View Full Version : Angelo's Upholstery for cheap custom seat

Not sure if this should be in the "Maintenance" forum or in "General Discussion" but...
I just went to Angelo's Upholstery to get my seat lowered today for $20 (per NukleoN's suggestion in a previous thread.)
I'm 5'8" and short in the leg (apparently that missing length went straight to my arms. My knuckles drag. So sue me.)
I'm 80% happy with the seat. My feet are now flat on the ground, and I feel much more stable in 2 up riding and much more confident in my ability to back my bike up. However, the padding is so sparse and light now that I can feel the seat frame while I'm riding. Wasn't a problem going home, but I'm not sure about how I'd feel on a long triip.
It was ungodly hot in the Valley today, so I decided to stay and watch him make the seat. John (Angelo) took out my original foam and replaced it with 1" thick furniture foam. I noticed that the foam he used to shape the seat with was far less dense than the stock foam of the original SV650 seat.
Of course it's nice to have the original foam around so that in case you don't like the new seating setup, you can get your original seat back.
But I would suggest one of 2 things:
1.) See if he has denser foam that is more comparable to the stock foam in the original suzuki seat. This might not be an option as I'm suspecting that he was using the densest foam he had on hand.
2.) Pay him a little extra and ask him to shape you a new seat out of the original Suzuki foam. I think that a 1" thick seat made of the original, stock foam would make for a much better seat.
Otherwise here's my review of the seat:
Like I said, I'm 5'8". I have a standard unfaired 2001 SV650. My legs are now a little more compressed when I ride, and my riding position is more "upright" than before (which I actually like since I like touring on my SV.) However, I found by scooting back in the seat, i was still able to get a more aggressive riding position for twisties that was still plenty effective. I do have to get used to the new leg position, tho.
The bike looks much cooler now than it did before. The seat now conforms to the natural contours of the seat frame and gives the bike a much sexier, curvy look (in my opinion.) I don't have a digital camera on hand, so I can't post a picture just yet, but think I saw one in one of the other threads.
So aside from the too soft padding in the seat, I'm very pleased with the functionality and especially the look. Being able to put my feet flat on the ground at a standstill makes everything worth it (to me). Again, I stongly suggest that anyone who decides to do this to have the new seat shaped from the original Suzuki foam.
Remember, you'll be sacrificing leg room while you are riding and putting yourself in a much more upright riding position.
John Angelo himself is a really really nice guy and he definitely remembers all "the guys from that Suzuki Motorcycle club" that have been spreading his name word of mouth.

He only charged me $10 ... ;) But I gave him a $20 to be fair to everyone else.
:D
My seat seems fine. It just took me awhile to adjust to being in a different place on the bike ... my wrists hurt for awhile until my muscles adjusted ...

Hmmm...I recall Nuke saying to use 1" high-density foam...could that be the difference? I've ridden on Nuke's bike and his seat is pretty firm, and I don't remember being able to feel the seat frame...Leigh can you feel your frame...I mean your seat frame...I mean, you know what I mean! ;)
Don't remember hearing from you before brother...so welcome to the boards!!

Thanks! I'm pretty new. Been lurking for awhile, cause I never really had a reason to write until recently. Maybe I'll have some faces to put to names if I can make it down to the Gathering of masses.
Do you think they're open today (Monday)? Got the machine when I called...

They should be open today. I've never gotten ahold of them through the phone before. I always have to call and leave a message.

Uhm, I think I can feel the seat frame ... I never cared. I don't worry abotu butt comfort cuz even with it like it is, it's a lot better than any of the hondas i've been on ... I've just noticed that when I'm hanging off the bike, and hit a bump, sometimes I'm a bit bruised for a day or two ... if you know what I mean ...

Yep, it was open! John really is a NICE guy! Li-An had her motorcycle seat re-upholstered with 2" thick high-density foam instead of the thin, hard stock foam.

John called me and let me know that he's ordering even firmer foam (1.8 grade) than he's using now (1.2) Bony butts like me are rejoicing all over Los Angeles.

Where is Angelo's Upholstery? Can you provide contact info. Right now I'm on my tippy-toes and a lower seat would probably make my riding a little easier. :)

It's in the Shops List (http://www.socalsvriders.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=242). I found out their address and phone by using Yahoo Yellow Pages.
This website also has a handy "Search" function.

Man this rocks. I am so glad everyone is going to John Angelo for their seat mods. I am telling you, this is by far the best $20 I spent on my SV...and John is a really great guy and I am sure he loves the business. I think it's great that he embraces the motorcyclists so much!
As for me, I was the first to go to him after seeing the idea on the main SV board, and I got the 1" high density foam. The seat is a bit more firm, but I can tell that after 5 hours going to and from San Jose and L.A., it's not my butt that complains but my legs (they want to stretch out). The seat lowers you more on the bike so you lose a bit of leg room, but the thing is, if you're too short to touch the ground, chances are you won't mind if the pegs are essentially raised by lowering the seat. ;)
In any case..I am super happy with my seat..I am glad to be able to touch the ground and I've even had my brother on the back of my bike..I wouldn't have been able to do that with the stock seat height.
It's awesome John is ordering more dense foam..I'd recommend that. It was funny when he offered Leigh the $10 femme discount! She was cool and gave him $20 anyway hahaha. Way to go Leigh.
I really really think Angelo should advertise with this site! I no longer live down there but will still recommend that everyone who is short of inseam pay him a visit, SV or not!
By the way, I DID buy a Sargent seat before having my seat cut down. The Sargent, while a work of art, *barely* helped the inseam problem. Don't believe the hype about lowering, it's not worth $230 to get a seat which maybe lowers you a half inch. If it's lowering you want, replace the seat foam and save a lot of cash. If it's comfort you want and inseam length is not a problem, I'd recommend the Sargent.

Ok, I've decided that I need to have this done. Too bad they're all the way up in North Hollywood. Kind of a long ride from San Diego. And, if they're not open weekends, I'd have to take a day off from work. John sounds like a good guy, and I'd like to be able to support his shop... Must find a way... Just in case I don't, though, does anyone know of a good shop in the San Diego area?

At least you'll be closer to the ground!
I still have my stock seat if you want to borrow it while you wait for yours to come back from Angelo's. I made a trip up with the gf to their shop in N. Hollywood and went shopping at Melrose afterwards. Wasn't really that far away.
(edit) She got 2" high density, cuz her stock seat off the Aprilia was too thin.
Cool. Thanks for the offer. I'll let you know what I decide to do.
If I could come up with another excuse to go up there, I'd feel better about making the ride. Shopping in Melrose doesn't quite do it for me. :)
Oh, and does anyone know offhand if they're open weekends? If not, I'll call 'em up and ask about sending my seat in.

I just got my seat done this morning at Angelo's. What a great experience. I showed up at 8 when they opened so I could make it to work on time. I was out of there in about a half hour and he even offered to put an extra cup of coffee on for me. The seat feels great and I like the riding position a lot better. This is probably the best $20 I've spent in a long time.
PasCaTT, did you get the 1" foam? Do you know what density/grade/whatever was used?
Had my seat off last night and tried sitting on it that way. Not too comfy, but it felt great to be able to have both feet flat on the ground. :D

I didn't really pay attention, but you can feel the plastic frame if you squeeze the seat hard (with your hand you sickos) =). It was very comfortable for my 12 mi ride to and from work today.

1" high-density foam.

Wed 10/2/02, 2:25PM
John called me a let me know that he now has an even denser foam in stock. It's called "rebond" or "re-bond". Looks like the foam equivalent of plywood (buncha different shreds of foam recycled together.) Apparently it's commonly used for motorcycle seats. Much firmer than the stock 1" foam that he's been using.
This morning I went down there at 8 am to have my seat re-padded. Cost about $40 (instead of $20) cause the material is more expensive, and it was totally worth it. I had him shave away most of the padding around where my inner thighs go, so that my legs can better reach the ground. Not a problem at all, cause when I lift my feet onto the pegs, my backside's resting sqare in the middle of the seat where there's still plenty of padding. Plus, that's how I noticed Sargeant seats and Corbin custom seats are carved.
The seat is much firmer (about the same firmness as a spongy wrestling or gym mat) but still spongy enough to be comfortable, but, most of all, I don't feel the plastic frame of my seat anymore when I sit down.
Just for a point of reference: I'm about 160lbs and have a moderate to bony ass (not a lot of junk back there.) While I didn't have *huge* problems with the padding in the previous seat (made with the 1" normal foam) it still bothered me, especially since i'm planning on taking a fairly long (2500 mi) motorcycle trip in a few weeks.
Apparently, I'm not the first to have used this foam. John said one other guy had it done last week. Anyone?
Anyhoo, the new foam is great. I'd recommend that anyone planning on going to Angelo's to check it out while you're there. If you're happy with your current Angelo seat, and/or you're not planning on doing any touring on your bike, it's probably not worth the trouble to switch foams.
If you're bony-assed folk, like me, give it some serious consideration.

Thanks for the report on the latest Angelo's technology! I had John shave my seat on the inside thigh area too so the width of the seat wouldn't impede my legs from getting to the ground. ;)
Hmm..maybe I should upgrade to the stiffer foam...
Great. Thanks for the info! Now I'm glad I waited. I'm like 5'7" with short legs and a somewhat bony ass, so that sounds like the way to go for me. Now I just need to find the time to get up there...or maybe I'll just mail my seat in...

I've been riding on the higher-density foam for about a week now... I'm 5'6", 160lbs. I had it cut down mainly b/c of height issues, but have found it to be pretty comfortable... like brother said, it's a firmer material (made for gym equipment and stuff) that looks like carpet padding, but you definitely won't feel any of the plastic underneath it. It'll make the seat kind of lumpy-looking, but I totally recommend it!
Upholstered seat on the left, stock foam, Rebond foam on the right:
Hey Nukleon or anyone else who can answer,
do you think Angelo's could put a gel pad in the stock seat, or make a custom one with a gel pad in it? I just hate the the idea of paying over $100 for the brand new factory gel seat.

I just called them up to see about shipping my seat. Asked if they'd ever done gel, and the answer was no. Maybe you could try bringing some in to them and see what they can do with it?

Yeah Britt...
I'd get a flat piece of gel and see if he can lay that atop the foam before re-upholstering the seat cover...or even better...maybe he can order something for you? There's gotta be some kind of gel padding which can be cut to shape...that'd be ideal over the new foam.
Ya, I think that would be a lot cheaper than getting a whole new factory gel seat!

I just wanted to check and see how people are doing with their lowered seats (longer term test).
What do people feel is the best foam to use (rebond or high density foam)?
Are the seats comfortable for say 200-300 miles?
Did people utilize their stock cover?
Can John match the stock cover?
I will also be calling him today.
Would cutting the stock foam down to 1-1.5 inches be a valid option?
It seems one reaches a point of diminising returns as far as being able to touch easier. Even witht seat off the width of the bike forces your legs out. I can flat foot with no seat but without a lot of excess length. I have a 30" inseam. I wonder if the difference between 1 and 1.5 inch thick seat really translates to a half on inch difference at your feet.
Thanks,
Mike

Hey there,
I have a 29" inseam and having my seat cut and reshaped was the best mod I have done. I was the first one from this board to go to Angelo and I haven't thought twice about comfort. I've ridden to L.A. and back a few times (355 miles or so) and it's no big deal...the biggest problem is stretching my legs out, not bum soreness.
It's a great mod if you're having trouble touching the ground or if you want to effectively raise your bars.
Angelo used the stock seat cover...he basically replaces the existing foam with 1" high density foam or that new foam people are talking about. You can always put the old foam back in if you want.

Mon 2/10/03, 2:05PM
I'm loving the seat. The seat looks slightly lumpy because of the nature of the "rebond" foam, but it's not enough to be an eyesore.
I didn't have the original stock foam cut down, but I had a 1" layer of high density foam, which people on the site seem to have been fine with, but I was always bothered by the fact that I could feel the seat frame beneath my butt. Wasn't particularly uncomfortable, I just didn't like it. The rebond that I had installed later is much firmer, so that I still get adequate cushioning with only 1.5" of padding and I don't feel the seat frame. I've had this setup for about 4-5 months now. Did a 3000 mile LA to Seattle to LA trip with it with no probs.
John uses the stock cover
you're right about the diminishing returns. I even think you could get away with cutting the stock foam down to 2" instead of just 1" and just taper it correctly because the seat width does push your legs out anyway so anything less than 1.5" really doesn't help you touch the ground anymore. If anything it'll just "raise" your handlebars when you're in your riding position.
Anyhow, you can't go wrong with the rebond.
NukleoN
Mon 2/10/03, 2:18PM
Yeah I forgot to mention that I asked John to keep my seat tapered so I could avoid the width problems. To see what I mean..sit on a CBR 600F4i and then sit on the Suzuki SV650...both have 31.7 inch claimed seat height, but the CBR has a wider seat and feels oh so much taller. :)
Anyhoo, I'm super happy with my seat. Props to John for doing my motorcycle seat perfectly the first time! I don't think he had done this before I took mine in, but I could be wrong (you wouldn't know it by the excellent workmanship). ;)

Thanks,

Mon 2/10/03, 10:24PM
I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure it's 1.5" (he only had one size.) Like I said, 1" wouldn't give you any advantage in putting your feet flat on the ground.
either way, I think the rebond he had came in 1.5"

I live in Sacramento and don't see the possibilty of taking my bike all the way to LA to get my seats lowered. Anyone dealt with Angelo over the mail. Please let me know how it worked out.
I have the same question as crskumar.
I live in Nevada City, CA and would like to know more about mailing the seat.
Although i'm not part of the inseam challenged I would like to lower the seat down to say 1.5" to get my weight lower on the bike and at the same time make it more comfy for longer rides. And the price is RIGHT!

You guys are so lucky.
I've seen this thread from time to time, so I decided to check out upholstery shops up here in Seattle.
First, I called this shop that advertises on a local website. He said he'd cut the seat down for $75.00 (about 2"), but that he really didn't like to do that, since people seem to complain about the seat being hard after that. For a mere $200.00, he'd cut the foam down and reupholster it with a gel pad. Oh, and it would take about a week.
Out of three other upholstery shops, only one was even remotely interested, and said that he's backed up for the next month, but if I wanted to come in early in the morning, he'd let me use the equiptment to shave the foam down.
I went out today with my wife to see if we could find something at Bent Bike (motorcycle salvage store), and I stopped at "foam rubber city"... seemed hopeful, until the guy there basically said he would cut it down for free if I would restaple it myself (I've taken the vinyl off already), and I asked him about gel, and he thought that was a better idea.
At Bent Bike, they didn't have any gel pads, and the idiot biker dude that worked there said that a gel pad big enough for my seat would cost $259.00.
I also tried a honda motorcycle dealership, who were willing to order a gel pad, but were not willing to have it drop-shipped to my house. (Okay dude, I can order it online myself, and not pay you guys... and save a couple of days to boot).
So I resigned myself to ordering a gel pad insert thats big enough to cover the top of the plastic base... Then I'm going to put the vinyl right over the top... hopefully that should be good enough...
tomonroe...if you're not too set on getting gel, you can always mail your seat to John. If you can't do without a seat for the week or so I'm guessing it would take, you can usually pick up an extra seat on eBay for ~$25.

I've just ordered an extra large gel pad. I'm going to cut it down to the exact same shape as the plastic frame for the seat, then staple/glue the vinyl to it. We'll see how it goes...
If its too bad, I'm going to pick up another seat on Ebay.

hey guys, just droppin a quick post here to throw out some good words for john angelo and his upholstering skills.
i'm from Pennsylvania, and i sent my seat out the 13th, he got it, adjusted it, and i got it back on the 19th. now thats quick cross-country service. john was a pleasure to work with and everything went smoothly. got my seat back yesterday and i was more than happy with it, i was downright excited.
i could actually plant my feet on the ground firmly, back up with ease, and my bike looks just a little bit curvier (i'll post a pic soon). theres absolutley no lumps in it, and its still nice and comfortable for longer rides. also had him shave down the thigh padding which worked great.
being 5'6", this is by far the best investment i've made yet. if you're vertically challenged, this is the route to go. dont bother with the suspension, dont get out your moms platform shoes, just spend the 40 bucks and you'll be good to go. already got a bunch of people at the cycle shop i work at wantin to send theirs in. thanks again john!

Hey all,
I just did my first Mod on my bike, and I'm proud to say it was to re-upholster the stock seat. I went to John Angelo's today and he did an excellent job, I didn't really have an appointment and he helped me right on the spot. A quick half hour later and I have something that will help me out everytime I ride. I can't stress how helpful and friendly John is, he truely deserves as much buisness as we can give him. So before you think about that $150-$200. Corbin, or whatever, give John a call.
And if you'er reading this John, don't forget to call that number in August and come out and see a live show.
John re-stuffed my rear seat today. Even before I walked through the door, he said, "You must be one of the SV guys." Heh. :groove: Dropped off my seat, ate lunch at Carl's Junior, and got back a plush couch in less than 30 minutes. He even took the time to explain what he did. Awesome service! Now, I just have to wait for my mrs. to get back and test drive the seat.

I had Angelo put on an extra thick layer of foam, and he guaranteed there was no way I could compress it to the point where I would touch plastic. He also shaped it like a Corbin. I was tired of my bony ass bottoming out on the seat. So I may have gained some height.
Now I feel I'm such the lazy sport-tourer that I'm going to go work on my gut.

I live in Seattle, so I unfortunately don't have the option of going to Angelo's. My dealer says he can cut down the seat using a procedure similar to Angelo's for $100.
However, the Suzuki gel seat costs about $120. So I thought perhaps it would be better just to buy that seat. Does anyone have any experience with how much extra clearance the Suzuki gel seat gives someone? I have a 29-30 in. inseam.
Thanks!

Hey Rain,
You can just mail your seat to John if you'd like, knowing he has the experience to do it right, the first time.
The gel seat maybe will let you touch down about an inch more (max) from what I've heard, though some seem to think it doesn't help much at all.
The *undisputed* best way to lower yourself on the SV (without lowering your bike) is to have the stock foam swapped for thinner foam, whether that be 1" high density (what I have) or rebond (which is stiffer and a bit more expensive). Of course, you can always cut the stock foam, but it makes sense to go with stiffer foam if there is less of it.
I have a 29" inseam and love the new seat John made for me.
After you re-do the seat, you can consider getting some boots which will help you touch down better. They're a secret weapon known as the Frey-Daytona M-Star boots (also known as Ladystar if you fall into a particular size range). This boot doesn't have any obvious gender markings on the outside, so the name doesn't matter...what does matter is that it has 3/4" of lift in the inside of the boot (and a decently-sized heel), giving you more inseam to ride those insanely tall bikes.
Use this in combination with a re-foamed seat and you got yourself plenty of inseam to go around.
Oh, here's a link to that boot...

Can somebody kindly clue me on contacting Angelo's? My poor butt has suffered long enough on the stock '03 seat and I'm not gonna fork out $270 to Sargent for a re-do.
Has anybody used another upholstery shop in north SD county with any good results?
Thanks.

Hello Everyone,
I just purchased an 02' SV650S and am looking for a recommendation on an Upholsterer in the Bay Area. I want to have the seat shaved or redone with 1 inch high density foam.
Can anyone help?
Thanks!!:D

You might want to just mail your seat down to John at Angelo's Upholstery in North Hollywood. He rides an SV himself (I'm pretty sure) and he's a great guy to work with. I'm in the San Diego area and sent both the main and passenger seat to him and he did a great job.
He replaced the foam on the front seat, lowered it about 3/4 of an inch and gave me my choice of fabrics (mailed me samples to choose from before I sent him the seats).
Because I didn't want the passenger seat to have a different look than the main seat, he didn't change the foam but he wrapped it with dacron to smooth out the ridges then covered it with the same fabric as the main seat.
I've been real happy with the main seat in terms of the height and support. It wore in real well and 300 miles is a comfortable ride with little to no butt burn.
$60 for the main seat, $20 for the rear. Can't beat it.
Give him a call at 818-985-3453 if you can't find anyone around you.

Hey Nef, I don't remember your wife's ass being all that boney...
Aw, come on now, just funnin'.
John at Angelo's (John Angelo, actually) redid my passenger seat by wrapping it with dacron to give it a little more cush and covering with new fabric to match the new fabric on the front -- $20.
Probably a little more if you want the foam replaced.

After reading the posts on this board I called John and left a message about shipping my seat out to him (I'm in NJ). He promptly called back and left a message on my cell saying that I could ship it out there with my information and a prepaid return slip and he'd have it done basically the same day. I'm truly amazed at the turn-around time.
However, he also mentioned that the cost would be $60!?! What happened to the $10-$25 everyone was posting on here? Did he finally realize he had a good thing going and could get more than the $25 he was asking? I could put that $60 towards a new seat, either OEM or aftermarket. I have been eyeing that Suzuki short seat.
I haven't called him back to ask him, but I know he checks here every now and again. Anyone got any ideas what's going on?
Thanks

hmmm, he charged me $40 less than a year ago (i do remember when he raised it from $20 to $40)
you might want to just check around with local upholstry shops too...all he does is replace the foam with denser stuff and shave it down to your specifications...no biggie really if you have the tools

Go to a local auto upholstery shop. They should be able to handle it, I've done this before and got good results.

He only charged me a $20 coz it was the first SV seat job, if not his first ever bike job. :D Don't feel too bad. Even at $60 it's not a bad deal...unless you want to tackle the job yourself. Much cheaper than a new seat and a new seat won't come close to the lowering effect you get with a re-upholstered seat.

60 bucks is ridiculous, takes him no time at all, and pennies in material.

He Charge me $40 about 3 months ago. that was for using the same cover material adding replacing the standard padding with denser material He did say that if I wanted to change the cover material it would be aprox $60. I sat while he did it, it took about 40 minutes. Near an hours worth of custom work for $40 seemed like a bargain.

I cut the stock seat down myself. It wasn't that difficult. I just removed the staples holding the seatcover on, and took a long knife and cut the foam in half. Then I took some 80 grit sandpaper and shaped it to what I thought looked good and smooth. I used 150 grit sandpaper and smoothed out the finish. Then I put the seatcover back on and restapled it down. It looks and works great! I did this last year on my '02 SVS and haven't had any problems with it at all. You can write me if you want more details. (and pix)
I removed the stock seat cover, and cut a square section out of the rear side and replace it with softer foam from a local fabrics store. Restapled it too..
The stock seat foam was too hard, hurt my arse..

Sounds like he charges $40 now to re-upholster the seat. As for a design..gee I don't know...that's probably gonna jack up the price big time if he does it at all. If you like dragons you're probably better off just getting a custom decal made and sticking it on your windscreen, tank, fairing, etc.

I got my seat done on my ex500 over the weekend. I made an appointment on a Saturday and John shaved off approximately 2 inches off the OEM foam. We decided against the new 1" high density foam or the rebond because the ex500 seat is a long one piece that covers both the rider and the passenger. It could be done but it'll cost more. John only charge me $40 for approximately 1.5 hour of his time. John is one cool guy. I highly recommend his services to anyone.
I took the bike out on Sunday for a 140 miles ride and it is quite comfortable even with 2" padding taken off. I am only 5' 3" and almost able to flat foot. Thus far it's the best mod I've done on the bike. Thanks John!!

Per recommendations from this site, I just paid a visit to John Angelo this morning. All the posts about his superior quality of work as well as him being an awesomely nice guy is true. We need to get this guy into the SV seat shaving industry permanently! For the price, you couldn't do a better job yourself unless you had industrial quality materials and tools - even the staple gun was pneumatic! And talk about hospitality.. he kept trying to feed me and my gf pastries. If you need your seat shaved, this is the place to go! I drove an hour from OC and it was well worth the time; I would probably make the drive even from SD.

The material that he uses.... How does it feel compared to the stock cushion? I'm around 6' so I wouldn't want it shaved any... Just wondering if the added comfort is worth 60 bucks. Whatcha think Pete?

Personally I couldn't stand the stock seat. I didn't like how flat it was on top and didn't think it matched the bike. What Angelo does is not only replace the material and lower the seat, but he also contours it so it flows better with the rest of the bike. I think it looks great. I'm not sure what the material is called that he uses, but I think it's more than comfortable for average rides. Give him a call and talk to him about what you want in a seat. I talked to him the whole time about this site and our word of mouth, he says he does about 2-3 seats a week, I'm sure he'd be willing to work with you.

Hey, first time post so wassup all.
Just got my seat done @ Angelo's 3 days ago, and I must agree. He does good work AND it's a great deal. He charged me less than the $40 that everyone's been getting. That's for like 40mins of custom work. Seems like a good deal to me. He's also super nice. Of course I brought a 6pack with me, since I knew I'd have nothing better to do than to chitchat while I waited there. (Hint: He seems to charge $$ based on how much he likes you. So be nice. He also likes beer... so... bring some.)
As for the work, the seat is nice and smooth and it's now A LOT more curvy-sexy. Plus, it brings my cursedly short legs closer to the ground. Can almost flat-foot both sides now. Think I might just get confident enough now to try sticking the gf in the back... uh, you know what I mean...

Hi All,
Just got my seat redone this morning. John is really freakin cool. Said he would come to the gathering this year.
I'm 5'11", so I didn't need too much lowering. My big complaint was that my inner thighs would be so very uncomfortable after 1+ hour of riding. The outer edges of the wide part of the seat just dig in over a long period of time.
In addition to trying some of that lovely rebond stuff, I asked John if he would crown the top portion of the seat (it's remarkably flat stock, I think).
Unfortunately, this idea struck me too late in the fabrication process. What he did do for me is top the rebond with about an inch of HR50 foam (feels springy-er than the stock seat foam - better that merely padding it with cotton, I think).
John asked for $40. I gave him $50 because he is a cool guy and entertained my ideas about improving the setup.
Felt good on the way to work. Lost about 1 inch of height - not too much change in riding position. I'll really road test it this weekend when I ride to Vegas and report back.

Just got back from Vegas. The seat peformed well, but I believe that it was mostly due to the fact that it was lowered. The change in riding position height, although slight, was enough to alleviate pressure on the rear of the legs.
Unfortunately, the knees become further bent, which is another source of discomfort. With the change in riding position, though, I'm able to rest my elbows on my knees. All in all, money well spent.

Use the supplied allen wrenches in the tool kit (black box in front of the shock, opens from left side of bike) , and remove the 2 black plastic panels below the seat on either side. This will give access to the 2 bolts that hold the seat on. Remove those and you can get the seat off.

I had John reshape and refoam my seat before moving to NY. I just left a box with postage on it with him and he sent it to me in NY. Have yet to install it (damn regulator/rectifier problems, and they're backordered for 2 weeks, ), but he did a great job from what I can tell so far.
I'm sure if you send him your seat in the mail he'll take care of it. Or, you could drop it off on the way back from Buttonwillow... the shop is close to 170 or 5 freeways.
I done a search on lowering the highet on the bike and every one seem to go with the seat. My Q is how comfy is it after that. For now i find my OEM seat to be o.k with no problems with comfort. Would shaving the seat make it worse on comfort??? or lets put it this way would it be much worse on comfort???

for me it made the seat more comfortable...especially on long runs. i mean, it's still hurts after 3 or 4 hours in the saddle...but it's better than the hour or less with the stock seat. i believe it's because he uses a denser foam to shave down.
What about the suzuki low seat?? how would you compare it to the shaved seat in comfort and how much lower is it realy compare to orignal. While at it what do you guys think about the gel seat??? It seems that the lower seat is the best option so i want find which is the best option of the three seats... thanks for all your help in spending the time to answer.
Till now it seems that shaving the seat is the best way to go.

For those that have added material to make the seat higher, how much height did you gain? I'm 6'3, and a little extra legroom would not be a bad thing. Did you notice any increased leg comfort at all?
I just got my seat back from Angelo's (I'm in New Jersey) and it doesn't appear to fit quite the same as before.
Is it normal to have a gap between the front of the seat and the tank?
Can I adjust something to make it fit snugly against the tank like it did prior to Angelo doing work on it?

First let me thank John Angelo for the extra mile he went for repadding my SV650s seat (and the extracurricluar effort in getting my seat back to me--see bottom of post). The quality of work was very professional and well done.
I have had the experience of both Angelo's reseat work and the OEM low seat.
I stand 5ft 5in. The stock oem seat is 31.5in. With the stock seat I had my toes on the ground, but not the balls of my feet. I felt very uncomfortable on the bike in terms of balance.
With the OEM low seat (which lowers the seat height to 31.1in), I was able to put my toes and some portion of the balls of my feet on the ground. I had a good balance to the bike with this particular seat, but could not put enough of my feet on the ground to feel comfortable.
With John Angelo's Uphosltery seat, I can automatically tell that the seat is curved much lower than the OEM low seat and feels to be much lower than the OEM low seat. With Angelo's seat, I can only put my toes and the ball of my feet down, but not my arches nor my heels. I was a little dissappointed that I could not put all of my feet down completely, but John says that after riding on my new seat for the next few weeks, the 1" rebond foam will sink down a little, giving me more foot contact to the ground. --With this new seat, I noticed a different balance point on the bike, as if I have to balance the bike more. It is not the feeling where you just have to get used to a new seat. In my opinion, it just FEELS like there is a different balance point on the seat--maybe due to the new contours of the seat?????
The seat is comfortable for the short time I have ridden it and the quality of work and effort by John Angelo's is awesome. Overall, I would recommend his work. His product is still cheaper and more comfortable than an OEM low seat ($52).
--->If i had to do the process over again, I would GO AND DRIVE OVER TO THE UPHOLSTERY SHOP (if you live in So Cal), instead of mailing it back and forth. John and I had run into some issues with the UPS and the postal service, resulting in significant delays (i.e. lost/misplaced the package).

Just got my gixxer seat done by John. He's a great guy, gave my seat priority over other jobs because of our forum...and it turned out great. Highly recommended.

Anyone heard of a lowered seat for a 2003 sv1000s? or maybe anyone know of someone that will shave a seat. I'm pretty short and would like for more of my foot to touch the ground when stopped and someone told me about a lowered seat option. is there such a thing.
Thanks, Derek

So upon reading this thread, and me being not so tall, I took my seat to Angelo's Upholstery after work today to have John redo my seat. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow after work but let me tell you, John is THE nicest guy to deal with. There is no doubt in my mind that the seat will come out great. I'll update you guys tomorrow.
John Angelo rocks!

I'm going down there tomm. to get my seat done and I'm going to have him look at my ktm 125 seat and see if he can shave that too. I'll give an update when done. john seems cool and very easy to talk to.

Update: The seat rocks! Just as I expected, John did a great job. Seat is now lower but still very comfortable, almost like the OEM Gel Seat. Thumbs up for John Angelo at Angelo's Upholstery. Not only does he do quality work, he's a great guy too. I'm glad he's so close to me. Thanks neighbor!

I just went there this morning, and had my seat done. John was very friendly and got me taken care of to get to work on time. I'll be goin to friscos bike night tonight, so i'll see how the new seat feels. But so far the quality looks great.

Went down to Angelos last week and got my SV seat and my dirtbike seat done. Done in about 2.5 hours and on my way home. Tried it out the other day and all I have to say is I like feeling like I'm not going to drop the bike everytime I stop and feels probably better than it did before. John's cool and easy to deal with.

When i called him, I just left a message. He got back to me after a few hours. I set up an early morning time to get to his shop, 7:30am. Was done in about 30-45min. still had enough time to get over the hill to work on time.

You didn't get a tracking# for your package?

Fri 2/9/07, 4:11PM
my post office is horrible with that, I had gotten a headlight from someone off the svrider site that lived in davis, ca which I live about 3 hours away. The guy sent it to me I paid extra for tracking and for some reason, the last tracking date it gave me from when I recieved it was about a week and a half old. so it took about 2 weeks to recieve a package they said would take about 1 day. I have a feeling the same is happening again to me. Just wanted to contact him to see when he had sent out the seat.
Damn USPS:sad: Their policy is that I cannot file a claim unless 14 days have passed from the scheduled date.

got the seat in, looks great cost me about $52 with shipping, 40 for the seat, rest for shipping back and forth. Looks great real low slope to it, but have yet to take it on the road. Worth it imo since my shaving of my 03 seat on my old svs turned out horrible, and getting qoutes from my 05 sv seat around my area were running between $120-$160. Thumbs up all around.:D

Just went with pAint to Angelo's Yesterday.... Very cool guy to deal with... Unfortunatley he does not have a web page .. we were actually talking to him about it.... He said he is willing to do some deal if anyone is willing to help him make a webpage for him...
His Price is $40 but he did mention with prices going up.. He will be raising his price on the Seats within the next 2 months for like $10 more or so..
I also asked him what his hours were and he said
Mon-Fri 8am-5pm
Sat. 8am-12pm... but call and make an appt. with him..
Sun Closed..
So if any admins can add the hours to the shop list under Angelo's it will make it easier and people wont have to ask the same question..
