View Full Version : SD Ride Saturday, 8/3
We will be trekking through Highland Valley Road, Santa Ysabel, Mesa Grande, up the fast side of Palomar, chat with bikers at Mothers, down the tight side, repeat, and back to San Diego. These roads are fairly technical, so beginners beware.
Meeting points:
8:00AM Mobile (1 block west) off I-5 La Jolla Village Dr exit.
9:20AM Julian Apple Pie Co. in Santa Ysabel.

Sounds good to me.
Meeting time and place?
I'd be nice to get going b/4 10 or 9:30 to beat the heat, but whenever works for me.

How's this? We'll have 2 meeting places,
8:00AM Mobile (1 block west) off I-5 La Jolla Village Dr exit.
9:20AM Julian Apple Pie Co. in Santa Ysabel (yellow box marked 4).
We should be back on I-15 at around noon.
What time do you guys think you would get to Palomar? I'll meet you at mothers and do a few runs. Can't do the whole ride, too much to get done this weekend.
We should be at Mother's around 10AM.

I'm not sure if this will affect the ride but here are some closures. They say the fire's only 25% contained. I don't know if I can make the ride, but I'll try.
Road Closures (as of 7 p.m. PST)
State Route 78 from SR-79 in Julian to Scissors Crossing
SR-79 from SR-78 in Julian to Sunrise Highway
Sunrise Highway, and Wynola and Farmers roads in Julian, with the exception of those who live in the areas
Thanks for the heads up. I've checked the road closures, and I don't think we'll be heading out that far east to be concerned. Come out and play Stinky!
Here's the plan:
Leave the Mobile gas station on La Jolla Village Dr @ 8AM,
Get on I-15N, exit Pomerado Rd (E), make a left on Highland Valley Rd (the first light),
Turn left on Hwy 67, continue through Ramona, and Hwy 78,
Stop to meet others at the Hwy 78-79 intersection, Julian Apple Pie Co, and go north on Hwy 79,
Turn left on Mesa Grande Rd,
Merge onto Hwy 76, then up the fast side (E Grade Rd) of Palomar,
Down the tight side (S Grade Rd) of Palomar, repeat as necessary
Return to SD on Hwy 76, Valley Center, Lake Wohlford, Bear Valley Pkwy, I-15S, or
Return to North County/Orange by continuing on Hwy 76 to I-15N.

Howdy all! i was wondering how long the total ride (including all stops) usually takes. If i come out and play i need to know what time i'd be back... gotta go look at some places for a business later in the day.
--sdrider
What time do you need to be back by? We'll try to accomodate. We should be back around 12:30PM. Of course, you're always free to head back whenever you want. :)
Damn... after all that riding is anyone gonna be up to doing several runs on the tight side of Palomar? Or, are you guys just gonna head straight through and back to San Diego?
I'll be up there around 10am and will stick around for a few hours. I usually do several runs on the tight side then head home. I do not really care for the fast side. Too many bumps and rocks......

I was thinking the same thing. I always think of Palomar as the destination and the place to practice. I can't make the early meet spot but I'll try to meet up with you guys at Palomar. I have business to take care of tomorrow so I'm not 100% sure.
If we get to Mother's around 10AM, that'll give us a few hours to do runs up and down the tight side before heading back around noon. Right? We'll see how it goes. Some people have other business to attend to, I think, otherwise we'll be up there until the sun sets. We'll try to accomodate everyone... a little riding is better than no riding.
If you have MS Streets and Trips, here's the map file I made. It shows you approximate time at each stop so you could plan accordingly. If you don't have MS Streets and Trips, I'll get you a "trial copy".
Sounds good Paul, I will meet you in Santa Ysabel at 9:30.

Hey, the Palomar ride sounds like fun. I live in OC, so I'll just look for a bunch of SV riders at Mothers around 10:30. Hope to see you there.

I agree, it was a great day of riding. Today was the first time I hit the east side, lots of fun. Palomar rules....
Should have gotten more sleep though, kinda was tired the whole day.
Jeff send me your e-mail. Mine is TomSV650@yahoo.com
The pics look pretty good.

Tom,
My e-mail is in your Yahoo box.

Sorry we didn't get up to Palomar a little earlier to ride more with you guys...... We ended up making a couple more runs and Leigh got a few pretty good pics of some of us riding. It was a good day for riding at Palomar. It really cleared out up there after you guys left. Should have stuck around and done some more riding. :D
Leigh, you gonna put some pics up in the next couple of days?
Good to meet some of the newer peeps from the forum.

what version of MS Streets & Trips are you using? I have 2000 and was unable to use the file. OpPening from WinZip it started Street & Trips, but once started it gave a "unexpected file" error.
I have attached a map I made using MS S & T 2000. Give it a try and see if you can open mine.
download and rename to .est

Ah man, you guys took pics? I always wanted to see how I looked leaned over in a turn. I would've made it except I was pukin all morning. I had few too many last night so I spent the day recovering.
Anybody heading out there tomorrow?

Damn, I had a great time today. I really wore down my chicken strips on my tires. Tired as hell now, though. But I'll be ready to ride next weekend!!!

MS Streets and Trips 2002. Your file opened up fine. Looks like you highlighted a lot of great motorcycle roads.
How about this attached file?
Kurt, lost your gloves?

Will do my best ... a lot of the pictures came out shitty and I didn't take very many ... (haven't been too motivated, the camera makes me unhappy) ...

Anyone notice I got the pix up ... same day??
yeah, so were you just really bored?
I did not see some of those pics when you were here.... Were they on the other memory stick?? Very kewl, thanks for putting those up, and we did not have to wait a week this time. :p
Ya, thanks Leigh for the awesome pics! Still uneasy of our own gallery eh? ;)
Looking forward to our next ride :) Meantime, be safe guys... the street is not a racetrack. There was a big discussion over on another riding club I belong to about group riding protocols -- something we haven't really been stressing, besides the ol' "ride your own ride" reminder.

Hardly ... it is just a bit time consuming to use it, and if I'm going to begin using it, I'm going to set up all pictures I've taken previously before adding new ones ... but I feel motivated, so it might happen.
btw - i really don't like being teased when it takes me a week ... (sensitive leigh) ...
Gregg - no clue, all the pix were on the memory stick ... I had only brought one with me ...

Hey great pictures! I especially like the last one with Gregg, and all the ones with me in them of course:cool: (I look like a real brainiac in that pic of my t-shirt). Makes me want to go ridding just for the pictures.
