View Full Version : Fuel Tank Spacers

I just bought my 02 SVS and I am also a newbie on this board so sorry if this is a stupid question...

I love my bike but I am a little tall and have read that for better airflow some people put like 1/2" spacers on the fuel tank.

Would this also help make it so my knees would sit in the indent of the tank a little better??

If it would where do you get the stuff or what do you use to complete this idea?

If you raise the tank you're gonna run lean without rejetting. Plus I don't know how the bike would run with the stock exhaust and a lifted tank.
But I think all they do to lift the tank is put spacers at the two bolts in the front of the tank.

If you use 1/2 inch spacers you will need 1/2 inch longer screws.... So you need 2 1/2 inch plastic spacers and 2 new screws all available at the hardwear store for les than 4 bucks. Take one of your stock screws in with yah so you can match it to the spacer and the new screw.

Hello.

So, I've got a naked 02...and I'm about 6'3".

I've had a lot of trouble figuring out how to get myself to fit this bike. With the stock pegs/bars, my knees ended up above the tank cutouts.

So I went ahead and ordered a set of Nate's plates, and that has helped, but it has also made the ride a bit more agonizing...and the original problem exists, my knees don't go where they should, so my legs end up splayed out.

What can I do about raising the tank?

1) How far, realistically, can/should I pick it up?

2) Is it just as easy as fitting a few rubber washers in?

3) would I have to re-jet?


Any advice would be appreciated, even if you're just lanky like I am and have some suggestions.

Donn (abkwanabe) has raised his tank slightly by putting some extra washers under the front bolts (I believe thats all he used), he's also stripped out the foam stuck under the tank. He runs his engine stock and I dont believe he's rejetted or worked the carb settings, his engine runs fine. He says it's noisier than it used to be with more air to the box but he likes that anyways.

I installed a set of tank risers and have NOT done any fuelling/engine mods.

The bike seems to be running fine, feels a bit sharper, but a little weaker. But my last 2 tanks of gas, I am hitting the refuel light at 100 Miles rather than 130-140.

Could the risers be the cause of this? And if so, what can I do?

Yes... if the risers are giving you the illusion that your tank is full when it's not. I have a hard time believing they'd affect your fuel economy by that much.

130-140? Bahahah I hit 165 yesterday and figured I probably should get gas... but I still had a gallon in the tank. :p Oh, sorry, don't mind me.

Do they work?

I have a pair from Motosliders and I'm hesitating to use them 'coz the bike doesn't look right with them.

What are your experiences?

I was at a trackday/raceday last year and talked to a very winning local racer. I asked him if the tank spacers make an impact on power. He didn't say anything, went into his trailer and pulled out a binder with dyno run sheets. The difference was kind of suprising, made 2-3 HP on the upper part of the powerband. He was running a stock airbox with a stock filter, supersport rules I think, but I forget the jetting. I do remember his jetting was fairly ordinary, definitely smaller than if you run a desnorkled filter, at least smaller than my mains anyway. I also asked if the spacers were legal for supersport, he said no and told me it's only cheating if you get caught, funny guy!

I have heard a lot about how the SV650 needs more air, and that if you pull the tank up and put some spacers in, then that would get more air to the engine resulting in more power. Has anybody done this? I am looking for ways to get more power without a lot of cost. Any suggestions? Thanks. I ride a 2003 SV650 standard.

I am running the Factory Pro Kit, which includes everything for a re-jet, tank spacers(nice aluminum billet), and a BMC filter with a full opening(desnorkeled). I have yet to run the bike on the dyno since installing but plan to soon. What I have noticed is a marked increase in suction noise, which took a bit getting used too and an increase in upper rpm pull. I have the print out from my stock dyno run so am very interested to see what the difference is. I'll post the two runs as soon as I can get in to see my buddy!

I've got tank spacers on my bike, I think they are almost 1 inch or maybe 3/4". I can't really say if it makes a difference, cuzz I had a K&N put in, hotter plugs and jetting done by Pinkyblake. I gotta say my bike pulls a lot harder with the filter, plugs, spacers and jetting. I don't know how much of a difference the tank spacer alone make though.

03/04 gets air from under.spacers dont help.

Also wanted to note that after the rejet/filter/spacers my avg. range on a tank of gas went from 155 to 125 :eek:

Anyone put tank spacers (tank riser) on their SV? Read somewhere a while back about people placing washers or tubing under the tank where it is bolted down to allow more air into the airbox. Does this sound familiar to anyone? If so did it really do anything for you?

I have 3/8" spacers between tank and frame. Lots of direct air and noisy too but, I like the sound. :D

Hard to say what difference it makes on it's own. I did it when I removed snorkel and added slip-on. Oh Yeah, the decals too!

On 1/2" fuel tank risers:

I had them om at one time, did not notice much difference..it also screwed with the lines of the bike..(tank to frame distance ) and I did not like the look..pull your snorkle that will help...now for the first gen bikes it does make a difference...FI bikes not sure as the air being pulled in is metered...and based upon your mapping. I think..

hm. motosliders suzuki page is down. SVRP ebay site has em for $25 instead of the $5-6 MS charges...

i'm not buying from SVRP, somewhat from price, mostly cause they stole zoran's designs (notice anything familiar??) and went into business to make a buck w/o any hard work.

i already have spacers, just want something slightly more elegant than my janky stack of washers
