You don't want to watch it again because it takes too long to stream, or because you look slow in the video?

I just had to take them down.. my server was taking a bit too much of a hit.. I am re-hosting them with a friend with more bandwidth. They will be up in a while.

how many hits did you get?

I managed to download the vids before bandwidth got bad.

Kurt - Looks like you were takin' it easy. Good form and lines though. Watch out for those double yellows. ;)

Burst - There were a few close ones. Couple of the turns you hugged a little too close and one you went wide on but adjusted pretty damn quick while in the apex.

Awesome stuff, guys.

Burst
Wed 7/9/03, 6:13PM
the quick adjustments are what I love about the SV. you can get away with stuff like that......

just the opposite with the GSXR.. i pretty much have to commit to a line and stick to it before entry.. there's *some* room, but not much if i'm pushing the bike..

riding the F2, i felt like i was in full control of it, that i can slam it into a turn, if something goes wrong, there's some room to play around in the middle of the turn.. with the GSXR, not nearly as much forgiveness..

it'd be interesting to ride a SV on the mountain sometime, just to see how different it is.. ;)

Yeah. The steering damper makes things interesting when it comes to changing lines quickly on the Gix, but it's certainly not a handicap and it's much better than my old TLR. Lighter weight oil should cure it. But, I'd rather have headshake insurance.

Gotta love the twins though on the tight side of Pally. They live on that stuff.

Because I look like I'm going 5mph in that vid. But oredith and Burst assured me that it was the video.

My brother has watched it and agrees with oredith that I'm turning in too soon and should be running deeper into the turn, especially with that skinny ass tire I have on there. I'll be working on running deeper this Sunday.

Well, what I saw on video is certainly different than what I saw when we were riding on the mountain together. Well, for the first 2 turns at least....when that guy waved you by but ignored me. lol

I'll probably be up there on Sunday.

I don't think Jeff encoded any of the ones of him going up himself. Need to get another Gix1k to use his camara mount and follow him.. Man.. I rode jeff's bike to work on monday and now my bike feels like a dog.

Yup, I haven't riden with gregg in quite a while, but I think I remember Jeff saying that Gregg was one of the only SV dudes he has seen that he doesn't run up the back of in the turns.

Look for Ivan up there if you want REALLY fast.

Some of the things the SV rear end does in those videos is kinda scary.

Does Ivan ride an SV? No. So it's not as impressive as seeing how fast Burst can climb that mountain.

He's the only one in my eyes.

Actually, I gotta break it to the SV riders.

YOU guys are in your element at Palomar. YOU guys have the advantage. I'd actually like to see more SV's kicking racer-replica ass at that mountain, especially the tight side.

Bigger bikes (twins or inline-4's) will have a hard time catching up to an SV rider with equal skill. As a matter of fact, the fastest canyon carver I've ever rode with rides two up, he and his wife on an SVS with aftermarket suspension are a sight to behold. They are also old enough to be my parents.

With the bigger bikes, it's a delicate balance between going fast and sliding. Unfortunately, I tried to squueze out more speed from my 1k than my road skills would allow, and so I paid for it. With the SV, there's more leniency for throttle mistakes in the canyons. So, I'm going to the track next month to see what all this hype is about. ;)

Oh, since Burst is DA MAN at Pally, I'd like to tail him on Sunday to see how slow I am. :p

I don't believe that. I think you just needed to be a better rider to handle that 1000 you had (sorry, that's just my opinion). Those guys in the Palomar "mafia" push the hell out of their liter bikes. I really don't think they could climb (or even ascend) that mountain as fast if they were on a bike that struggles to reach 100 mph (there are a few spots where those guys will hit a 100mph, but just for a second).

66hp and economy suspension, even with good torque, aren't as good as a race ready superbike, no matter how tight the road.

Well they're both faster than me!

I need to start going more than once every few months. My leathers are in for alteration though so it'll once again just be jeff up there this weekend.

And that's very well true, I ain't gonna argue that. I've only been riding a couple of years and I've never been to the track. I can tell you that I was not a squid on the 1k though. linp, Jgy, and SdGix have ridden with me and they thought I rode that bad boy just fine...until I decided to test the sliding ability of my leathers. Oh, and no, I wasn't trying to play catch-up before it happened. I was up front riding my usual pace.

66hp and economy suspension, even with good torque, aren't as good as a race ready superbike, no matter how tight the road.

To me, it's all about usable powerband. When I had the SV, I'd bring it up to Palomar and was surprised at how long I can keep the throttle pinned and not worry about sliding the back end around. On the tight side, this allowed me to concentrate on my lines instead of worrying about the bike trying to buck me off.

But, I haven't been riding long enough and I've never raced on a track. So, these are just my opinions...don't take 'em seriously enough to warrant the shedding of blood or anything like that because they're probably moot anyway. :p

Oh, and Burst, please show me the ropes. :D

it's not about how long you've been riding, but how many miles you've logged in, and what those miles consisted of..

i've been riding for 16 months now, and logged in just over 20k miles.. NONE of the miles on the bikes have been more than 100 miles away. my daily commute is 11 miles round trip. i'd say that a conservative 50% of those miles were from riding in the canyons, or getting TO the canyons..

it's comfort level, and i'll be the first to say, that Gregg is probably the fastest SV rider i've seen, though i'm not sure what that's worth, because i've never seen one at the track riden by someone that goes to the track every other weekend. i can follow Gregg all day, and have fun, relax, and not feel like i'm being held up.

almost *ALL* the other SV riders that i've seen at the mountains though, are timid.. and this has NOTHING to do with bike power, it's simply comfort level, because most times i will come up on the SV's so fast in a turn, that i pretty much have to hit the brakes to avoid hitting them.. (where the SV is suppose to be strong, and leave the big I-4's).

i think the SV's a good platform, but at the same time, i think a lot of people hide behind the "66 HP" thing, and until i see someone pull away from me in the middle of a turn, and me having to use the power of the 1k to catch up, THEN i'll agree that they're being held back by the lack of power.

my $0.02

Jeff

ps. looks like i'll be going up on sunday this weekend.. anyone else want me to follow them?

Burst
Fri 7/11/03, 5:40PM
yeah, I want you to follow me again so I can do a run with nobody in front of me.... :D

You guys should ride with Deno. He is by far the fastest guy i've ever seen on a SV. Although he doesn't always ride fast, when he wants to, he's gone.

Damn kids. :D

try these..
Deno going uphill on the tight side (http://www.snailpower.com/browse/movie/deno-uphill.wmv )
Deno going downhill on the tight side (http://www.snailpower.com/browse/movie/deno-downhill.wmv )

these will probably only be up for a day or two, and then hopefully at a new location, that's got better transfer rate..

they're about 8 megs each.

Nice videos, looks like you guys really know that road well.

i guess these videos are good for reviewin' your lines and riding technique... but the entertainment factor just isn't there...

especially after watchin' the pestilence ride behind videos, where they blast through palomar...
