Looks like it's time to get a sticker for the car as well, plus make a donation. I'll be more than happy to contribute, since I've gleaned so much great information from this site (and become part of a really close-knit community of riders as well)

Just click on the 'merchandise' link at the top of the page - that'll take you to the sticker store which also has a pulldown menu to select a donation amount. Got me a white sticker for the cage's rear window and dropped $10 to help keep things running smoothly.

If you say I HAVE to ride, then I guess I gotta do it.
Too bad the bike's potential speed doesn't necessarily equate to MY speed.
Maybe I should put a sticker on my rear end.
If it helps, can I change my handle to fastpoke?:)
The good thing about the sticker is that it boosts power at all parts of the powerband, both low end torque, and top end hp. Just get on the bike and ride, and just leaving the driveway you'll feel the extra boost.
And besides, cute chicks like stickers.

the t-shirt prices shouldn't be considered a donation...they basically pay for themselves
if you want to support the site so it stays around, you should contribute something strictly for website support

For some reason I'd feel better about donating the profits of a $15.00 T-shirt than giving the site $5.00 and buying a $10 T-shirt, or somethin like that. I guess its just a weird psychological instant gratification thing about getting something tangible out of a purchase or something. I figure the T-shirts would be a great way to skim donations and let everybody forget that they gave-away a few extra bucks nonetheless, even if its just a couple bucks.

Why not charge? If everyone had to kick in $3 for an annual membership, that'd be over $6,000 with the amount of members there are currently. That'd go a long way to maintain the server and the extra $$ could be put into providing food/drink at the gathering or other group events.
Just a thought :)
Jarasco
Thu 11/13/03, 7:38PM
we'd have quite a few less members if they actually had to pay to get in... after all, we can't even get them to post to get it..
GsxrGregor
Thu 11/13/03, 7:42PM
That's true, but it would help the $$ issue and might promote more forum participation from the members. All I'm saying is that $3 is chump change for the amount of info obtainable at this site - and it saves you even more money when you apply what you learn here and do the work yourself on your SV, rather than lining a mechanic's pockets.

Then again, the site has run great today and I have heard some people speculate that it's not a hardware problem but could be just a code problem.
When it comes to computers I don't know my elbow from my asshole. But if we could solve this cheaply we could put that money toward something else . . . . . .like sponsoring me.:D

Paul,
I have a couple of old machines that I'm going to be cleaning off by Christmas. One is a 1.3 GHz Athalon and the other is a practically new Athalon 2000 XP (or whatever the hell they called it to imply that it was as fast as a 2 GHz Pentium but with a lower clock speed)...
Anyhow, I'm replacing these with a Mac G4 as soon as I find one...
Can you use any admin support or tech support? I have lots of Linux experience and am coming us to speed with Darwin/BSD. However my experience is mostly non-web specific...
Later,
Tim.

Guys, thanks so much for all the donations. Assuming our new t-shirts sell, we'll have enough money to cover a new system upgrade. Although our current 2 yr-old system (AMD XP1700) seems ok, it won't be powerful enough for the future. Our new server (P4 2.8-HT) should be in place within the next week.
I have been using Linux for over 10 years, *BSD for 2 years, Solaris for 6 years. I've worked at an Internet Service Provider for a while before my graduate studies. There's also 2 other experienced people who watch over this box as well.
If anyone feels like tweaking the code (PHP/MySQL) for some parts of this site, I (and the sourceforge project developers) could use your help. Contact us (http://www.socalsvriders.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Feedback&file=index) for more specifics.

I hear it's super cheap to do and a place like MBE will do mail forwarding too (auto or per your call)
so we (Paul) could just call them and find out if anything is in the box, if there is have 'em forward it if you can't make a trip

No it wasn't, but I'll throw in my 2 cents. I'm still not on board with buying a whole new server. I think this could have been fixed with some better debugging, recoding, and maybe a little more ram. I also wish that we could have the option to open and close the chatter box on the front page because that would help it load a lot faster.
