View Full Version : Movie: Torque

Posted pics from the set (http://www.socalsvriders.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album13&op=modload&name=Photo_Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php), (mostly bike pics.) in the Gallery.
First I have to tell you being an extra on a movie is a mixed blessing.
Some back ground. About a week ago Monday, I got a call to ride out to Melrose from my ZX-12R riding buddy to audition for extra work in a movie called Torque. Rode out there fill out an app. got a Polaroid snapped, then took off for Malibu and the canyon roads there about. Got a call the next day to show up for a fitting at Warner Bros. Get call days later telling me where & when to show up.
What follows is the quick and dirty for anyone who's ever been interested in being an extra.
Tue. 8/13/02 1st day 5:15 am
[Can't believe how fast people drive in the early am hours in L.A. I was doing 90 mph and was getting passed by cages every couple of miles.]
Arrive at the set. Get waived onto the lot and park my bike with about 40 other bikes.
Head directly to catering truck. Must have coffee. This is 5 hours before I'm usually awake. Am amazed I made it. Didn't sleep through alarm even though I didn't go to bed until 11:30-Midnight. But feel like I should have a fishing pole in my hand.
About 5:30 am. The A.D. (Assistant Director) starts checking people in and handing out pay vouchers.
Get more coffee. Smoke.
Go move bike to new location on lot. Talk trash with other bikers. Its like Bike Night... if Bike Night continued until dawn.
Mixed bag of bikers, Biker chicks and and assorted other "Background".
Get told by another A.D. where to stay when not needed on set.
Take nap.
7:30 am
The sportbikers are a mixed bag. Mostly young. A few card carrying squids.
:squid:
The squidly contingent sits in a circle regaling the assemblage with tales of wheelies, stoppies and crashes. (It seems every wheelie and stoppie ends in a crash.) All they need now is a camp fire and marshmallows.
Harlybikers turn out to be mostly union (Screen Actors Guild) members and make a living as biker types in movies, tv and commercials. These guys talk shop. But since they tend to be more my age I find myself yakking with these guys with one ear on the squids.
Biker chicks/vendor chicks mostly look like air headed bimbos, but I find that they are friendly and intelligent... I just can't maintain eye contact, always looking down about 60 digress.
One Asian biker chick turns out to have about 5 bikes and race in the 80cc class. I'm such a f**kin poser in comparison. :geek: :clown:
Anyway this is how the rest of the day went:
 nap off and on.
Snack and then eat lunch.
The first day only 10 people out of the 50 some odd people they called were actually used on set.
Its a tough gig sleeping and eating for 13 hours but somebody's got to do it.
Pay for 8 hrs/$54 w/$150 paid for bringing a bike.
Minor excitement at the end of the day. The only want 20 guys out of the 40+ that are there to come with their bikes. Since you get more for the bike than you get paid for the day, this is a major issue.
We draw lots... 10 Harley and 10 sportbikes. I pull a lucky number and get to come back with my bike the next day at 6:00 am.
8/14/02 6:00 am.
Same deal as day before. Head straight for catering truck and coffee.
Today they are ready for us. We get to walk around a set that will match-up with a location shoot later in production.
Think vendor tents and booths at a bike show out of doors. If I'm in a shot, I assume I'll be an out of focus blur.
A few guys got to ride or push their bikes on and off camera. Mine wasn't picked, sigh, but I still got paid so :finger:
It was an interesting experience. I may get a call to work latter in the production, but don't know if I'd want to do this for a living. But I can get down with being paid to
 and eat. It just cuts into your riding time.
Last thing, met Joey DeBella the service manager at BAMM. Struck me as a real standup guy so I'll plug his shop.

:D , I like the intro where the "fast and furious" cars are racing and a sportbike wheelies past them.
The vid looks much better than BikerBoys (ie more bike shots).

I can't decide what's worse... The train scene (Michele Yeo did it without CGI... wimps), the supersonic bikes, or the fact that I'm not in the trailer... Bastids.

I thank GOD they cut me out of Biker Boyz, hope they do the same on Torque.
Wow...it's about time. It's always good to see something you worked hard on. Even if it'll probably suck. The hummer stunt was hella fun though..along with a lot of others. I'm seeing it, we should make a bike night of it.

Anyone notice the bad dubbing - they've got an I-4 sound coming from that Aprilia. Then again... I guess that's keeping with the unrealistic theme of the rest of the movie.

Just saw Gothika this weekend (Halle  ) and saw the trailer for Torque for the first time. Some of the stunts make Biker Boyz look like the most realistic flick ever.
As lame as some of it looks, I will have to see it. Better to have this, than no biker movies at all.

I think we should all mobilize and go see this as a big group. Maybe we can even start a rumble with some other sportbikers! Did you know that we can go fast enough on bikes to shatter glass? And absolutely nothing happens to our suspension if we catapault our bikes onto a moving train. :D

Ok, I didn't manage to shatter glass as I have a stock end can but I did set off some car alarms when I wheelied thru my parking garage.
I catapaulted the bike onto a moving train (I was fortunate enough to see one right by my side as I rode home) and she came out fine, the shock was absorbed brilliantly, I managed to herniate 4 discs in my lower back but the bike was fine!! :vic:

I was on the crew...dont remember anything being to bad. It's always hard to tell, all the acting is done in little pieces. Some movies I've been on I could've sworn the acting sucked, only to see it and find out they edited it around the bad acting. The reverse is true, saw what I thought was good acting only to see it on the screen and it sux....never can tell until it's up on the big screen, with all the elements
A not-very-insightful interview with the "Women of Torque":
http://romanticmovies.about.com/cs/torque/a/torquewomenint.htm
Sample:
Did any of you draw inspiration from characters in comic books?
JAIME PRESSLY: I can’t say that I necessarily did, but I can say that Joseph the director absolutely did.
CHRISTINA MILIAN: The director definitely did. I think we all have a little bit of action hero in us.
MONET MAZUR: A lot of the old school-like 80s “Romancing the Stone” - that kind of action comedy like, “I love you. I hate you. Shut-up,” sort of thing. We fused together a bunch of things from “Tomb Raider” to “Catwoman” to Gwen Stefani to Evel Knievel. There were a lot of “Star Wars” references to Martin Henderson’s character.

Interestingly enough most of the bikes in Torque are euro:

Do movies ever go staight to Kazaa? You know, like a straight to video type of release?
Hmmm...after seeing the trailer, I'm not sure it will be worth the bandwidth.
The title seems a little out of place too, Torque would seem better for a movie about semi's or tractors. Something like Redline would seem more approiate in connotating a motorcycle theme. Actually, I'm thinking Squid Heroes of the Universe would be most fitting.

Also KTMs play an un-credited role. Some of the stunt bikes are KTM Dukes with sport bike plastics.
But if they use any of the "Rally" footage, you'll see all kinds of bikes.

The movie truthfully sucked, in my opinion more than Biker Boyz. It starts out with an Aprilia, RC51, and a 954 going down the road, and tll three sound like inline 4's. Right then I knew it could only get worse. The movie doubly sucks cause some pogue ripped off my RC51 along with someone else's GSXR while were watching the movie.
I'm actually so disgusted by the image they give us bikers I'm writing a letter to the producer, and I think if you share the same opinion after seeing it you should do the same. It portrays us as a bunch of lawless rufians who drink and fight in the street. Oh, and the stunts are ludicris. I think after seeing this I'm goingn to do a movie on Knitting since I know as much about that, as they know about motorcycles and the people that ride them.
Another note, one of the characters looks and reminds me of Jorge. hehe

I just saw Torque this morning and liked it. I went into the movie not expecting to see an academy award wining film or acting, and wasn't let down. It's supposed to be a live action anime, so go see it with that mind set and you won't think it sucks.
I loved the opening sequence when the three guys are riding up that hill outside of Palm Springs. Jesse James has a cameo that made me laugh. I bet if there's a sequel then they might toss those two bone heads from American Chopper in it for a cameo too.
If we had a thumbs up smilie, I'd place it here:

Well...I haven't seen it, and probably won't (Sure it will be on DVD in less than 30 days), but when I do...I'll be open minded...Hell, I saw bikerboyz...and I still haven't run my bike down a dirt road at 180 MPH...so I'm sure Torque won't make me do anything stupid! I teach high school physics, and we covered torque (the actual thing, not the movie) not too long ago. My students have been all over me to see this movie because "it's called torque, man. It has a physics name and it has motorcycles in it". Tells you the standards kids have for movies. I might see it on video, but there's no way I'm paying to see it in a theater.

michelle, that's funny, i thought the girl bike scene was the WORST PART of the movie...otherwise i concure...great fun, although totally unrealistic
and i applaud jason for writing a letter to the producers, however, i'd be really depressed if the average non-biker watched that movie and thought that was actually how the majority of riders acted...it's VERY obviously hollywood

We went last night at 7:00 and there were probably 15-20 people in the theater! People are really missing out on this one!
I actually laughed outloud several times during the stunts.
I liked how the bikes changed from street bikes to street bikes with dirt bike suspensions (KTM from the looks of it).
It was almost as if the movie was a paridy of some of the other movies like the fast and the furious. don't know if it wsa intentional.
If you go make the theater give you three for one admission and have a couple of beers beforehand.

I went and saw Torque today with one of my bike riding friends. To be honest, I enjoyed most of the movie. The opening scene was great with the Aprilia doing a wheelie past two cars racing. The next part with the three bikes carving up the twisties was great as well.
The use of computer aided graphics kind of detracted from the movie, but that is a personal thing. I won't go into the lack of realism (which really turned my buddy off of the movie). I go to a movie to be entertained.
Then again, maybe my view is distorted because my SVS has been put up for months and I will take any bike fix I can get ... until spring comes.

you know he has a point. as much as i have been knocking on the idea of this movie, (which btw, i have not seen yet) you go to a movie to be entertained. if you want realism you watch a documentary.
i do still object to the fact that this movie is going to "inspire" a whole new generation of squid. it doenst bother me that they are going to hurt themselves. the truly stupid among us will find a way to do that no matter what they are into. but it does bother me that their hurting themselves is going to reflect upon me and tighten and already tight noose that the cops are all too eager to pull on.
not to mention the already outrageous insurance. for a vehicle as cheap as my bike, it should cost me half of what i pay. and i have it easy compared to you guys out there in california.
just my $0.02

Yup, if Michelle Yeoh can do it, I don't see why these guys needed CG to get them onto a moving train...
Oh, and I forgot to mention that I enjoyed the cameo in Shane's shop at the start of the movie (from the Piru set)... wasn't expecting that.

Those roads were very nice. Anyone have any idea where that was? My guess would be the palms to pines ride.

Yeah, I just saw Torque. The Filthy Critic (http://www.bigempire.com/filthy/torque.html) sums up my feelings pretty much exactly.
It's really too bad, cause it could have been a good movie. If only the people who made it weren't such lazy assmasters.

No, I meant the people who are responsible for producing it, not the people who do the work to make it. I'm sure that even the actors (despite their obvious mental impairments) were hoping the movie would be a hit. I think Poi even said earlier that you can't really know what the film will be like until the maker says it's done. He's the guy I'm talking about. The guy who rolls the dice on a hype gamble to post a profit on opening weekend. Mainly because he knows, without a doubt, that the film is on its way to El Cheapo Cinema 6 on the following friday. It's been out here for what, 3 days? And the local cinemas already have it down to all matinee showings..

what are you kidding me!! - that'd be so badass to be able to do flips, side kicks and shit like that and in video games
of course when I watch the Matrix I am saying the lines, kicking and karate- chopping in my living room so my diggin it isn't all that surprising

Well, some of the other gang I know have already seen the ill effects of the movie. The security at the mall this weekend pretty much staked them out, and when they were hanging out after the movie they were told to leave the premises. I'm sure there's more to the story than that, but still an interesting treatment.
I'll still stand by my statement of the movie sucking :-)
But hey, I've got a good reason for disliking that movie in addition to wasting the time watching it. hehe
(Maybe the security staking out the bikes for the next month will deter theft)
For the most part the story sucked...no surprise, but I still had fun. I think that if they did a movie about the real life of sportbikers, half the movie would be of a guy/girl at a computer chatting and posting, a quarter of them riding to work, an eighth of them riding the canyons, and an eight of them fixing/cleaning their bikes....not a big box office draw.
The other thing is, when I saw the story board of how they wanted the scenes to be, I thought that it wouldn't translate to screen well. The girl fight and the train scene actually were realized very well (realistic or not) It was very comic book in the storyboards, and came out that way on the screen.
just a interesting story...remember the explosion at the end? well, when we did it they made the charge to big, and blew out the bottom floor windows of buildings up to a block away...expensive day.
I also have no part in the whole producing, writing aspect so I take no offense to any bad comments...I just work on it. As long as people watch movies I'll still find work (crap or not):D

That's why I won't work on a set with pyro. Was out in Acton and the Pyro guy and the Stunt guy started out the day in a pissing match. Went down hill from there. :-(
Pots of gas & blasting caps kept going off at random too.
Have yet to see the film, did any of the night shots w/gratuitous fire works make it into the picture?

Two files totaling about 300 megs. If anyone wants it, check kazaa... that's where I found it.
I figure I'll probably buy the DVD at some point anyway... because I'm a consumer whore.

I'm actually proud to admit that I have yet to see Biker Boyz or Torque. Can someone give me an incentive to see them, or should I continue my streak of not watching stereotypical gangster biker flicks? :D

That's exactly how I feel about work too. People feel bad about making fun of TV shows when they find out that I worked on them, but hey, they all pay about the same. I was on an episode of a Disney Channel show the other day called That's So Raven. Worst show ever. i swear, they must have been reusing old Family Matters scripts with the names changed. The craft service was spectacular though, and really, that makes it all worth it.

If you don't see either movie you will be ahead of the game.
I rented Boyz.........Too lame for words
Torque was given to me as a gift. Same comment as above.
The interesting thing was that in both movies the badasses of the biker cult were the chopper riders........
I ordered Faster. Can't wait to get it. I have a feeling I will watch it more times than On Any Sunday.

ok u guys tell me but didn't the first half seem cool and the second half just blow.
cg stunts or just badly done effects like the flipping hummer which miraculasly fall ontop of the porshe from straight above.
i did like the begining where he passes the cars and spins the street sign and it reads "cars suck" and jesse james cameo
also in the begining everyone always had helmets. it was like two different people directed it. who is the moron that thinks you can actually ride these bikes thru sand?
o well at least half of it was good.
o and i like the joke about biker boys "i live my life a quarter mile at a time." that was funny. overall rateing just above poo
I really like the opening sequence, where they are rippin' through the twisties to Janes Addiction.
The rest of it was bad... Better than Biker Boyz by a mile. BB sucked :ass: .
BTW, that last saying if from the Fast and the Furious...:D

During my latest "I'm too lazy to reach for the remote control so I'll just watch whatever comes on next" moment, Torque was the feature presentation. I figured, "Hey I ride. I love motorcycles. I'm a race fan. Maybe I'll just leave it on. How bad can it be?"
I actually thought things couldn't get more stupid than when the lead guy did a twirling stoppie and launched himself in another direction with a back kick off of a palm tree (in a dirt grove). I was wrong.
That was followed by not one, but two riders being able to launch themselves off of a ramp onto the top of a moving train, then stop themselves on top of the moving train. Let's see, main character guy then somehow turns his bike 90 degrees and drops between two of the train cars, then rides inside the cars while Ice Cube rides on top of the cars chasing him (jumping the gaps between cars without ramps, nonetheless).
The girl fight on motorcycles...
How to be a really weird looking dude and pick up on Christina Milian:
...Weird looking dude - "Nice bike."
...Christina Milian - "Nice ass."
...Weird looking dude - "You gotta name?"
...Christina Milian - "Yeah. (sexy smile goes here)"
Oh man, :tired: just another bad movie to add to the list. I love cable TV.

u forgot to add the 200mph crash at the end where the bikes blow up, launching the main character to the ground without a helmet and getting up with only dirt on his face

i finally rented it and i liked it. yes it was stupid but it was way better then biker boys which i rented two days before. i thouhgt it was cool that it wasnt just a bunch of chromed up sportbike drag racing. they actually went in the canyons and got their knees down(yes they crossed the double yellow but come on its a movie) and there was a plot. i also like that the main character was on a Mille and not a hayabusa or r1. in fact they had a very wide veriety of bikes which i really liked, everything from a triumph TT to the Y2K bike. over all i thought it was stupid but good.
it seems like most of you guys were trying too hard to analize every little thing that happened and not just enjoy the movie, of course its gonna suck if you watch a movie like that. just my 2 cents though.

I don't think that people are analizing the movie too much it is just that the movie was way over the top with the only decent part being the first five minutes when the three guys are carving the canyon. The rest was so stupid and unreal that it made the movie bad and made moto people look ridiculous if anyone from the general public watched. The only good motorcycle movie out lately is the Worlds Fastest Indian.
