View Full Version : God bless the Unemployed Ride, 8/8
dnkase and I were thinking about a Angeles Crest ride on Thursday late morning (or thereabouts)
We could meet at a coffee shop in So. Pas. (near the end of the Pasadena FWY) or at the gas station off the 210 at the bottom of the Crest. (Can't remeber what brand gas, but its a common stop before going up the mountain.)
Any takers?

honestly, i've reached the point that if i could work, you know .. have money (maybe be able to make those payments on my bike that are required), i'd be doing that ...
riding during the week is a benefit of unemployment but it also underlines this feeling of irresponsibility that likes to weigh me down far too often ...
I was thinking of around 10:00 am. I'm totally flexible though. Since this is David's neck of the woods, I'll invite him to give more specifics about times and meeting places, etc.
BTW: My neighbor (CBR 929) can't make it.

hmm, i don't know how long it would take me to get to the meeting place ... any one have any idea? need to know, so i know when i'd need to get up and leave and all that
It'll take you 1 hr 3 mins to get from Huntington Beach to Hwy 2. Which means you'd need to get up at 8AM, leave 9AM. Need a copy of the Map program?
No ... I'd never use it ...

Getting there?
45 min. from HB would be my guess. But with traffic maybe an hour.
You have diamond lanes up the 605 for part of the way.
I would suggest pushing it back the meeting time by an hour since 8-10 am is peak traffic. Or we could split the difference and say 10:30?

Angeles Crest (http://www.socalsvriders.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=403)
Basicly GMR is a subsection of Angeles Crest. Same type of basic geography.
I should caution that like GMR the "Crest" is infamous for those patched of gravel and sand that like to catch you in the apex at full lean.
Atul and I share a similar riding phylosophy: When in doubt, ride slow. So those of you that like a brisker pace should have no problem catching us on the way up.
I propose stopping and resting/waiting for slower riders, at the junctions.
1st the junction where the road to Palmdale splits off.
2nd would be the junction for the road out to Mt/ Wilson.

A friend of mine that I've not ridden with is going to join on Thurs. He pretty much only rides the crest and does track days ... I'm not sure what his street bike is, but his track bike is an R1.
Taking Dave's advice on timing, should we just target 10:30am at the (mysterious unnamed) "coffee shop"?
BTW: My wife demanded I at least try to find a job today, so I went to the outplacement service my former employers were kind enough to spring for. What a bunch of LOSERS!!!!! I was probably 10 years younger than anyone else there! Also, when the "career coach" was asked about his success rate, he sheepishly replied "well, we haven't placed anyone since January". This "Super Loser" then told us he has over 140 clients at the moment!!!!!!
I'm doomed. Lets ride.
Where is the mysterious coffee shop??
I'm gonna meet up w/Paul (friend whose joining) and then ride w/him there, since he knows the way. I'm guessing that meeting @ the gas station would be a better idea ...
Maybe I'll get to take some pix ...

This is the Mystery Coffe Shop. (I think it would be too difficult to meet there, but might be a nice stop after?)
Corner of El Centro and Diamond in South Pasadena.

Check here for map:

I plan to ride to Mt. Wilson, (2nd map), then back down.
Be aware that there are some tight sections going out to Mt. Wilson from Angelest Crest Hwy.
Ride at your own pace, I know I will.

i've had the same reaction to the crest both times i've been there ... "damn, i could go a lot faster than i'm going, but ... i don't see any point in doing so ... where are the corners?"
granted, flying thru that one section at 100mph was kewl, if i can do it one handed, it's not tight enough ...
i had a good time tho', riding the crest after putting the heavier wt oil in my forks allowed me to get to appriciate the change it had on my bike, all over again. :)
and of course, good company makes all the difference. :)
