So I'm looking to get into racing and all the race bikes I see for sale are back east. So then I thought maybe I could just buy a salvaged bike. The problem is I don't know where to go to either buy a salvaged bike or buy a race bike that's on the west coast.
If you know please help me out.

Don't know about salvaged bikes, except for at a salvage yard, but as for race bikes there are a lot of SV's raced in NorCal. I would keep an eye on the BARF board - www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums, or post a Wanted post on that board asking for one.

just keep an eye on this website, on craigslist and on the racing forums. (wera, wsmc, afm and ccs)

Have to be patient and wait for the right deal to pop up. There is one salvage title bike for sale in our for sale section right now that is pretty clean.

my $.02 for what it's worth.

Building a race bike from a stock bike, salvaged or not, requires a healthy chunk of change. 9 out of 10 times, you will always be better off buying a race ready bike. When you think about suspension, exhaust, body work, clip-ons, rear sets, it adds up rather quickly. (and that's still a stock motor)

Give Andy Palmer a call at West Coast GP Cycles...he's well informed about race bikes for sale.

Trey is on the money...and Andy would be a good start.

don't "build" your own race bike unless you have access to really cheap parts or you have more money than patience to wait for one to go on sale. best is to check all the message boards frequently and ebay for a used SV racer. I got mine for $4500.

a tip for buying used: make sure you know how much the person you buy the bike from weighs and if the bike was properly set up for their size. there will be some additional cost to respring the bike if there is a large difference between your size and theirs.

Hey thanks a lot guys, I guess patience and talking with people is the name of the game. Is there a certain year or range of years I should look (for rules sake), or does it not matter, whether it has carbs or injectors?

Age of bike doesn't matter. Modifications can. WERA and now AFM have a super stock SV class. SV classes for WSMC are run under superbike rules, so pretty much anything goes.

I, personally, think the first gen SV's make for better race bikes. They're smaller, making them easier to maneuver. With the aftermarket flat-slide carburetors you can get for them, they put out more torque = better power delivery. They also don't have that tendency to break their crank like some people were having a problem with (mostly on the East coast) with 2nd gen bikes. But, overall, they're pretty equal.

Building a race bike can also be tons of fun...albeit like everyone else says, it's time consuming and expensive. So if you've got deep pockets and lots of time on your hands then go ahead and build. That's what I did. Actually, it could still be considered a work in progress since I haven't even touched on any engine mods yet.

And it hasn't touched the track since....well fuck..since who knows when.

Keep in mind that it doesn't take much to get a stock SV onto the race track. For the most part, all you really need buy is bodywork to get you through tech inspection and some fresh tires. You'll have to safety wire too but that is cheap (time consuming, but cheap). If you plan to modify the bike, suspension is definitely the place to start. Like svsrelis said, if you can find a bike that's already upgraded in the suspension department and the previous rider weighs about the same as you, you are good to go.

If you do buy race tires that require tire warmers, also check out www.supermotojunkie.com. I bought my tire warmers from someone on that website. Bought my generator from craigslist. Then moved out here to california and haven't had a chance to use either one of them yet.

If you wanna race, buy a race bike, not a salvage to convert. It will be cheaper, the bike will be faster, and hopefully you will already know what kind of lap times the bike has run to know how it might stack up.

Sorting out the brakes, the front and rear suspension, and the basic engine mods (cams, carbs, exhaust) in addition to the race body work and other weight saving mods will cost $2k-$3k+ and you can probably find a nice race bike for $3500-$5000. When I sell my bike I think it would go for right around $4k or so... but it's not for sale at the moment.

Not sure I would do it myself, but you could be interested in the Kawisaki 250 spec series WSMC is running. I think for $5k, you can get the exact same bike everyone else is racing and have some real good fun out and learna thing or two about corner speed. Advanced Kawi would set you up and even finance it if you want. Race it for a year or until you find the SV you are looking for and then sell it for $3500+ or so. A year on that bike would teach you how to race... or make you frustrated with how slow you are. If you weigh over 180, it may not be for you though I think.

zoran has the best race SV's to be had bar none. most of the bike's he's built have gone on to be on the podium or better

i would get an SV from him if at all possible

or you could always get an SV and drop it off at his place along with a credit card.

That's not true because by definition there can only be three bikes that end up on the podium, and since 70 of the 80 bikes on the starting grid are yellow bikes, that's just impossible. :D

By the way, the bike Will posted about came from AFM land, so it's likely that Zoran has messed with it at some point. How much mojo it has, I don't know.

ok i should have clarified.

all the bikes in the yellow garage that he sells himself have most likely have a trophy under it's belt
