View Full Version : SV Wrenchfest, Sunday 8/18
Bike makin' weird noises? Chain falling off your sprocket? Or just wanna know how to change your oil? Bring your SV over to Gregg's house and get the low down on how to keep your bike from breaking down. Bring any general questions and your trustworthy, incredibly skilled and talented SoCalSVRiders members will lend a hand to get your two wheeled machine up to par! If you want to change your oil, or bleed your brake lines, do valve clearance adjustments, change your fork oil, sync your carbs, rejet, etc., make sure you stop by the shop and pick the necessary supplies and we'll help you out with the rest. If you have any questions about what to buy or anything in general, feel free to ask.
The Wrenchfest will be held at Gregg's house, located in Murrieta.
Directions:

Nate - I just made a DIY carb synching tool...haven't used it yet, but it seems like it should be easy....let me know if you'd like to try it out...

You are testing the vacuum created by each carb, right? Making sure they're equal.
How does one "make" a tool for that?
buymenow00
Thu 8/8/02, 9:34AM
It's bascially clear hose with liquid in it...hook each end up to a carb and balance the vacuum so that the liquid does not move...
Let me know if you're interested in using it...I may give it a go this weekend...

I'll be there... And the next weekend I'll probably change oil when we do shims...
Gregg, got a torque wrench? I haven't tightened my frame/chassis bolts... Ever... I should probably do that... :squid:
Brad
Yes I have a torque wrench...... I suppose I should prolly torque my chassis bolt too. I have not done this either. oops :D
So I'll get a couple of 5 gallon buckets so we can dispose of the oil properly. I'll also pick up a set of metric sockets since my collection seems to be disappearing.

Where is Greg's house?? I really need to change my fork oil and I have been trying to make it to one of these get togethers but never seem to be able to...
I can probably make this one just don't want to have to ride 500 miles from SD if you know what I mean.
Also if it isn't local anyone from SD going want to ride up together?
Thanks in advance for the info.
I'm in SD, and am going. I changed my fork oil to 15W about a month ago. Feels much better. Gregg's house is somewhere in Murrieta -- not very far.

Thu 8/8/02, 9:06PM
Greggs' house is about equal distance from SD and LA, off of Highway 15. I'm sure he will give directions soon................
Oh..........he lives right next to a strip joint.............. The last time we were there,... heh heh...... oh my goodness........ we almost..................
.......... but I digress.
:D
Wasn't it you Rod that was complaining of empty promises? Now you are gonna get everyones hopes up..... You know as well as I do that there isn't even a porn shop in this town, let alone a strip joint. :D

This sounds cool. I do need to change my fork oil. What else would I need to bring besides the oil? And should I go 15W or 20W?
dillweed...... How much do you weigh? If you are on the light side(under 150) you may want to go with 15wt. If you are rapidly moving towards the slightly-tubby-side (like myself) I would say definitely go for the 20wt.. I have 15 in my forks right now and wish I had doen the 20wt. It still dives a little too suddenly for my taste.

I'm only 150, so I'll go with 15W. I'm also wondering about installing emulators......they say it's a drop-in mod, but they also say you have to drill out the factory piston.....so I guess that's something I have to let a shop do???

Sun 8/11/02, 8:22PM
I'll be going ... I'm in Huntington Beach, anyone in the area that wants to join, we can meet up. I know the way there.

You're able to go Leigh? Good, then I can ride down there with you.

I'll be leaving from Lake Forest/Irvine... You guys want to just head down the 5, and take Ortega over the hills? I certainly don't want to go all the way up to the 91...
What time?
Brad
Kurt'sSV
Mon 8/12/02, 9:30AM
I think I would like to go over Ortega to the 15. Taking the 91 to the 15 is a way to go that allows you to ride REALLY fast the whole time, but it feels like you're on the freeway for ever.
So that's my vote.
ersigh
Mon 8/12/02, 10:06AM
Ortega takes FOREVER tho' ... it's a longer ride ... it'll depend for me on the weather and at what time a day we'll be riding. I won't ride Ortega if we are going at a time of a day where we have to go 35 the whole time around corners I usually got at least 70 around ...
Kurt'sSV
Mon 8/12/02, 10:15AM
I know Ortega gets bussy fast so I'm going to want to get to Greggs as early as he'll allow. If he doesn't mind me showing up at 6 a.m. then I'll be there @ that time.
(you an early bird Gregg?)

Mon 8/12/02, 10:20AM
Hey Kurt, if you want to show up that early by all means.... You can help me get the garage all prepped before everyone gets here. :D Let me know, I'll email you directions directly to my house. Everyone else will be meeting at the gas station down the road (unless they already know where I live)

Mon 8/12/02, 10:26AM
I'll be fine with an early morning ride...
I think 6 am is a bit impossible though... I'd be up to leave by 7:15-7:30 from Lake Forest though...

Mon 8/12/02, 10:31AM
Yeah, I was actuall joking about the 6 am thing. But I'd like to get to Greggs early so I can get started with some things on my bike. And if Gregg could use a hand in prepping his garage for the day, then I'd love to help (because I'll need his help on a lot of things)
yeah, everyone who is going needs to be at the Shell station by 9am. The directions are in the first post on this thread.
If anyone can bring their own tools please do so. It will be a long process if we are all trying to use the same wrench........
Afterward we'll go for a nice ride, maybe up to Idyllwild.

I've never ridden Ortega actually... And since I'll be living in Lake Forest, I think I'll get to know it well :)

I sort of lost my attraction to it after awhile, partially because I got tired of getting up so early to get decent riding in... but also because it is a very high speed road in order for it to really be fun/challenging ... the side that seems to be popular w/some SV'rs, I don't care for because of the sheer drop on the side of the road, and the close call that I had ... (and the fact that i began riding w/a group who had a close friend die there ... flying ... well more like falling, about 200 feet to his death) ...
But I do think it is an enjoyable road, I just wish there were less cops and cars there ...
