quite a bit.

4. Glendora Ridge Road has no centerline. Have fun using the whole road but don't be stupid - if you can't see around a blind-turn, stay way the heck over to the right.

5. If you want places to eat, head north on Mt. Baldy Road and there are some nice little restraunts.

The restaurant by the bridge in baldy sucks donkey balls. Sunday morning the only decent restaurant in Baldy is open. Sadly, it's closed saturday mornings.

You also need to note the large number of lance armstrongs up on GMR and GRR. They are notorious for crossing the double yellow on GMR downhill.

Turns are unmarked on GMR and GRR, if you see skid marks, more then likely it's a fairly tight corner, this is very evident heading up GMR.

Everytime I head up, which is quite a bit, I see wildlife... try not to hit it... because that would suck.

Try not to hit the 'lance armstrongs' either. :)

I went to GMR on the weekend of the 4th of July... and it was closed!

Does it close often for fire prevention? :-?

GMR opens and closes often. Because it's county maintained, and 39 is Caltrans maintained, you want to check both if you plan on doing a loop, but even with that the county info lags by up to 3 days sometimes. 39 is nearly always open, at least to the semi-perm gate closure that's been in place for awhile now north of the Rincon trail entrance area (according to a ranger a few weeks ago Crystal Park campground is ready to open but CalTrans has been dragging their feet for all I know it's open further by now):

GMR was open today and in good shape, with some loose dirt near the shoulder in just a few corners.

GRR is being worked on right now with 3 dozers and a water truck near the midpoint. It's pretty messed up throughout so if you don't like scratches on your sport bike you might want to avoid it for a bit. But as always good fun on the SM.

I could only do the hour lunch so I didn't get to 39 today. I live in Upland so I do a lunch loop up there a couple times a week.

GRR is cleaned up but still has the dirt + water from the spray down and clean up after construction.

GMR is very clean except for one easy sweeper with nasty gravel... where Joe Photographer decided to set himself up. That's a recipe for distraction. It was an older Asian guy with a pickup, nice camera rig, and a notebook -- probably trying to make some money. I turned around and went back and asked him nicely to move to a different corner for his sake and that of riders.

It was pleasant tho, the Lances were staying in their lane and traffic was light so I ran the bottom half of GMR a couple times.
