Hey all - I just decided that I'd like to get my novice racing license and run my SV at Willow. I need to know what the rules are for the different classes that my SV might be eligible for. I've got GSX-R forks and shock on the bike. What are the rules regarding suspension changes?

Is there a detailed specifications list I can download?

I also will need to safety wire the bike. Where can I find a list of everything that needs to be wired?

Thanks!!

Go to wsmcracing.com and down load the rule book for all the class rules. It's long and kind of tough to understand so here's what you need to know:

The 3 classes people run SV's in: BOTT Middleweight, 550 Superbike and Formula Twins Light Weight are all run under Superbike rules, meaning pretty much all mods are allowed.

The novice class you have to start in is also run under superbike rules.

That's awesome! So I won't have to change the forks? That's what I really want to avoid, if possible.

Yeah... you don't have to change the forks.

Some people will avoid the GSXR swap if they think they might move on to WERA or AFM with the same bike... but if you've already got it, race it!

As far as safety wiring... let's see if I can do this off the top of my head:

- oil drain plug
- oil fill cap
- oil filter (suggest using K&N filter as it's predrilled for safety wiring)
- radiator fill cap
- upper radiator hose clamp
- lower radiator hose clamp
- front caliper mounting bolts (use safety clips for ease of removal/reassembly)
- rear caliper mounting bolts
- rear axle clip should be safety wire attached to bike and the end of the clip should be zip-tied
- front axle pinch bolts (I've heard recently that they're not checking for front axles being safety wired anymore. Not sure about the pinch bolts, though.)

If it's a Gen 1:
- rear caliper brace bolts (I don't know if everyone does this, but the guy at tech gave me a half-joking hard time about it until I wired it)

Not sure if there's anything specific for the gen 2...

Killer - thanks for all the info! I just bought a safety wire kit - pliers, jigs, etc. Gonna start getting it all together...

If there is water or oil behind it, it should be wired. There is the drain screw on the water pump that needs to be wired and any and all coolant hoses on the bike need the hose clamps wired. There is also an oil galley bolt in addition to the oil drain plug that should be wired.

And I don't know about the quality of the K&N filters, but I know the OEM filters are well made and that's what I run with a larger hoseclamp around it that is wired to the bike.

On the WSMC forum, search for safety wire and you'll get even more info.

Good luck, the SV is a great bike to race on..... You can be competitive without spending a bunch of money and the racers in the class seem to be pretty laid back compared to the competitive 600 riders.....

That's what I'm lookin' for. I just want to go out and have a good time. I got started way too late to take racing very seriously. I just think it will be a load of fun to throw down like that.

Could you maybe post a pic of this?

It is better to just use a diaper pin looking clip. Then you don't need to wire or zip tie the end of the retaining clip.
