The Rock Store is open 12/26 and will be open the 1st and 2nd.
To say the Malibu Alps are beautiful today would be a serious understatement.
The nice lady at the Trancas grocery store came close in declaring it a stellar day.
I'd have to guess my Big Shit Eatin' Grin was her clue as to how much fun I was having.
It rained hard yesterday and the winds did blow.
Don't over ride your sightline as there is some dirt as well as various types of debis on the canyon roads.

Yeah, I was up there today and the roads are pretty dirty and it is a bit windy on the coast. So bundel up if your going out there.:D

So Westlake Bl (Hwy 23) has some dirty corners. watch out for leaves, they can be slippery.
Mulholland and 'The Snake' have dirt and debis in the most unlikely locations. Watch your speed in the blind corners.
Latigo is pretty dirty.
The County has scrapped the road but going up is rather nasty.
Yerba Buena is messier than I expected.
Mulholland up from PCH has a few rocks but is sweeet.
That is all...

I was up there on Malibu Canyon and Kanan Dune Road today on an R6 (first time ever on an R6) and it was pretty cool! Some rocks here and there...generally very good conditions...but I didn't go to the Rock Store...stayed on the sweepers and PCH and then had lunch at the Camarillo airport...what a sweet place to ride to. :D
The R6 rocks! (Sorry, I know that is sacrilege on an SV forum heh).
Well I'm planning to take my wife on her first out of town trip. We'll be riding from bakersfield to venice beach. Would topanga be an ok route for my wife. She'll be on a ex 250 myself on the SV1000s. Any and all comments welcome.

topanga's a good road but has a lot of traffic. there's some other good roads near there but definitely not for beginners. old topanga has alot less traffic but then you'll still have to take part of topanga to hit pch

I second Will's comment. I've never not gotten stuck behind slow-moving cars on Topanga. Las Virgenes Cyn. Rd. is not that much further out of your way, and although you'll probably still find car traffic, they tend to move a lot less slowly.
Obviously there's several other options getting from 101 to PCH, but IMHO, Topanga is the most frustrating (probably the riskiest, too) because of crawling cagers.
Also: I recommend getting to PCH as early in the day as you can manage, because it turns into a real traffic mess in the afternoon, as I learned yesterday

Question for all the SOCAL riders that have ridden Mulholland Hwy. I was there last weekend and noticed right at the "lookout point" there was a photographer. I know Palomar usually has a photographer that posts his pics at Palomarpics.net but I cannot find where the photographer from Mulholland posts his pics if at all. Wondering if you guys know the photographer or of any direction to his postings. Thanks.

:) He's on dotphoto.com or even fishoutofwaterproduction.com there you'll see pics of the turn by the viewsite.Of course theres a nominal fee but the trick is to print out the page and there you go.I've been on it a few times. My buddies saw me on there and told me about it.He's there each weekend and snaps pics .
Try fishoutofwaterproductions.com click on event stills ,6th one down.Gives you a list and click on bikes and by date too.have fun.

Hey! I'll be in LA over the weekend and will be on bike. I would like to go to some of the local "tourist" road like Muholland and maybe Palomar. Does anyone know where I can get some maps?
I tried putting "good sport bike road" in mapquest and for some reason I got nothing!!!

You'll need a map one way or the other so you might as well check out Mad Maps (http://www.madmaps.com) . I know they have a map covering Central/Southern Cal and another for Northern Cal. There's a few more on their website. The maps have recommended loops with markings for mileage, good eats, recommended gas stops, etc.
Many m/c shops carry them and I've seen them at major book retailers (e.g., B&N).

Topanga is still closed

SR 27 - TOPANGA CANYON BLVD
[LOS ANGELES & VENTURA CO.'S]
IS CLOSED FROM THE JCT OF SR 1 TO 11.1 MI NORTH OF THE JCT OF SR 1
(LOS ANGELES CO) - DUE TO A ROCK SLIDE - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE
AN ALTERNATE ROUTE
There was a rock slide on Malibu Canyon between Piuma and the tunnel. The road is expected to be cleared today.
Latigo has signs saying it is closed. The road was undermined and it will be a while before it will be repaired.

Saw this article in the Daily News:
http://www.dailynews.com/Stories/0,1413,200%257E20954%257E2825087,00.html
At the end, it says that there will be an increased police presence in Malibu to make sure there aren't any idiots out there.
To me, the tone was enjoy the ride, but don't do anything crazy.

How do you know if you are racing or speeding? In other words, What's the difference (to the police) between 10 over on a group ride vs. racing?

I saw an officer on monday just chillin, obviously watching for fast movers, on Topanga. I waved. He waved back. It was nice. Glad I couldn't ride the canyons fast--even if I wanted to.

Beware!
Road crew was laying down fresh snakes on the Snake (between the Rock Store and the Overlook) on Mulholland today.
Your traction may vary.
Anyone have an update on enforcement? Itching to get back up here, but I've been afraid because of my pipe :(

whoa, im not from this area. Cops really get ya for aftermarket pipes even though they arent illegal? Hmmmm... i recently got a ticket for passing on the right in malibu. It was complete Horse$hit, i was going to make a right at an upcoming traffic light so i was avoiding traffic and i hopped in the breakdown lane for about 200 FT and he pulled me over. Im pissed. I know this probably isnt the best thread to post this rant, but oh well....

I've been making the commute from Santa Monica to Malibu every day....and lemme tell you...there are cops everywhere.
I've seen 3 or 4 every day either obviously sitting and waiting for a speeder, or already pulling someone over. Usually 2 police bikes working together, and a patrol car or two.

Hey Devilfish,
your reference to the DB Killers I posted about needs an update. I got them and they are just a small hollow pipe which fits into the end of the can. As far as I can tell, they make no difference at all to the naked ear, so I can't recommend them. I also called a company that makes "spark arrestor/silencers" for off road bikes up to 650cc, so I figured that two of them would work on a liter bike, but they said probably not. (Actually, I think they would work fine if they fit the pipe, but they wouldn't do a one off for less than $800 to $1000, which is just stupid). I think someone who is a machinist needs to do this sort of modification. And the reason I don't put the stock silencers back on the bike is that they sound like shit (sort of like a retarded sewing machine with a bunch of bolts rattling around inside).

another photo of DB Killer
BTW, anyone want to buy a pair of almost new (used only 1 minute) DB Killers cheap? This is what happens when you are an early adopter of unproven shite from jolly old.. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Yep I try to warn people about that all the time the cops are everywhere. Luckily I know one of the Malibu judges and I hear the one who usually handles traffic stuff is pretty nice about things.

I just got back from a ride Thursday 9-15 at 3:00pm.Kanan at Mulholland Is F*%$ed up, about a mile south and a mile north on Kanan at Mulholland. There fixing the rode up there.I had to ride it to go toward the beach it sucked. If you ride up there becareful the rode is all grated up and your suspension will feel very different. It feels like you have a flat tire. There was a chippie watching and making sure you don't hit any caltrans workers. When you ride they will stare at you since you are on the screwed up rode and of coarse waiting to see if you go down, so be very careful.

I hate being reminded how I dislike fresh tar snakes on hot days.
I got a reminder again yesterday going downhill on Latigo.
I knew that some of the blacker snakes were slippery, as I could feel my tires moving around a bit, so I wasn't leaning very much.
On one left hander, right at the apex, my front tire hit a series of snakes and started to wash out. The guard rail (and cliff) were heading right toward me. Fortunately I was doing the speed limit so I could stand the bike up a bit and let the front hook up and then turn the bike again to make the corner.
All of this was witnessed by some rider that I was trying to let pass me.:o
I had pretty good front to rear weight distribution (wasn't braking and the throttle wasn't closed, so the front tire wasn't really loaded up).
I guess the point is, for those of you who haven't had the "pleasure" of experiencing fresh snakes on a hot day, be careful (don't load your front tire by braking - engine or disk) and chose your lines wisely, if you can.
BTW, there is still construction of Las Flores and Piuma. Latigo only has one stop sign on it now.
