It's always fun to introduce someone to Banner Grade! See you next Saturday. You'll like the back side of Palomar.

I'm surprised people don't hang out on Banner Grade like they do on Palomar. That's an awesome road too.

I think banner is a sweet road too but i think people avoid it because it's HOT AS HELL down there!!!!

Hey gang,
Rode through there today. The roads are pretty clean. Looks like the dark side of the moon. Going up Sunrise was pretty sad. No shade, everything burnt. Chimnies like gravestones for the houses that were once there. Stopped in Julian as well and the spirits are up there. It would probably help them more right now to visit and eat there to help the local economy than to stay away. Take care all.
We rode through there today too. We tried to stop and eat at Julian, but it was just too packed.

It will bounce back with amazing speed; probably just a few years before it starts to look alive again. Mother Nature knows what she's doing.

Old Julian has some fresh patched up holes...shoddy job done too. They state metal plates are up..but I didn't see any..whether they took them down or are getting ready to put them up...not sure..

Crap. We're planning a short loop after work tonight so I guess I'll get to see it first hand. At least there's no metal plates...yet. :-s
There's also some fun backroads between Lake Cuyamaca and Julian. On the north side of the lake is Engineers Rd. where the Volunteer Fire station is, I grew up 5 miles down this rd. You can get through to Julian this way but there are a ton of roads to get lost on and the conditions can be bad, plus there is no lane divider along the majority of the trip. But if you like tight and twisty, this is your road!

Stay away from Julian, Santa Ysabel and Palomar. The 500+ acre fire is just east of lake henshaw (east of Palomar) and north of santa ysabel. They've closed 79 there and portions of 78.

Portions of 76, 79, 22 and 2 are shut. Apparently even Montezuma is closed down.

Although it's still several miles away from Ramona, in light of last October's firestorm, I think I'd best get my happy arse home and hook up the horse trailer. These things are so very unpredictable.
I'll check with my friends in Julian and Santa Ysabel over the next couple days to find out the damage to the fun riding roads.

I'm considering riding S2. Does anybody have any comments on S2 (fun, condition, etc.) from Hwy 79 to Ocotillo? Thanks.

Yea, my co-worker told me about that fire today, at the time the radio was reporting 1500 acres had burned. Hope they got it under control.

According to Signonsandiego.com
All three were "maliciously set with bottle rockets," illegal fireworks
Over 8400 acres have burned and is considered to be 66% contained, with the expectation to have it surrounded by 6 pm tonight. 4 people have been injured so far. Absolutely horrible..

Here's a pic from the local newspaper, taken at the intersections of S2 and S22. It looks like the road is just fine, though.

The fire's out, but Old Julian is still closed as of 4:30pm, 8/6. LOTS of fire equipment was used to keep the fire to just 100 acres, so I imagine the road's a tad crowded right now. Probably be dirty, too, when it opens again.
Before riding out tomorrow, be sure to check the CHP road conditions page (sorry, don't have the URL handy) to see if it's been opened.
Be careful out there, people.
:D
Thanks Julie, Marc mentioned needing to check the news to check on this.

Be aware of sand in the roadway from Caltrans due to the recent snows.
