I know that we are shooting at Raleigh Studios in Manhattan beach. I'm sure we have some days on location as well, but don't know where. shooting should begin soon, as we are already working and prepareing the sound stages.

So, can you apply to just be one of the grunts? That would be fun!

I hear its going straight to video, is that true or will it get a release in theaters??

P.S. Thanks for the heads up.

hmm. no idea. It would be a shame to blow 30 million on a dvd. I've worked on films with WAY smaller budgets that got theatrical release. In the end I only care if the paycheck cashes, and the craft service is stocked, hehe :D

What does a Grip, Key Grip, best boy, and some of those other people that you see in the credits do on the set. I have always wondered this as I am one of those people that actually watch the credits and just wanted to know.

dna and whomever:

How many of you are actors? If you have headsheets, maybe we can use you in "testimonials" hawking some of our our exotic products.

Of course before you're cast you'll have to wear spiked collars and do sexual favors at parties...you know...the usual.

good question, I ask myself that sometimes. Well, besides hanging out at craft service and checking out the female xtras, we are sorta the laborers on set. I wrok in the Grip department. the boss is the Key grip. He deals with some of the politics of the filming process and answers directly to the cinematographer. The Best Boy is sort of like a foreman. The key tels him/her what needs to be done. The best boy get's the grips (that's me) together and assigns duties. The best boy also orders equipment, does the hiring, and handles payroll.

some of the primary jobs for grips include, operating cranes, jib arms, or dollies for the camera. Mounting cameras to cars, motorcycles, helicopters, planes, sides of buildings, under bridges, in holes, whereever the cinematographer wants it.(check out my album (http://www.socalsvriders.com/modules.php?set_albumName=albun20&op=modload&name=Photo_Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php), I've got pics from the bike movie torque)

Another role we play, and the hardest to explain, is that we cut and shape light. The electricians(lamp operators) set up the light. We diffuse it(make it a softer light), or cut it(block it from certain areas) decrease it(using single or double scrims)

Hope that helps, there's more to it than I just explained, but thats pretty much what we do. Film is really fun because everyone plays an important role in the process. You cant make a film without the work of the entire crew. It's quite a group thing.

POI,

So, who's the lowest form of life on set? Is it us Extra or the P.A.s?

I always thought it was Extras then I found out P.A. get about the same rate of pay, yet have to grovel and slave for long hours.

What ya think?

dankase, it takes everyone to make a movie, even the extras must play their part. But, sadly, yes the extras are even below the PA's because the PA's can boss them around. It's all about who's got power. Shitty, I know. That's why I like gripping, I enjoy the work and usually nobody f's with us.

I saw some cheesy flick called timeshifters or something the other day that had Casper van Dien (Rico of the first ST flick) and Catherine Bell (Mac from JAG)...

Catherine Bell and Dina Meyer? I officially hate Casper van Dien.

dont hate cause he gets the ladies.

but dont get me wrong, i still dont like him. mainly because rico in the movie was a little pretty boy bitch, and almost nothing like rico in the book, who kicked ass.

Sun 8/17/03, 5:18PM
i would say its a 10 in my opinion

********** book semi-spoiler**********

the MI guy have power armor and that scene where the pilot bitch crashed into the cave to get rescued never happened(well, not with that carmen chick any ways. there is a cave scene). plus the book has a lot commentary about society that the movie never had. i really liked the parts where he has a flash back to his classes with mr dubios (the missing arm guy), who by the way doesnt get cut in half by a bug. i dont want to ruin the book for you, but the movie didnt come close. i did kinda like the movies ending, but only cause it left it open for a sequel and reeked of propaganda.:D

Don't forget that they made one fo the male characters a female in the movie just to make a love story.

Interesting note about the book is the Drop Ships, Mecha and Powered Armor, Heinlien released the book in '59. A little bit before anime.

Also, the movie stole a few minor details from Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, (Like the name for the aliens, and some of the school training details.) Enough that they halted production of the Ender's Game movie, 'cause they didn't want to be seen as copycatting the movie ST1. That and the fact that Haley Joel Osment and Jake Lloyd are both too old to play Ender.

Sigh... maybe someday we'll get an Ender movie; I think it would be very hard to do without Ender coming off as whiny... for which reason I'd rule out both Osment and Lloyd.

Ender's Game would be so awesome as a movie. It practically reads like one already... like a great 12-hour movie. (That's how long it took me to read it.) I think that's partly because of Card's playwriting background... he's really good at the dialogue. I hear he's already worked out or is working out a script for Ender's Game.

Anyway... as for Heinlein, I really tried to read some of his stuff, but it was so fucking sexist I couldn't take it.

For info on the Ender's Game Movie, visit:

And, yes, OSC's background as a playwright is very possibly one of the things that makes him such a readable writer. For all things OSC visit:

in the last heinlein book i read the main character was an antisocial prick who ended up being a pedophile too...

didn't know he wrote Starship Troopers...that movie kicks ass...but probably has more to do with Paul Verhoven's work rather than heinlein's...

No_Brakes23
Mon 11/10/03, 11:27PM
Yeah, he was a lech, but Starship Troopers rocks as a book, and despite Paul Verhoven best attempts to ruin it, (Changing around the characters, stealing from Ender's Game, bad military tactics, etc,) it was still fairly watchable.

Yeah, I just ran into that crapfest on cable last week - watched it all the way through, just to see if I recognized any of the extras, since I seem to keep running into all the same guys at work over and over again (yeah, I'm an extra. Full-time. Pity me. [D'ya need any extras for anything? Call me! Please!]).
