Usually there isn't enough time to drive out to the legendary mountain roads.

Really, this should be a web map feature: "Find me the twistiest route between point A and B."

Where do you for a couple of quick twists?

I live a few miles from the Reagan library, which has a really sweet road on the way up to it... Man, its got the nicest corner... Big broad sweeper, slighly banked, and you can see alllll the way through...

Its very short, though... But worth it; I ride it every time I go by.

Check out pashnit, it'll help you find some twisties.

Favorite twisties are also listed in everyone's profile.

I live near SDSU and whenever I am interested in going for a quick ride I cruise down to telegraph via the 94. Its a real fun, quick ride.

Another close one for me in Wildcat canyon. Not quite as fun a Telegraph, but something different. There are some realy fun dips where you can sometimes get air on the upside.

Then there is always Palomar.....but thats a little further.

I live and work really close to the Crest (Hwy CA 2 N/E from La Canada). However, when I don't have time to loop up onto the Crest "on the way" to work, I ride thru the Rose Bowl (South to North on the West side); up Salvia Canyon to Linda Vista; right on Linda Vista and right on Lida; past the Design School; down to Chevy Chase Rd and hang a right; right on Highland which truns into Linda Vista and heads back into the Rose Bowl.

Although, this is all quite a ride from Hawthorne...

Brad,

You should head south on the 405 and check out the 405-133 transition just north of the Irvine spectrum. Very nicely banked 270 degree on ramps. I've ridden them for fun a few times. Scraped a peg too:D .

Nope... 405 S -> 133 N is way, way bumpy...

But I get on the 133 S -> 405 N from Barranca Ave every day after work... That ramp onto the 133 S from Barranca is killer... And since it's a 2-lane 270-degree circle, I just love cruising around passing cars on the outside :)

And then Jamboree S -> 405 S is a fun one as well... A little tighter, but very, very nice... Get that one every day on the way to work :D

Remember that great post on SVRider from some guy in the Mid West who'd go out and hit this clover leaf for like an hour. He was scraping pegs on all 4 270 deg. corners 'till some cop (who'd been unable to catch up with him) nearly cut him off trying to pull him over...

Hitting ramps is for people with nothing better to ride on. Ok, I can forgive you for spicing up your commute, but tell me you're not hitting ramps on the weekends too.

The 110 between the 101 and Pasadena is a totally kick ass road (provided there's no traffic on it - it can be a parking lot in rushour).

It's fast as hell, curvy, has a nice ramp to get to it, is rough enough to keep you on your toes, and goes through several tunnels.

Mullholland drive is good too, but only if you're in the mood to play pass-a-car.

I loved the N-> W curve too much... So I'd hit the 15S and then get off at ... is that Clairemont Mesa? Three months and I've forgotten where everything is. Then I'd get back on the 15N and hit the 52W again. ;)

It seems dangerous too. Notice the dented guardrail and miscellaneous plastic and metal strewn about.

There's also long skid marks starting at mid-corner.

Palos Verdes:
Via Coronel off of Palos Verdes Drive in Palos Verdes--some nice 120 deg turns, and hill climbs plus the best shot of the sunset.

La Canada:
In La Canada (before or after the Crest) there is Chevy Chase Drive going up to Sacred Heart Academy. Okay, lots of blind corners, so maybe not for the faint of heart, but excellent for midnight runs. A kill-headlight switch would be recommended for checking if anybody is coming (how :squid: is that?).

Seems like when in doubt, head for the pricey hilltop properties, and the curves will be there. Not much curbside parking, less traffic, and nearly no ghetto kids running out into the street...

Lastly, I too, find myself going an extra mile to get the curvy off and on ramps. It's worth it.

Then up Montezuma.
Then you can either hit Mesa Grande and Palomar, or go down Old Julian to Wildcat.

Since it's supposed to be favorite local twisty it would be hwy 33 out of Ojai. I live 2 blocks off 33 and can be in the twisties 5 minutes after leaving the house. If I get home from work before the wife I take a short run and can be back before she pulls in the driveway.

I have about 6000 miles under my belt in total and would love to think of myself as a "good" rider. Thing is, although I ride to and from work with no problems and have complete control at all times, I feel retarded when I go out and ride with the intentions of utilizing the abilities of my S.V.
I know I have to get my rear tire fixed as it is really squared off (am thinking of going for a BT020), that coupled with good air pressures should fix up any handling issues, and theoretically calm my nerves.
Can anyone recommend a good road that will give me something to work out on,without making me sh*t my pants at the first corner? All help appreciated.

 Historic Hwy on the columbia river gorge, Oregon. From Portland heading East on I-84, take the Lewis and Clark exit off I-84 east of Troutdale. Head south after the round-about exit ramp (left). Follow the signs for the "Historic Hwy". It starts with long sweeping turns, in the middle are some 180 plus degree 15mph+- turns, and ends with waterfalls and sweeping twisties. It's a tourist spot for the last half so traffic can be a factor.

A nice return variation is to hop back on I-84 and take "the bridge of the gods" (im not sure where the bridge of the gods is on I-84 and where it crosses the columbia river exactly, though ive crossed it recently) across to Washington and return West via Hwy 14 which heads into Vancouver, WA. If you like the circuit it would be easy enough to head south on I-205 from Hwy 14 back to I-84, and start it all over again. There are great viewpoints along the way in both Washington and oregon. Toll on the Bridge of the gods is $.50 for Motorcycles, I think.

Let me know if anyone trys this and enjoys it. Its great practice, be careful.

S9 going from del mar, through part of rancho santa fe to encinitas

Is that a.k.a. Via De La Valle? If you hang a right in RSF (Paseo Delicias I think it's called there) you're on Del Dios highway which is a nice ride over to Escondido. And you can grab a fish taco on the way at Hernandez Hideaway...

Isn't S9 the part if you hang a right(from the east/Del Dios) at the downtown intersection in RSF then pass by the golf course on the right up through RSF, it dumps out onto Encicnitas Blvd just before RSF Blvd. I used to take it to work everyday, its fun and scenic, but only a 3-4 miles long.

I took El Camino Del Norte out that way yesterday(its a right at the pond off of Del Dios just before the 1st stop sign in RSF coming from Escondido, dumps you of onto RSF Blvd north of Encinitas Blvd). Its full of low speed turns and beatutiful RSF scenery, about 5-6 miles long, but bumpy as hell, and quite a few blind driveways. Can be fun, but its not in real good conditon right now.

I think your best bet would be Elizabeth Lake Road(Palmdale Blvd/30th West), in west Palmdale, Elizabeth Lake is faster, light twisties goes west toward Lake Elizabeth.(10-15 miles)

Bouquet Canyon off of Lake Elizabeth to Valencia(20 miles)

The 14 to Angeles Forest/Angeles Crest (40 miles to Glendale)

Munz ranch Rd west of Palmdale Lancaster or Godde Hill in West Palmdale are shorter roads((2-3 miles)

90th west from Rosamond to Tehachapi

Sierra Highway from Palmdale to Agua Dulce maybe

Largo Vista to Wrightwood (200th east or somethin at Hwy 138)

Hey - I am here in Palmdale. We have a pretty regular group of folks that meet and ride in the hills. This started out of the Buell group but we all have other bikes (we're not prejudiced) - a mix of makes from Beemers to Ducati, Aprilia and the usual suspects of Japanese sportbikes.

There are GREAT roads you can hit here and as long as you ride to have fun and NOT ride as if you're racing - you are going to really enjoy the local routes (actually some of the roads are among the best in the country - but I'm prejudiced).

Til the time change, we would often take off after work to run to Newcomb's for a dinner and BS til the sun went down. I ride slow on the streets anyways - especially right now with a broken hand.

Where in Edwards do you live? Base Housing? North Edwards? Rosamond?

From Base, you are about 45 min to the foot hills without speeding. The run to Newcomb's starts right there at the Angeles Forest oframp from the 14... head up Angeles Forest there to Upper Big Tujunga (My personal favorite) - Left on UBT to Angeles Crest... left again toward Newcomb's Ranch. If you want to hit it sometime, let me know.

Down this area, there's the route out to Lake Elizabeth, down any one of the canyons toward the Valley but that'll take you right into the fires right now - Boquet Canyon is a beauty if you haven't run it yet - though it's getting more heavily travelled with cages - avoid it during commute times. There are a couple runs out toward Castaic Lake too.

If you have ALL DAY, you can hit the Caliente/Bodfish route from Tehachapi up to Kernville/Isabella area - there are really great local routes up in the Kernville area. Getting to Tehachapi, you can go to Mojave, turn Left on Oak Creek which runs to Tehachapi (or just do a slab run up 58) - take 58 in Tehachapi to the Caliente offramp. You ought to get a map first so you know what turns to expect. The roads are REALLY twisty and scenery is gorgeous when you crest the pass looking down into Kernville/Isablella area. Heck - we're thinking of putting a ride together sometime. That is an all-day affair. Early wake-up and a comfortable putt to have lunch in Kernville - returning about dark.

Of course, the Crest is Best if you haven't run it. Weekdays are great if you can break away (time change sucks) - the Crest isn't as heavily patrolled and even if you are just putting slowly, you can still find yourself above the speed limits (double fine zone)

Lots to do and see - don't give up on us desert rats!

Big Bear or Arrowhead are a couple other good runs. If you want, there's a great route up to Wrightwood, then across the Crest, back out UBT and Angeles Forest to hook up with the 14 again. Being at EAFB, you are stuck with flat and straight for the first and last 30 miles no matter how you slice it.

Stay in touch. Our little group has a bunch of folks perfectly happy to putt slowly and safely and not scare themselves (or get those $800 tickets on the Crest) Couple will blast off ahead once in a while but we all just meet up for head-counts at every intersection (standard policy for most groups anyways)

If you wanna just try a couple local runs, let me know and I can see if I can find links to usable maps if you are running solo. If you want to hook up, we'll make it happen. The locals are pretty tolerable.

Get out to Willow Springs the 3rd weekend of each month to watch us play! Cheap entertainment and totally open pits. It's only a 15 min ride from the Base.

Mon 10/27/03, 7:23PM
Hey thanks for the invite. I'll have to pick you up on the offer sometime, if I can break free. When do you guys meet? Where? What is in Willow Springs? I'll try to make it out there. And, I'd definately be interested in some of those maps so I can maybe check these routes out solo. It sounds like your group is just what I am looking for. A way to get aquainted with group riding at a safe an enjoyable speed. Let me know and keep me informed. Thanks again.

For the monthly ride, we usually meet in Palmdale, ride up and over to Glendale, pick up some more riders then hit the hills.

Generally for the spur-of-the-moment rides, we'll meet where ever we decide to head out from - but usually somewhere near the Palmdale area.

Willow Springs is the Raceway - straight out Rosamond Blvd about 7.5 miles West of the 14. 3rd weekend of every month is motorcycle race weekend. $20 gets you in all weekend including the pits. You can get in for free if you want to just watch for a while up in the Budweiser Balcony. You just tell the guy at the gate and he'll let you go in and follow the signs.

Check http://www.race-wsmc.com for the latest news on the racing. Check http://www.willowspringsraceway.com for track info

Get in touch - email is on my profile here. I try to do 1-2 rides a week (less in winter, more if bored)

I tend to prefer riding Sundays if not weekday afternoon/evenings.

Any preference of days? Though I lean toward Sunday (better access to girlfriend on Saturdays) - either day is OK.

I'll put out some feelers here to some of the other locals and see. It's an all-day ride.

I'll be getting back to yalls on that one.

Also, my squid filter is turned up HIGH - we try to keep racers in check because of the very remote location and a crash with injury will be HOURS before reaching treatment. This cannot be a race - that is a tight twisty road - occasional grazing cattle and their occasional droppings will give you a startling break in traction. Can't beat it for scenery though. I'll try to have something setup but this coming weekend I am packing for a week's vacation which has me outta town the following weekend and the weekend after that is the next race weekend at Willow Springs... dang it - that means the next time I can make it would be 22nd or 23rd of November - is that too far away?

Waay cool! I'll go even if it means going solo. We'll see what the others say. Already got a bite from a buddy on his RC51. Probably end up with about 4-5 folks.

The only thing about that road is that if you are hurrying, you will be surprised by the occasional decreasing-radius turn and once in a while, there'll be a little bit of dirt. We've never had anybody dump one in our little mob but almost every run somebody says they got sideways when taking a turn a little quick.

It is such a fun road to take slow - it really is worth bringing a camera for the group shot on the crest overlooking Kernville.

It'll be good.

I'll put together a map of some sort.

For those who haven't yet looked at Pashnit.com - check it out for rides in CA. Very good reviews of roads from a rider's perspective - here's theirs on Caliente-Bodfish.

Still too lazy to post a map yet. The initial routing up through Tehachapi is the big variable. Just not a lot of twisty stuff though there are some marvelous back roads where visibility is good (looking for black and whites) - but be advised, Kern County Sheriff's cars are all-white.

You NEED to ride the Crest when this sh!t blows over. Yeah, I know there are cops patrolling on weekends but you can run up and over - stop at Newcomb's mid-morning to lunch time and will see a wild assortment of sportbikes - even a classic or two. You can run 55-ish without worrying about a ticket and at that speed, you'll be able to enjoy the scenery.

Best hurry, there's less and less daylight left.

Yeah - I have too many tickets and still have a broken right hand so I am not going to ride fast on the street (though I'll be racing again in Nov) If you don't mind being held up by a slow rider, come on out! I ran about 200 miles last Sunday down Angeles Forest, over the Crest to Glendale to pick up our groop then back up the Crest to Newcombs (coffee) then Wrightwood (lunch) from and back down the back side to Palmdale, and did OK but the hand let me know it. After that, I put on a lever-throttle so I don't have to twist my wrist so much - much easier for now. Couple more weeks and I'll be good as new and can take that thing off again. (as has been said elsewhere, crashing sux)

Right now today it's fff-f-f-freaking cold and damp (good for the fires, miserable for riding)

Stay in touch. Mid-day runs to Newcomb's on Sat or Sun for coffee and BS is a pilgrimage you have to make. On a slow day, there will be 50 sportbikes in their lot. Don't remember a time I've been there when there wasn't an SV or two in the lot. Maybe we can get a small group of crazies together sometime soon. In the summer, we'd ride at least one evening but now we have this )&*% time change.

I leave on vacation next Wed so the following weekend is out. Tomorrow is a sleep-late day for me but yeah, we ought to put something together. It's a longish ride for you Venturians to get to the base of the hills here - about an hour fifteen minutes.

Why don't you PM me your numbers, then we can try to plan this thingie out. Jake (my BF) has been wanting to go for a while. Saturdays are best, I think (also heard there were less cops and traffic on Saturdays). Perhaps I can get Crash, Tiller, LadyinRed (her husband too) to come too...! That would be cool!!

Well, sounds like a plan.

Set up any sort of plan that makes sense for all of your troops. I am going to be tight on weekend time - working this weekend, next I am in DC on vacation, the following is the next race at Willow so that puts my next Saturday available on the 22nd of November!! Sheesh...

Maybe this could turn out to be a "last Crest ride before the first snows" kind of ride. Send the riding season a last goodbye.

F3LL0w RiD3rz,

Just took my first ride in the canyons and must say, I was not satisfied. I rode Caliente-Bodfish the one posted on Pashnit.com. I was expecting some techinical riding but the ride did not please me at all. It was too slow and the roads were too narrow. I was focusing so much on the narrow roads and the sand I never really shifted higher than 3rd gear. It is an awesome ride for a cage but a bike,...? It was way too narrow. I was expecting something more high speed with sweeping turns, maybe allowing for some close knee drags. After I got to Lake Isabel, I took the 178 East back to the 14 South. This was about a 40 mile ride that was very fast but didn't have the twisties. I enjoyed the 178 better than the mountain roads. Is there a fast, twistie road out here by Edwards AFB, Rosamond? I spent close to 4 hours on the bike, just driving out there and back. OUCH!!! I am only 26 but my body was aching. Don't think I'll be riding out there again, anytime soon. Someone help.

The Crest is a great ride but way too many cops nowdays. A great alternative is Little Tujunga Canyon. It goes from the 210 to the 14 and there is no police activity. In a couple of spots it gets pretty tight and twisty but it also has some high speed sections. I live on this road and ride it almost every day, it's a great ride.

Hey...I just thought I'd direct you to http://www.pashnit.com; this is the best website for SOCAL riding. I personally like MRN. It is a secret race lap out here near Palmdale/Lancaster. It is fast and technical, nice scenery too. http://www.mulhollandraceway.org/roads/245th.html. I also took Caliente-Bodfish, near Bakersfield. Very twistie, slow speed but great views. Hope this helps.

Lots of local motorcycle roads in this forum too,

I hope you all understand just how great you have it. :)

I just returned to DC from a 2-week venture to CA, which included a very nice trip from Oakland to Santa Barbara aboard a ragged-out Magna. Was dying for my trusty SV, but frankly anything with two wheels was fine by me after the first few minutes.

Mines Rd (my personal favorite), Morgan Territory, Mt. Hamilton, over to Santa Cruz, down 1, all the insane dual-sport mountain backroads between Santa Maria and Santa Barbara, then 25 back north... a nice introduction, and enough to make me contemplate moving simply on riding quality alone.

Not that we don't have some real treasures out here (Blue Ridge, Dragon, Skyline Dr, Natchez Trace, etc)... but just not so tightly packed and close to civilization.

I've been enjoying this thread (and board in general)... lots to think about, and even more to take notes on because I'm surely going to be back there soon (maybe for an extended stay, and with my own bike).

True, though it's great once ya buy something. Buy property..it's a great investment (in California). The roads are nice too. The more people that come here, the more the property is worth...maybe we should stop advertising how good the roads are! :|

Angeles Crest (bottom section where it's smooth and beautiful)
GMR (uphill...I lowsided going downhill doncha know)
Ortega Highway

Old Julian is a blast, plus the fact that I am less than a minute away, well, how can I not love it! I'll usually run that up to Julian and catch banner and jump onto S2 to 79 into Santa Ysabel, or reverse that. Hey folks, I'm thinking about a new personal project of a website and I'm looking for some ideas. I'm discussing this with the hypercycles people too, so I'll do some copy and pasting.

My idea is to create a map based website (that could be an extension of either hypercycles or socalsvriders) with very nice features, like favorite rides, pictures, ride search based on parameters (tight, scenic, etc)...

That's the idea, but I was thinking about something exclusive for San Diego area first, and much more interactive.

For example imagine this scenario:
You may start from the top view (all san diego area), then zoom it to the palomar area. You'll have a zoom of that map (probably with the same engine as microsoft streets and trips), but also, the best rides available in that map. If you select any displayed ride, it will highligh it in the map.
Additionally, users will be able to upload pictures and attach them to particular spots of the ride. The guy who's looking at the map will see a photo icon, and if he click he'll see a popup window with one or many photos taken at that place, as well as road hazards, gas stations, testimonials, hints, and other types of landmarks.

It would work as a visual forum, and it would be nice if we could setup moderators for segments of the map. There's so much information in this thread only, but sometimes it is difficult to see or search through all the info.

This is the core idea of the website, we could think of many other nice features to have and refine the concept. And of course, it's still only an idea, no links yet :D

Good idea. Like a more inter-active paschnit.

I can't seem to remember but about a month ago somebody posted a link to a page like "So cal sports car owners" and they had maps like what you are talking about. Maybe if you search the forum you could find the url and get some hints.

I'm new to San Diego (and the SV for that matter), but have really enjoyed riding on 78E towards Banner....the tight turns there are really great (challenge riding ability due to lower speed nature of them). I've still yet managed to go much farther (Montezuma pass, which I hear is a classic [also repaved]).

So everyone has a favorite road or twisty or track...but what about a favorite turn? Ya know, the one you get excited about as your riding...the turn you think about and the turn that makes you wanna jump on your bike and ride? It could be a freeway on-ramp, a curve on the ortega, or even your driveway leading up to your mansion. Share your favorite turn with the rest of us, so we can check it out and share the thrill!

I suppose I should start....so I'll list my three current.

Where: Beaumont Avenue, northbound, Cherry Valley
What: ascending 120 degree right-hander
Why: It is the first turn I could go relatively fast through. It has good banking, is a clean road, and starts up-hill when you come out of it. I can get a decent lean angle.

Where: San Timoteo Canyon Road, between Redlands Blvd & I-10
What: 120 degree right-hander and/or left-hander depending on your direction of travel (is that mathmatically possible? anyway...)
Why: This turn has a stand of trees next to it which makes it semi-blind (coincidentally this fact almost killed me one day) so it gives me a little practice on blind-cornering. I can take it about 75 if I hang off a little bit. Always a bit challenging.

Where: Oak Glen Road, heading west of Oak Glen
What: descending S curve
Why: It has a funky hitch in the middle so I always catch myself having to adjust my line (nailed it yesterday, though). Its also tight enough to make it fun and make you lean/hang-off the bike.

So those are mine....how about yours?

:D

2 nd. Favorite is Mulholland Raceway after the Rock store real tight but awesome as well. After the rock store just give it gas and your on your way to some serious fun.Look up at the view site because there will be people warning you if theres cops up there you could see from the half way point. It gives you enough time to slow down. And check out the big corner by the view site perfect turn to drop your knee.Theres also a guy taking pictures at the turn.you'll see yourself on the web I'm sure for a price.Haven't gone up to the guy,Don't really care to stop.Just remember wherever your favorite ride is keep looking in the mirror for cops, them tricky bastards.

Glendora Ridge, very secluded w/ little if any occupation during the weekend. By far one of the more scenic hwys in the area.

Of course, Turnbull Canyon, which is no more then 5 minutes from my house or work. The only downside is soccer moms crossing the yellow line :(

Some notable mention is Yerba Buena, I would never take my bike on it (due to the high amounts of gravel and the technical aspects of it), but this road can be exilerating behind the wheel of a properly setup car. Palomar used to be my favorite, until I took a drive through Yerba.

OK, the subject line is "LOCAL" twisty, but ppl are posting from Oregon and Edwards AFB, so I'm going Intercontinental...the most awesome best-est motorcycle road I have ever been on is in Hawaii on Maui.

The ROAD TO HANA is legendary, it's 50+ miles of desolate paradise with hundreds of twisty turns that are basically U-TURNS. The average speed you can take this road in a car is 20-25mph. There are sections only 1 lane wide, and signs on the cliff face say HONK HORN around turn because you just cannot see what's ahead. It should take you 3+ hours to do it right.

There are ripoff-tourist priced motorcycle rentals all over Oahu and a few on Maui.

Here is a link to some random Harley fan's page of Hana:
http://www.jakubas.com/hawaii2001/html/road_to_hana.html

Oh, and just to note, helmets are not manditory in Hawaii. I couldn't believe it - I've lived in California too long I thought it was manditory everywhere!

Which island are you going to? In Oahu, you could hardly walk down the street without tripping over a motorcycle rental place. I saw at least 4 or 5.

In Maui, I saw one in Lahaina but sorry I don't have URLs or phone #s. Just try a few searches with google, I'm sure you'll find some. Average prices:

$180 to rent an R6 for 24 hours
$160 to rent a Hog for same,
$30 to rent a moped

Most available in 4/8/12/24 hour increments for less, like $90 for 4 hours

Today, for some reason, I was up at 7:30 and felt like riding. Started up PCH and eventually wound up on the 33 and the 150. I heard about this ride from someone and figured I may as well try it. I was bored for a long time until I hit this one twisty incline outside of Ojai (1st large change in alititude). Holy unbelievable adrenaline rush batman!

Now, I'm an total commuter and about as twisty I have gotten up to this point is the 110 from downtown to pasadena. This was awesome! Now I want to destroy outside of my tires.

And immediately after the best part on the 150, I come up behind 3 HDs (single lane hwy). Oh, and a bee flew into my helmet and managed it's way out before I could safely pull over and remove it. Great run - saw lots of friendly bikers of the sport and cruiser variety - highly recommended.

This route would probably not be appreciated by the low-flying SV-jet fighters who streak over Angeles Crest Hwy at 85mph+, but if you should find yourself on a leisurely cruise thru the JPL-Pasadena-Rose Bowl area and you're not in a hurry...

This is a pleasant ride through tree-lined streets that clears the mind rather than quickening the pulse.

Start around JPL, where Foothill Blvd ends at Oak Grove Park (aka Hahamongna Watershed Park). Head south on Oak Grove, and turn right (or south) at the stop sign which carries you over the 210 FWY.

Turn left (or east) on Linda Vista Ave, which is also called CA-159. The road will meander south with no stop signs or lights for about 7 miles. That's a thrill for my simple mind!

As you approach the 134 FWY, keep right and Linda Vista will take you uphill and west to a signal at San Rafael Ave. Take a left (or south) and cross over the 134 FWY, and another left (or east) onto Colorado Blvd. Then you get to drive your motorcycle over that fancy bridge. Yes, crossing bridges on my motorcycle is a thrill to me, because I am easily amused.

This will dump you out on Orange Grove Blvd, which is not so curvy. So make a quick right (or south) on Orange Grove, and then right (or west) the 5th little residental street, Arbor Street.

After 2 short blocks, turn left (or south) on S Arroyo Blvd. Enjoy the run along Brookside park, a shady residential street that is surprising twisty for a flatland city street.

Stick to the left hand fork in the road, and you will also pass Arroyo Seco Park, and Arroyo Seco Gold Course. The fun ends here where Arroyo Blvd hits Pasadena Ave. To the right (west) is the 110 FWY to take you back to points more familiar.

Again, for the folks who missed my earlier disclaimer: speed freaks ignore this post. People on a mellow ride after a weekend brunch with 30 minutes to spare might enjoy this sidebar. To me its more fun than traveling north/south down Fair Oaks in a hurry to get thru Pasadena.

Salud!

I noticed this thread deviating a little so that was my cue to post:
If any of you folks ever happen to have cause to travel to Australia(specifically Sydney) there is a well known ride along a track known as "the Putty". The Putty Road is a little stretch of some tight twisties and also some slower sweepers, all about 50-80 klms morthwest of Sydney...Great ride, if any of you happen to make it over hereand have the urge to ride somewhere cool without having to travel too far to get there(once you're allready in Sydney, that is.....:-?{couldn't find an "off topic smiley}..cause it is sorta off topic...see what ya miss out on when you ride the right way up...gravity does some pretty trick things, like letting us ride our bikes downunder:D

Hey all,

Try this website. It has great information about all the fun roads here in Los Angeles and all over California.

Havent tried many of the twisties yet...still trying to stay sane in traffic!

Updated favorite local roads:

Bouquet Canyon to San Francisquito: My backyard strafing ground. Good for a quick run almost anytime and it loops back to my place.

Soledad Canyon: Great road! Coming off ACH it's a great way to come home.

Upper Big T: Still one of my favorite higher-speed roads with great visibility through many turns and little traffic. The road to the right off of the end of Big T (away from ACH) is fun too, don't know the name tho).

ACH: Love this road, but best to hit it when there aren't many cops and at a reasonable pace with plenty of room for error.

Quartz Hill: Short but fun piece of road...feels European to me...some very nice turns and switchbacks with great visibility, but way too short. Each trip on this is a there and back affair so I get to ride it twice.

After a few straight weekends of group rides in the Mulholland Area, it occured to me that there "may" be other routes in the greater L.A. area! this is only an idea, as there is no proof of there being other canyons or otherwise fast twisty roads in the L.A. area, but we shall see.

So what I want here is some of you members, who ride our L.A. twisties, to post routes that you think would be fun to participate in. Not that we won't continue to exploit the Mulholland again and again throughout the summer. Much better now that Bristol told us about the Ratty Pelican Resteraunt. But I digress, please! your suggestions!

P.s..., we've already got that mulholland route, so I was think other stuff m'kay?

ACH to Newcombs back down to upper Big-t to AFH to Lone Pine back to Big-t to Foothill to home. Do this route on weekends. During the week during summer I go ACH To Newcombs to Upper Big-t to AFH to Big-t and home.

This ride ROCKS! Boquet Cyn. to Spunky Cyn. Up to San Francisquito, to the bottom, turn around and go back up. Hit Lake Elizabeth then stop at the Rock Inn for some grub. Continue down Lake Elizabeth to Lake Hughes. Up and over and you come out at Castaic Lake. Now... Yo have 2 choices at this point. Go back through Lake Hughes and backtrack to San Francisquito ( I Love this road. It's fresh pavement and new sweeping 100+ type turns... See through all of them.) or hit the 5 fwy and go home.

+1!

I hate Spunky tho...it's dirty and freakin' dangerous. Had one crazy loon in a giant truck using BOTH lanes of those tight twisty chicanes come downhill..he would have killed me if I weren't WAY over on my side....I'm dead serious..(no pun intended).

I'm wondering how many people do that on that road..could have been a flukey one-time thing but I tell ya, it scared the crap out of me...I turned around to catch the guy but he was too fast and I couldn't turn around fast enough..I was furious tho..ready to tear his head off. I've been on Spunky since but I won't soon forget that close call.

Dan... Let's set up a ride out here and get some of the folks from the Valley up here. Guys I promise you will absolutely love this area. There are so many other roads that we can take besides the ones I mentioned. Dan lets figure out an awesome route that takes in all those roads and maybe even that Quartz Hill road you took us on last time. We could even turn it into a half dayer and incorporate a trip up and over to ACH to finish it off.... That would be friggin' cool.

agirls - how about a ride up Grimes Canyon & Balcom Canyon

smokescreen - how about you and Julia lead a Hwy 150/33 ride. I've always wanted to see Ojai.

Nukleon - What about Cerro Noroeste + Lockwood Valley Road

Who can show us Hwy 243 (south of Banning to Idyilwild, then return on Hwy 74 west to Hemet... Well maybe this is my own camping trip ride coz it would be a 3 hour portage for most...)

And when will Caltrans reopen the Crest to Hwy 138 (Phelan/Victorville)?!?

Count me in on any 150/33 ride, hell yes :)

I only tend to play in the Santa Monicas, but my favourite roads aren't quite the same as the route you guys took;

Piuma/Shueren/Stunt/Cold Canyon - "Mulholland Raceway West"

Latigo Canyon, nuff said.

Yerba Buena out at Neptune's is fun, but a bit fiddly and very dirty, has some great sweepers at the top end.

Foodwise, Neptune's isn't bad :) Rock Store is ok and open VERY early and the Breakfast Burrito out at Rustic Canyon Tavern is great (Rustic Canyon also has the misters going during the summer, which are fantastic after a long ride).

I really enjoyed the ACH/AFH/Big T ride I went on up until the point where the bike and I parted company.

There's the 5 lakes ride wich are roads along Lakes Silverwood, Crestline, Arrowhead, Green and Big Bear. That's an all Day and if they open up the Crest it's a near Iron Butt Ride. I've done it in sections but have always wanted to link it together. Better for a small group though.

Whats the max distance on a day ride?

How about a ride that ends up at the Solvang Motorcycle Museum?"

Cerro Noroeste to Hwy 166 to Foxen Canyon in the back way to Solvang. Could always hit Ojai on the way back.

smokescreen
Thu 2/9/06, 7:14AM
We could use a lot of these at once.

Go through Aprils turf up to ojai, thereby getting lots of twisties along the way. Then from ojai, go out the 33 to Lockwood Valley to the 5, to Pine Canyon Rd. to Lake Hughes Rd to the 5 to home!

What do y'all think?

Spunky
San Fran

Pine Canyon
Ridge Route
Hwy 138
Gorman Post Rd
Out through Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mtn. Club etc. to
Cerro Noroeste
Hwy 166

Hwy 150
Back roads along Santa Clara River to Piru

or do it in reverse

BTW the next time you go over Godde Hill Rd. into Quartz Hill,
there are quite a few other roads that can be used to loop back to Elizabeth Lake Rd.

Spunky dosen't see as much traffic now that us locals have San Fran back.

If you decide to do this route this weekend, I can meet you (and anyone else) in Moorpark. I'll show you where Balcom Cyn Rd is and ride with ya to Santa Paula (the 150). Here I will have to go back home as I have a list of stuff that needs to be done before I leave next week. I'll be gone for 3-4 weeks.

If yes, this would be a good meeting spot. This is the address for Mc Donalds. There is a Starbucks in the same shopping center and a gas station across the street.

Moorpark, CA 93021

By the way, there is a Los Angeles Ave and a NEW Los Angeles Ave. (Don't ask, I don't know). You want NEW Los Angeles Ave.

april, that'll be a great ride, but it cant be this weekend for us, as we'll be a couple thousand miles away. but in the coming weeks this'd be a great ride to set up! I'll be all over that. I've got some other riders that we could meet up with at the Ojai Cafe Emporium for breakfast, and then burn it off riding the rest of the route.

As for the other route posted, now that I see you all have these ideas, we need to start setting them up!

Okay, good luck on your trip, wherever you are going. If you look on a map, Balcom is easy to find (right off of New L.A. Ave) you just have to remember to take the 1st right after the left hand curve to stay on Balcom.

Later-

By the way, if anyone rides the 150, Caltrans has finally started working on it to fix all of the damage from the rain. So, even more of the 150 is one lane. It was in the Santa Paula paper yesterday.

That's right around the corner from work!

Yes, take the New LA Ave exit off the freeway (as the 118 merges into the 23) and it'll be on the right.

Hopefully once the 150 gets finished it'll be sweet again!

Doesn't the 33 take snow in the winter, just like Angeles Crest?

No one mentioned GMR. I think it's still closed (the good part anyway), but when it opens, GMR-East Fork-39 is pretty good - or just going up and down GMR is fun too.

Little Tujunga/Sand Canyon is fun - it can be strung together with either Bouquet or Big Tujunga (or both - some people do ACH-AFH-Big T-Little T-Bouquet, etc).

I'm a few hours north from most of you and this is a video I shot of my closest crappy road. This is Harris Grade, a little mountain road connecting Santa Maria with Lompoc. It's short paved like crap, virtually no run-off, mountain on one side, straight drop offs on the other. not a place to make mistakes; most of the corners are blind and a few decreasing radius ones. I love it..lol oh, this was shot with my el-cheapo kodak camera on my '00 GSX-R 600

Huh, I forgot I recorded going back up the mountain from the other direction too. I basically pull over at the bottom, spin around and go back..Look carefully at the road on the left hand side at 1:39 into the video..you can see a sheriff just sitting up there waiting..funny thing was he had to have been there on my first run up and down and since I was going the opposite way, there was no way of seeing him..surprised the crap out of me when I saw him coming back up the mountain..now with that being said and done, he's a great cop. Why? well, I wasn't "officially" breaking the speed limit, just well above the "recommended" limit. I stay in my lane, never pass anyone on a double yellow. He used his judgment to determine that, though I was riding aggressively, I was in control and not a danger to anyone. In 20 years of riding that road, that was only the 3rd cop I've ever seen up there. needless to say, I backed off quite a bit...
