View Full Version : Race sponsorships help

So now that my first track day is under my belt, I've decided to start racing. That being said, it's time to seek sponsorships!
So my understanding of this process is that you send in your resume and if they like what they see, they'll sponsor you....sooo, I wanted the SCSVR community to check out my first draft of my resume and offer any advice.
[BEGIN RESUME]
Born: 5-6-78 (notice the numbers are sequential, that might be good for marketing)
Gender: Male (99% of sponsorships go to males so I think it's good to point that out)
Track Experience: Finished five of six Novice ride sessions entered at the Streets of Willow Ti2TT track day on July 27th. Would have been 6 for 6 but I crashed my second session ever because I didn't know what I was doing. Note: Sessions were half-hour in duration for a total of nearly three hours of track time. I'm consistent rider with most lap times under three minutes @ SoW.
Luck: I won the David Moss' Suspension Tuning DVD at the lunch-time raffle.
Pit bitch: You all know Som.
Fear: I only fear Chuck Norris, when he dies, I'll be without fear.
Sex Appeal: Speaks for itself.
holy hell I hope this is a joke....

God I hope that's a joke, too. What you've wrote is basically a sign that says I'm new and think I'm witty. Lap times "under 3 minutes" at Streets of Willow makes people assume your times are around 2:50 and above. My lap times are half that and there's SV racers who are faster than me on that track. FYI, you know you need to turn a lap time of under 2 minutes on the big track to get a WSMC race license, right?
Sponsorship doesn't really play that big a deal into club racing when you first start. The only sponsors you might get would be a friend's outfit. It's who you know. Once you become an expert and a consistent race winner, then you might get some stuff.
These are the sponsors I've had throughout the years, how I got them and how they helped:
Jadeblue Creative: Shandra's company. She hauled me and the bike to the track for 15 months.
West Coast GP Cycles: Andy's shop.
SoCalSVRiders.org: Duh. They give me a place to post my race reports for other sponsors to see and have given me a little support.
Lockhart Phillips Team Privateer: They take pretty much anyone into their program who has a race license. You get anything out of their catalog at 25% off retail. You have to pay for shipping though, and their shipping charges aren't cheap.
Michelin/Bridgestone: Ran their tires and when I podiumed they gave me money.
Suomy: They'll take on most racers and gave me 50% off my helmets.
Wow, one track day and you're ready to go race'in, huh? :raise:
Maybe go out and watch a WSMC round first.
How about that stock market today?

Actually, I have no idea what my actual lap times were throughout the entire day. But, I was able to reverse engineer my lap times for one session by taking the timestamp of the digital photos that I bought from CaliPhotography. Since the photographer stayed in the same corner throughout the session, by looking at the timestamp which were accurate to the second, I learned that my lap-times were at 1:42 give or take a second. I have to admit, that was with a control rider helping me with my entry speeds, but it was within the first hour of track time in my life.
Yeah, I might seek sponsors just for the rejection letter, but absent any expectation of receiving a sponsorship.

So when are you going to take the racers school and which race organization do you want to race with? WSMC or WERA West?

Well, Som and I plan on hitting up a weekend to watch the WSMC races. Learn more about the organization etc. We're hoping that weekend we could also knock out the new rider school since that's when they hold them, according to their website.
We're shooting for Oct/Nov to have completed that. I think we'd love to try and race in December just to know what an actual race weekend feels like before going for a complete season in 08.
For 2008, barring any injuries, I expect to have over 30 days on the track.
Som and I rob a bank once a week to finance our endeavors.
We're enrolled for the Pridmore school Sept 20/21.

You need media exposure - electronic and print.
Your sponsors are going to want to sponsor you because of the exposure you can bring them.
A racer with more column-inches in print or seconds on TV will always trump somebody with better lap times in the competition for sponsor money.
Get out there, get seen, get noticed.
Otherwise, get in line behind everybody else for your 10% LP discount and tire contingency money.

Good point! I was in last week's Police Blotter, that count?
But on a more serious note, Som and I (mostly Som) are putting together a website to promote ourselves and our lecherous habits. This should provide ample exposure needed for sponsorhsip and even reveal our human side.

Oh boy, we're gettin into semantics. I say "knock it out" b/c anytime we can kill two birds with one drive up to the middle of butt-fuck Egypt (we live in San Diego), then we're stoked because it's major overhead loading the truck and driving to these far off destinations as often as we're hoping to do.
But shit, I was telling Som, let's hit up Thunderhill Sunday and Monday after doing the New Racer School on Saturday. I figured we're halfway there, so why not? I'm down to eat, sleep, and dream about moto-racing. But Som just started at his new company and has to eye his vacation days. I'm not so bothered.

wow..I am all for people going racing..but you already have a sponsor...it's called you wallet...
I have been racing dirt for many years...alot of that on my dime..after finally getting alittel press time, I got some sponsorship.
Now new guys have to be seen and do something impressive. Go race and win...after about your third win they might look at you...
Getting help is easy, getting money is hard..
By all means go for it..you never know if the natural ability is there or not..but getting a money sponsor for your first race is very hard....

uh-huh-you do know that's a faulty statistic, right?
anyways, you very funny guy. i have a little advice for you...since you are trying to kill 2 birds w/one stone & see wsmc races & take nrs on the same weekend, you should goup & do the track day on the friday before & learn the track. the track day is pretty cheap & it will increase your chances of passing nrs.
as the nrs school assistant for the last year & a half, it was alot easier to work with people on friday because there are like 10 sessions, as opposed to the 4 you get while you're in the school. you also have the opportunity to learn the track better.
fyi-there is no nrs in september because of the toyota 200.
also, thunderhill is like my favorite track in the whole world, but it is about a 61/2 to 7 hr drive further north than wsmc. if you do 3 days @ wmsc & then head to t-hill (if you race on sunday @wsmc) that will put you @ t-hill @ about 12-2am sunday night. (novice races @ wsmc are a the end of the day.)
sponsorships-what stingray said about sponsorhouse is right on. you can get discounts, but you have to have some results to get $$. be sure to sign up for contigency w/your tires, and any sponsors that sponsor the race or races you end up running in & if you place top 5, that would be another way to get some $$ or stuff.
oh yeah, one other thing-seat time, seat time, seat time (did i mention seat time?) if you can learn tracks, lines , and the best places to pass people reaally quickly, you wont need a lot of track time. however, if you're still learning how to do that stuff, get as much seat time at different tracks as you can-it will help you build your skill set faster.

Thx girl for all the pointers! For the record, I will absolutely compete no sooner than December. End of story. The target date for passing the NRS is Oct/Nov. The target date for completely converting my SV to a race only bike is January 1st, 2008. The target date to be Moto GP World Champion is late summer 2008.
The Thunderhill I mentioned in September and the "hit up Thunderhill after NRS" are two different weekends. The September just being a track day weekend Sept 15th/16th that Som and I intend on going (we finalize that decision this week).
The other Thunderhill I mentioned was Oct 7th/8th which is a Sunday/Monday, allowing for us to do the NRS on Saturday (no racing, just NRS and learning about WSMC) and then head to Thunderhill that night to be ready for the Sunday school at Thunderhill. But Som kinda thought that was asking too much out of a weekend. We gotta get back to Diego after Monday which means we'd be zombies trying to drive home. We already learned this from our last track day endeavor.
Anyhoo, all wonderful information that I truly appreciate (despite my ass-crack remarks here and there).
Was I serious about sponsorships? No. Am I serious about building a solid resume knowing that maybe one day I will seek sponsorships? Yes. Hence my research in the subject to begin with.
In the end, we're having a blast and will continue to have a blast wrenching our bikes and talking shit to each other. That's all we really want, is a place for Som and I to duke it out. Fuck, I don't have to come in first place, I just have to beat Som! And we all know what that means, I just don't have to come in last.
(disclaimer: actually, Som is a really cool mofo and I only talk trash on him cuz I know he knows I'm only messin with him, you know what I'm sayin yo. peace!)

the nrs school @wsmc on 10/07-10/08 is the round for the streets of willow. again, there is a trackday before hand-that one is sponsored by trackdaz. (10/06) if you're going to drive up, might as well ride.

Right, that was one of the question's Som and I had. We were wondering if there was going to be a complete race series at SoW in 2008, as in 12 races throughout the year? If so, does that mean we want to take the NRS on SoW, or does it matter?
As for 10/6, hell yeah, now that's cajones! Track day 10/6, NRS 10/7 (I assumed this is a one day ordeal), Thunderhill School 10/8 and 10/9. I don't know that we can handle THAT! But shit, I'd give it a whirl.

the streets series is a mini series-there were only 4 races this year, and i dont think it'll will be very many more next year. i know they wouldnt run it for 12 months like the big track.
if you take the nrs @ sow, you can take it at the big track free-you just have to pay for the practice ($70)
if you took nrs @ sow, and then took it @ the big track later, like dec or jan, it would give you info specific to both tracks, and stuff like that can only help. i think nrs @ sow has a slightly lower turn out, so you get more wide open track and more time w/the instructor(s).
(again, more seat time, the better)

Sorry, but as much shit as you are talking here I just had to throw something at you.
But seriosly, welcome to the addiction of riding on a race track. You might want to consider toning your attitude down a bit though. My experience with most racers and fast guys/gals is that they don't like braggarts and especially noob braggarts. Take the NRS at Willow Springs seriously and at the end of the day with the practice starts you will get your first idea what you are getting into. I remember thinking I was pretty fast. Then I had my first real practice session with the expert level riders at WSMC. I am not overly humble about my riding skills and I have some serious goals, but I know my current place and so should you. Until you are turning mid 30's at Streets and Willow you are just traffic. Start getting into the low 30's at Willow on an SV and then you can start flapping your lips.
Take your time and check your ego a bit or a lot of guys in the racing world are gonna think you are just an arrogant jack ass out there. Hard to get tips on lines, etc. from the fast guys when they don't like you. Good luck to you and see you at the track!

Nice, way to step up to the plate Matt.
Blah blah blah, bunch a mumbo jumbo about humility....
Just messin! Cool man, thx for the warm welcoming! As for arrogance/attitude, my humor sometimes parades around as an over-inflated ego, but typically only here on the message boards. It'll be many moons before you'll hear me talk shit near a track, unless it's to Som, he's the only exception. I'll probably stick to self-deprecating humor around the track...mainly because I'm as quick-witted as a three-toed sloth when there's people standing nearby (how's that for a case in point).
Anyhoo, thanks again for the pointers. This thread began as baseless humor but it's now turned into a cultural immersion program for moto-racing, which I totally dig because I really do want to get into moto-racing (at least balls to the wall for one season and re-assess thereafter).

Thanks Towman ! That putz Smokescreen wasn't ever going to come up with any popcorn ... that guy ...
Could we get on with the telenovela here please ?
Let's see ... Burst was defending his maturity, Som was pissed off after being forsaken by Flipper, the ever-challenged Tinkerbell claims she can ride without the testosterone training wheels and is in love with Sugartits, and lastly Flipper changed his name to something to match his tattoo during an epileptic seizure.
Did I miss anything ?
Towman - we're going to need another bag ...

So yeah, I've decided to end my career in racing. It's been a long, wild and crazy journey that I'll never forget.
Looking back, I realize I met some amazing people. There were those that I used, others I just talked shit about, while even others I went so far as to back stab, all for the simple reason of inflating my ego and/or gaining more notoriety, and sometimes, if I was lucky, both.
But I must say, it really has been a wonderful experience. The late nights getting drunk before a race, sleeping with anything that happened to walk, crawl or even slither by. Yeah, I'll never forget those nights, unless I couldn't remember 'em to begin with.
Then there's all the free drugs people would just give me. It's weird how the more you succeed, the more you can actually afford, but the less you have to actually pay for yourself. Kinda backwards if you ask me but I'm not about to right the wrongs of the world. So you know, I can really understand what people like Lindsay Lohan go through on a daily basis. It's tough saying NO to drugs. It really is. I mean, I did D.A.R.E. when I was in elementary school, but they didn't cut out a fat rail of cocaine and put it in front of me and say, "Now try and say no to drugs". Duuude, that's like a whole different game. But I digress.
Anyway, it's time I hang up my hat, move on to bigger and better criminal activities. So in the end, I just want to say thanks you guys. If it wasn't for you, my true fans, I wouldn't be where I am now.

Well put, Royce. You were always an inspiration to us other racers and exciting to watch on the track. Some of the races you had were breathtaking. You were truly the last of the late brakers. You'll be missed in the paddock I'm sure.
p.s.- did you eat paint chips as a child?
