Hey,

Two quick questions for you guys, as I'm gonna get a new bike in a couple weeks.

1) Is there any reason I'd want a Calif. model SV over a 49 state? I saw a decent deal on a bike in AZ (it'd be a long haul to go get it), since it's got over 7500 miles, I don't think there'd be a problem with registering it..and I guess not having the PAIR system would reduce complexity, probably run a little less lean when stock?

2) naked SV's on the highway..does the wind get rough at 80+ ? I went riding last weekend with two cousins (F3 and RC51) and I'm on my old GS500. The wind would push me around quite a bit, and my bike was running like a dog, so I couldn't really keep up with them over 80-85 on the highway. I assume that the SV's got plenty of power to 100+ , how does it fair on the freeway, without a flyscreen? Is it worth it shell out the extra $500+ that SVS's seem to command on the used market, over a naked bike?

Thanks,
Phil

1) Yep, you're right. CA models are a bit more restrictive. I'd get a 49-state model or even a Canadian one if I could do it over again.

2) The fairing, lights, instrument, clip-ons, further back pegs is worth the $500 "upgrade" from the naked SV IMHO, though adds a bit of weight. It all depends on your taste of course (sporty vs. standard). The stock SVS is also geared slightly different to allow for a little more top end. I haven't ridden a nekked SV on the freeway so I can't comment on how much better the SVS is in terms of wind protection.

I have a nekked SV and had to put a small windshield on it to keep the wind blowing me off my bike. It cost about $70.

The SVS is the more popular version of the bike because more people want the sportier version, I guess. It's all about taste. It seems like most people who get a nekked SV put Suburban Machinery handlebars on them to lower their riding position (which I did) and those work great.

So if you get the nekked SV you'll probably want to put a little money into it to make it more freeway friendly. I've spent 200 dollars to make mine better for the freeway, so that's still 300 less than what the SVS riders have spent.

You should be fine punching through the wind on a nekkid SV.

Besides if you are going to ride it back from AZ you'll want all the wind blowing on you that's available.

I rode to Tuscon last Sept. on a ZX-11 the wind didn't get bad untill you hit 135 :D But it was hot... dawg

Whats the difference between a regular SV and a 49 state model sv? Is the 49 state illegal in a state?

The People's Republic of California...AKA the smog nazis, dictate that every vehicle (every model after 1970 I believe) should have smoq equipment.

The rest of the other states (the other 49) do not require such equipment. This is why California bikes are a little heavier.

Because of CAM and FI differences, the 49 state bike or vehicle will be up in horsepower or two...but some bike manufacturers (like Suzuki) claim that the CA bike outputs the same amount of horsepower.

Either way, one of the most popular modifications to motor vehicles in this state is to remove the smog equipment and to install a more radical camshaft and or FI or etc...

Yes, such modifications (and in turn, the bike) will be illegal in the eyes of the law. Of course, they have to see the modifications in order to deem them illegal. :D

70 pounds of smog equipment on your vehicle, none of my firearms are legal, outragous real estate prices, celebrities, ...Argh.... just seems frustrating.

Don't forget traffic, all the smog that equipment is supposed to deal with, and taxes...

But I still would rather live here than in the midwest. I grew up in the midwest. I love snow... But I don't particularly like shoveling snow. Or 5 degree below zero temps, with a 20 below windchill. Or the oppressively hot, humid, mosquito ridden, west nile virus summers...

There are a bunch of things I'm going to change in CA when I take over, but on balance, there are so many good things here that I'm not going back to the flatlands...

Celebs? Ah you only really see them if you look hard enough...sure, one of my best friends had Teri Nunn as a babysitter and met Madonna, but hey, who cares about celebs..oh and I saw Geena Davis in Dupar's...she was one table away..I was like, 'Dude, she looks like Geena Davis but a bit more punk' and of course, it WAS her! ;) My girlfriend works with the Fonz and sure, maybe I did run into Bob Eubanks...and Marion Ross from Happy Days commented on my yellow car once...but hey...celebs are just people..just more well-known.

So anyhoo...Ca rocks...surfing, snowboarding in the same day if you want..great roads..usually dry (what good is a twisty road covered in snow or salt?). Great tech industry, if that's what you do..fairly healthy economy and yes, the real estate sucks but that's coz everyone wants to be here...gotta live in the burbs...the problem is, if I moved to Iowa, I could buy a house for cheap, but then where would I work? That'll only be possible when more businesses are cool with having lots of remote employees. :D

Ca has its problems, but the good far outweighs the bad, IMHO.

I prefer the look of the standard to the S model.

I think the standard looks better balanced. The big fairing looks silly on the slim and relativly small body of the bike.

If you are going to be riding on the highway you will want to add a fly screen. Above 80 it does get windy but you get used to it. When I first started riding I thought it was really windy going 60. Now I can do 100 into a head wind with a little bit of head shake.

Is there a 49 state sv650 and a CA sv650 or is the bike 50 state smog legal? I ask this because I am going up to Seattle to visit my parents and if I can find a good deal up there I might buy.

yes, there is a 49 state and a CA one.. You can do a search and find out the few differences because I don't remember them off the top of my head. There is the normal evap stuff and like a smaller gas tank on the CA version.. Hope this helps.

I have done a google search and haven't been able to find any more specific info. If anyone has a link or specs I would greatly appreciate it.

That was kind of a cute post by Lowbee........... a 49state and a ca.(only) sv......... You can't sell a 49state here but feel free to move around the rest of the u.s. as for the ca. bike: Forget It! You can only sell it here,(that's true really, who wants all the xtra smog stuff.........) it's not allowed outside of california!
:D
So does anybody read the threads from the begining or am I just some weirdo who likes some continuity?

Thanks for merging my thread, I feel like a real n00b for not searching before posting. And I think I may just buy in Seattle and register it at my parents address.:D

Hi,

Does anyone know the difference between the California and 49 state gas tanks. I recently bought a used sv with a dented tank and was going to change it out, but I heard there are differences between California bikes and bikes everywhere else. Can I use a 49 state tank on a california bike?

Thanks,

Cal

From what I understand the CA tanks hold a bit less fuel and have a charcoal filter fitted onto it...

I'm not sure how you'd ever get busted using a 49-state tank - but don't quote me :D

There is an extra tube that connects to the CA tank... easily plugged with a bolt... if you put on a 49 state tank. The capacity difference is along the lines of .01 gallons, if that.

I *may* have made this switch without any adverse consequences.

My question is this: Cars have to get smogged every other year, do our bikes have to be checked out ever? If so, I'm holding on to the dented tank and swapping it out as needed, but that is a pain in the :ass:.

There currently is no testing procedure for motorcycles or diesel vehicles. There are also no plans (as far as I know right this second) to implement any such testing procedures.

Jarasco...

So where does the extra tube go to? Have you had any problems not running the tube?

Cal

Jarasco
Fri 12/12/03, 2:30PM
The extra tube goes into a canister under the seat... normally it collects the gas vapor in the tank, then when you start up the engine I shoots it into the engine to be burned. This keeps the vapor from going straight into the atmosphere, but does no benefit to the bike.

I still have the tube in place near where it would hook up to the tank, but I just have a bolt stuck in it so it doesn't suck in air. I have had no problems at all with it, and my gas mileage is on par with what I had before my accident...

It's does nothing for performance, but it makes buying a replacement tank on ebay possible. ;)

Coolio...Thanks for the info jarasco! I just bought the tank on ebay...look forward to installing it!

I've got a 49-state and love it, I don't know the differences really, but I know that after 7500 miles they are legal to register in Ca, mine spent the first 7500 miles registered in arizona, I've got the 650s and it has a double bubble windshield, if I'm on the freeway I just tuck in and the wind really isn't that bit an issue, ear plugs are nice though

Hello everyone. This is my first posting on this forum. I thought that I'd join up as I own a "California spec." SV650K3. I'm in New Zealand and how this happened is that Suzuki NZ got hold of a whole lot of SV's that were over produced for the market over your way and were flicking them off cheap here. Well I got one and am very happy with it.

The reason that I'm posting is that I'm wanting to know what the difference is with the California model. I assume that it's to do with emissions and stuff. I'm also told that the extra side reflectors that mine has is part of the difference also.

Can anybody help me out. If you can, thanks in advance...

Cheers :)

Don't know about the reflectors but everything else s going to be the emissions. Don't know the specific differences but I don't think it's as extreme as some bikes which were down on hp for the CA model.
