For those that ride on Highland Valley Road (Great road between Ramona & RB), be very careful as you get near the RB side, near the plant farm, there is a great deal of dirt / sand in the corners.
On Saturday (3.22.03) I had just started up from RB going to Ramona going into a left hand turn I felt the bike slide
I did not go down, but I sure scared the $hit out of myself.
But be careful

maybe we should start a thread of possible hazzard spots and police speedtraps, this would be helpful...

A bicycle race/tour is scheduled to take place this Sunday (10/12) in Poway...the route takes the exprienced riders up Poway Grade to 67 and down HVR ( Highland Valley Ranch Rd) you may want to avoid the area if you're out for a Sunday morning ride.

I think thats a good idea.
Aww Jeeze not another one of those bicycle races.. I hate those, just a reason for a bunch of guys to get together, and wear a bunch of spandex and shave their legs, and raise their seat on their bike higher than their handlebars, so there ass is all raised. And to top it off, they ride in the friggin middle of the road, they think their cars.. Theres a ton of them in Ramona on the weekends..

Front side off of the 15 is really dusty, mud (which will soon be dirt) and dirt all over the road..also, watch out for a section of steel plates at the top of a crest about 1-5 miles in.
It looks like they've dug a temporary trench for something and covered it with steel plates and that loose tarmac crap.
I must also say, that riding it back towards the 15 seems like a much more difficult ride and the road is in worse shape than going away from the 15. Is it just me?

hmm...i was just there on sunday...i wasn't bothered by any dirt...
and as far as the plates go, i remember them, but not where they were. but i remember that they were at a straight part of the road.
still, that road is short...might as well ride slow the first time to check it out...

Is it just me?
No... I find the curves a lot hairier going downhill, and of course most of them are downhill heading west.

My buddy just hit some dirt there and dumped his Duc last weekend.
Luckily he was going only around 20mph.
Unluckily he was riding a Duc so he'll be paying out the ass for parts.

Was just out there on Saturday with Steve and Chris. I don't remember any dirt. Must be from after Saturday. The down hill part reminds me of Mesa Grande on the lake side. Yea, I agree, going west on HVR is hairier. I crashed going west back in March.

me thinks everybody thinks I'm lying about the dirt....
but seriously, there was a good deal of dirt and crap towards the front.
i can only guess that due to the fact that they are probably driving in and out of that soon to be christmas tree area, that is what drags all the dirt into the road, then passing cars take a bit of it with them.

I was thinking that maybe all the truck traffic might have tracked in the dirt. I did not mean to imply otherwise:D

actually..I was kidding...I knew none of you guys were serious.
But it does make me feel a little better that it wasn't just me that thought the west ride was funky. I went a little wide in a downhill dr turn on the way back..if a car had been there...I'd probably be in the hospital right now.

I just rode through here today... watch out there is a ton of crap in the road, especially at the west end, due to the recent rains.

Has anyone ridden HVR recently? Two coworkers and I are planning it this weekend. Never done it before. Any advice?
TIA

dont go backwards!!!. start from 15 freeway side. alot of my friends including me had bad experiences going backwards. its just not safe, i think HVR is one of the more dangerouse routes due to so many blind turns, theres a couple of turns at the top where you should only be doing like 10 mph or less i swear it, some of you know what im talking about. HVR was my first canyon run, ive been there at least three times a month for the past 6 months and backwards still gives me a spook. i layed myself out on a lefty.
so RIDE SAFE...it gets fun after a while..

I agree, westbound is not to be trifled with... and any curve posted with a 10mph speed limit... they mean it!

Thanks for the heads-up. We're planning to ride it I-15 to Ramona tomorrow am. I've already stated that I want to cruise the road first...
If it's not to our liking we'll be heading East towards Borrego.
Thanks again,
Dan
