The area in between Highway 243 and Palomar Mountain should really disappear. Imagine being able to ride from the fast side, straight into the San Gregorio Mountains. The awesome climb and descent of Highway 74 would be there too, of course, and there’d be no barren wasteland to cover in between—that’s the way I would have made it.

Mountains belong together don’t they? Wouldn’t the world be a better place with Highway 243 right around the bend on Highway 79? A normal San Diego ride would be to hit Palomar, the 243, and Palms to Pines for a finish. What a day that would be! …But no…Instead I have to go out there and take on fifty miles of deserted plains full of nasty, sticky heat in order to get there. It’s really irritating, an inconvenience, and I pray every night for that distance to disappear. Boom! Gone from the face of the earth, just like that.

Angeles Crest should be here too. You could turn it sideways and run it alongside Sunrise Highway. That would save me oh-so-many unpleasant hours of trolling along on the freeway. People in LA might not like that, but we could always arrange a fair trade. Possibly 4th street?

Also, Borrego Springs needs to cool down during the summer. Maybe a small glacier could be placed somewhere nearby. That would certainly make the earth a better place to live, and save me the trouble of waiting until fall to hit up Borrego.

Lake Ellsinore could use a glacier during the summer too. Maybe even a few penguins as well. Who in their right mind wouldn’t like to see a few squawking penguins on their way to Ortega?

Last of all, I see no reason why Highland Valley Road can’t be around the corner from my house. I don’t need that 7-11. Clear out a few houses, a few McDonalds, a lot of Starbucks, and slap Highland Valley down right there.

That would be just fine. :D

Noody in particular. That came out of somewhere in between a rant and a daydream.

I definitely see some possibilities here... Unfortunately, I can't move mountains (yet), so I'm going to have to move myself...

My current goal is to get away from the whole damn urban sprawl of LA/OC and move to Oceanside... A short jaunt across 76 would take me right to Palomar :D

Of course, I'd be too far from GMR... But I could arrange rides there coinciding with times the wife wants to visit the in-laws, who live in Glendora, so that's not too bad... And visiting the in-laws would be much nicer that way :D

LOL. Highland Valley IS right around the corner from my house.

My Dad lives off of Wohlford in Valley Center.

And Angeles Crest and Bouquet are within walking distance from my Mom's house.

But the crap in-between definitely does suck.

I guess I'm still pretty lucky though.

So which direction on 243 is more fun? North or South?

It's a matter of personal preference, but I think that riding north to south is more fun. That way you ride the huge mountainside uphill rather than down, which I seem to enjoy more, but that's just me.

Hey guys, got a question.

I'm going to be in LA next week and am considering renting a bike. The thought is to leave LA and take the long way to San Diego, spend the night and then come back to LA. I have aboslutely NO idea what road or areas are good/bad - or if the real estate between the two cities is conducive to fun riding.

Simply put, I'd like some advice from those that know.

Thanks in advance.

You should probly take the 5 down to Ortega, hop on the 15 and head over to Palomar Mountain. From there you can head over to Julian and one of my favorite roads, Banner Grade. I'm a little sketchy on roads south of Julian, but I know you have lots of options.

If you're heading down on a weekend, I may be able to head down with you from LA.

I would suggest going to AAA and getting a CA map and a San Diego County map, those will have the detail you need to plan a trip. You could also look here http://www.pashnit.com/motoroads.htm

Well, then Oceanside is definitly your best bet in SD county, because Carlsbad(next city) is doing more expansion and construction than anywhere Ive seen in OC(cept for Irvine).
