View Full Version : General engine noises?

...is this normal? When the engine gets warmed up ( 2002, 1k miles ), I hear tappet noises. Not so loud that I think I'm going to throw a rod, but loud enough that it makes me listen. It is related to engine speed, and falls into the "slight knocking/ticking" catagory. Does anyone else have this issue, or am I being paranoid? Will this reduce with miles on the bike? Should I have the dealer look at it just so I'll have it on the record? Otherwise, the bike is great. I want to replace the pipe, but am leary of the dealer saying the pipe is the cause for any malfunction afterwards.

TIA, Doug

It sounds like a major problem.....If you sell me the bike cheep the problem will go away and i can turn it into a race bike.... see everyone wins! :D

I might be talking out of my ass but i think i remember some posts on svrider.com about this problem. i think it was a cam chain slapping. the tensioner wasnt adjusted right... im not sure.. i hope this helps... anyone else?

Yeah,
Sounds just like the cam chain tensioner... Some people's bikes, it makes more noise than others, mine seems fine... It's not a real problem, but usually since it's a fairly well known problem, if you take it into a dealer, they'll take care of it (or so I'm told)... If you don't care, don't worry about it...
Might be a good idea to let someone who knows the sound of the cam chain tensioner to listen to it though, just to make sure.

Yep...could be cam chain tensioner. I had a '99 GSX-R600 that had the recall on the tensioners. The service was done by the dealer, but a year later the noise came back. I called the dealer and they said "so what". They said that since they did the recall work, they weren't liable to replace another one. So, I went to a performance shop and had a manual tensioner put in (for significantly less cost than the Suzuki crap) and the noise disappeared and to my knowledge is still gone. I sold the GSX-R in May. Hope it helps. Cost: Dealer was around $250 total. Performance shop $140.

Today I rode my bike about 10 miles before stopping at my uncles house. About 15 minutes later, I got back on it and started it up and i heard a buzzing noise. The noise seemed to be proportional to engine speed. Sounded like it could have been some bearing, possibly in the front or top of the engine. I was in this case , riding without my helmet (not a habit). So maybe it is a normal noise and I just never hear it when my helmet is on. Any help or ideas would be great. I am a n00b, but i wanna do it right and take good care of my bike so it will last. Thanks

first off.... WEAR YOUR HELMET!!!! ;) I know you don't *really* need to be told that but I had to anyway.

And yes, the first few times I zipped up and down my street after making changes to the jetting and such, without a helmet, I noticed many noises I had not before. How many miles are on your bike?

Could be the cam chain.

I was riding down to San Diego from L.A. Sunday and heard a random pop. Checked the bike out when I stopped, nothing to indicate a proble or source for any nose. A lot of times you hears shit that has nothing to do with you or your bike. For all I know it could have been some yahoo shooting at traffic from an over pass.

I WILL be wearing my helmet, unless im troubleshooting something. :) Today I completed the MSF class! Anyways, I'm sure it was the bike making the noise. The bike has only 1500 miles on it. Ive have only had it about a month so im still learning it.

Buy a loud slip-on, the sound will fade away :D

Hey everyone, I posted this in the Central Cal Maintenance day thread, but didn't know if everyone would see it. My bike is making a weird *buzzing* noise, I was hoping someone could help me figure out what it was. It's kinda a high pitched *eeeee* buzzing sound. Maybe something electronic?? It just bothers my delicate ears...which are very sensitive to high sounds. My BF said it sounded like a vacuum hose or something...but I don't know...help please!

From the gas tank? Front tire (http://www.socalsvriders.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=197)? A bee stuck in your front fairing?

Any of these threads help?

It's coming from the engine area...I know that sounds vague! It only happens when the bike is running...so none of those other threads apply.

We need a little more information... Does the noise change with engine speed? I.e. when you rev it up, does the noise change? Does it matter whether you're moving or standing still? If you're accelerating, does it happen and not happen while coasting or engine braking? Etc. etc...

You will commonly get a ticking noise from the cam chain tensioner, but that doesn't sound like this. If it's while you're moving (especially at higher speeds) it could be wind noise through something... It's really tough to diagnose though...

And it's a 2003, right? If it's something related to the fuel injection, it's probably something we've never heard before...

Ok...the noise is constant. It doesn't matter if it's in Neutral or in gear, it doesn't matter what the engine speed is...It makes the same noise regardless of what I do, as long as the bike is running. Does that help at all???

If you hear it when the ignition is on and before you push the start button, then it's the fuel pump, doing it's job.

No, it's not that. I know what that sound is, but that stops after about 3 seconds or so...but thanks anyway.

It's the fuel injection system. Mine does it too.

Mine too. Although its only when engine is above idle speedand in gear. I cant quite figure out that freaking noise...

My SV1000 is just three weeks old. I just changed the oil and filter for the first time (at 800 miles) and took a nice thrash up to GMR. On the way back I noticed a distinct knocking sound coming from the engine. It was most noticeable on trailing throttle/deceleration...thunkthunkthunkthunk...soft but definitely there. I can even feel it a bit through the bars. Sounds almost like a bad big end bearing or rod.

Took it to my local dealer and they said yep, definitely something amiss in there.
Said they'd have to tear it down completely and that would take weeks...

Has anyone experienced this before, esp. on the TL (I ask cause the 1000 engine is closer to the TL mill than the 650)? Performance seems unchanged. SHIT SHIT SHIT!!! I love this bike so much and will miss it when it's in the shop.....dammit!!

But, the thing is, it has never made that noise before...and I've had it for about 5 months and almost 4000 miles... So, now, all of a sudden, my fuel injection is making that weird noise??

See, but mine does it at idle...in gear...all the time, except when it's off of course!

I think the motor is exactly the same as on the TL. I've never felt anything like that until I blew my tranny... which was obvious...
other than that nothing.
Tiller?

Forgot to ask...

What did the dealer say it was or did they even have a guess?

I know a few folks up north with SV1000's, and they say the motor has some horrible low-rpm knock... More often when you're accelerating at low rpms, and then goes away at higher rpm...

I'm guessing this isn't your problem, but just to let people know, the SV1000 can have some noisy behavior down in the low rpm range...

The mech at the dealer said it sounded wierd too...then again, I doubt if they've had much experience working on the SV1k yet....

Don't you just love it when the professional tells you "yup, that's funky".... I know I love telling that to people who bring their computers to me. :D
