rode it today. they finished the construction they were doing so now it is all patchy. Also when it starts to get real tight on the hideout side of it they just layed down a ton of tar snakes. Now I have never had a problem with tar snakes but today they were shiney and still gooey! I thougth my bike was on ice. I was doing about 15mph with both my feet down and my bike was still sliding front and rear! I almost lost her about 5 times. Scary stuff! This is no joke if you feel like you want new plastics or a new bike then by all means ride it, but for now stay away! far away!

P.S. Paul please do not merge this thread with the cold tires and tar snakes thread. I feel that this is important enough to have its own thread and does not need to be merged into an older thread. I need people to read this. Thank you.

Damn, that sucks! I've liked Mesa Grande the few times I've ridden it. Bastards!

Thanks for the warning.

PS. I think I'm pretty sensible when it comes to merging threads. ;)

Those tar snakes are poisonous. Stay clear of them at all costs. Sounds like one bit Gregg bad on Sunday.

Excuse the poor brazilian, but in when I read about what happened to Gregg on Palomar, I thought tar snakes were real snakes crossing the road... Now I'm starting to get confuse...

tar snakes are real snakes indigenous to the california region, predominantly in the southern desert region - ie crest, palomar, and now it seems they've migrated to mesa grande. contrary to popular beliefs, these snakes aren't poisonous but can be dangerous if there are many of them. they usually target bikers - mostly sport bikes rather than cruisers - although you hear from time to time of stories where these snakes would go for a cruiser. they're black and can vary in length.

See that black thing on the road. That's a tar snake and it tried to attack Jiggy and his buddy. It's a good thing they took that corner fast or else they would of been dinner.:p

I found it!!

The scientific name is "Virginia striatula", but well known as "Rough Earth Snake" (makes sense ugh?)....

here is the page
http://www.pitt.edu/~mcs2/herp/SoNA.html

and here is a picture of her:
http://www.pitt.edu/~mcs2/herp/snake.pics/V_striatula.jpg

Class: Reptila
Order: Squamata
Suborder: Serpentes
Family: Colubridae

Description:
COLUBRIDAE (colubrid snakes)
The Colubrid snakes are sometimes refered to as "fluid snakes". They comprise the largest family by far with over 2000 species worldwide. There are 102 species of Colubrid snakes found in North America. Some serpentes are classified as fluid because of the physics behavior of their bodies. When heated to a certain temperature, they become very slippery and selective about their preys, when they go after the fastest ones. Their hunting tactic comprises of lay down on back roads of southern california and wait for somebody to slip on their skin.

I think it matches calver's description, doesn't it?

There is still road construction going on on Mesa Grande!. I was on it 9/26/03 riding up from Hwy 79 side. Looks like they will be resurfacing the road soon.

Rode Mesa Grande 10/19/03. Tire snakes on Mesa Grande seem to have flattened out, so going up Mesa Grande from the lake side was much better.

Thanks for the update abkwanabe. I hadn't been on that road in a while now, so maybe i'll ride through it this weekend.
