View Full Version : What Rubber do you Run?

Kurt'sSV
Wed 10/8/03, 7:14AM
We've talked long and hard about tires on this board and have more than one thread dedicated to the subject, but we've never had a poll on the subject.

So, boys and girls, here is the quesiton I post: What kind of tires do you run on your bike? I think this poll will answer a lot of future questions before they even get asked.

Durex. ultra thin ;)

currently on the SV, it's an H2 front and a 207ZR rear. not by choice, just what i had available at the time.

will be swapping to some race rubber when the season starts.

on my TL. supercorsas SC1 front, SC2 w/ a 190/55 rear.

Yup. They're too expensive for me to ever want to buy them. I guess they're supposed to be better than the M1's once they're warmed up, but if I'm going to step up my tire I'll move up to SuperCorsas.

SVelocity

Yeah they were really expensive...I kinda got up sold when I went to cyclegear. I went in wanting the BT Combo but the guy convinced me otherwise. He called the BT''s "tombstones". Whatever...I was a knucklehead.

Well I won't buy them again, only due to cost, but they are REALLY great tires. First time I took them out for a good spin in the canyons...holy cow! It was entirely different experience. Planted, controlled, grippy...and honestly, I'm not as good as these tires are.

BTW, I have 3K on these tires and the wear has been really minimal.

BTW (again), DiscountMotorcycleTire.com (http://www.discountmotorcycletire.com/) is having a big sale right now. I've bought tires through them (and had cycle gear put them on) and I thought their service was great.

Yeah, I just got a set of M1's for $192+shipping... Cycle Gear's current prices put them at $250 for the set plus tax... Now I just gotta get them put on (Cycle Gear quoted $21/wheel, and Mach One in Costa Mesa quoted $15/wheel)...

I find these polls interesting...mainly cuz there are over 1800 users on this board and we have only 118 votes...hmmm?

It's not like we are talking politics  we are talking tires...

Why do you think we have such few votes?

bwarbiany
Fri 10/17/03, 3:35PM
I think we might want to ask these people with "Other", what tires are they running, and are they happy with them?

Kurt'sSV
Fri 10/17/03, 3:48PM
KevinBigTwin, Dominator and Juicy Fruits are 3 people running "other" tires. Kevin has race tires on his bike (basically cut slicks). Dominator just got a set of SuperCorsas and said he liked them. I have a SuperCorsa front on my bike and like its ultra stickiness, but I can tell it's wearing fast. And since Juicy Fruits doesn't own a motorcycle, she must be referring to her car tires (which are probably Firestone tires).

I am just lazy, those MeZ4s are about to go away.

I am going to try bagel's Pirelli tires if he can get them in SV sizes, if not it's M1s for me.

Yeah, but how many of them are active members (in the sense that they've posted before), and of those, how many are regular visitors to the site... ?

I haven't voted 'cause I'm running stockers but not by choice.

Same here. I'm waiting to make a choice before voting.

I don't ride fast enough to hit the edges of the stockers (or feel them slide) anyway (D220s BTW).

Dominator just got a set of SuperCorsas and said he liked them. FWIW, supercorsas are also considered "cut slicks" same goes for just about all the DOT race tires. though the dunlop GP's have the most tread and would probably be the best wet weather "race" tire.

i'm going to be using some slicks later at sears on the SV. should be good.

Pirelli diablo corsa up front and diablo in the back and I love them. They are stickier then bt010 and wear longer than the M1s.

Well, I am running stockers, cuz I haven't bought replacements yet, (Well I just picked up an unused M-1 rear from a friend.) I voted anyway, to reflect that I am driving on MeZ4. All the Evac Commuting from the fire finally did in the rear, there's no tread left. I got 6k out of it. I did maybe 10 or 15 burn-outs and I can't even remember how many times I locked up the rear from either goofing off or downshifting too aggressively. So I guess when you factor in the squidliness I did ok getting 6k out of them. But it seems like other people get a lot more. I won't miss them.

I was going to try some of those take-offs from bagel, but I couldn't pass up a chance to get the M-1 rear for a hundy spot.

Pirelli Diablo Corsa in the front and back.. I used to run Metzeler Rennsports, but they wore out too fast.. Loved the grip, though!! Those were some sticky tires!!! Thinking about trying the Supercorsas on a trackday if I ever get some time off!!!

Any race takeoffs in the 160 range on the rear will do. Right now, I've got a Bridgestone/Michelin combo on there. Any race tire will be plenty sticky enuf for the street, I just watch the wear and pressures very, very carefully.

It's all about price. I can get race takeoffs pretty cheep. I actually took my new SV home and pulled the stock tires off with nine miles on them and sold them as a set to someone for $110. Hey, they're great commuter tires, but they're not for Angeles Crest.

Other..... BT014's.
They were on my bike when I bought it and have lots of wear left
Seem to grip fine... I don't ride very aggressively though.
They're kinda soft,sporty-ish but older tires right?
Anyway, I like 'em.

When I had these, they never did anything wrong, but they lacked that little bit of confidence when I started going faster. They were fine for the street or a casual track day. The BMWF800 I rode at Fontana had them, and they worked fine on that bike at that pace.

I just did my first track day on street tires in a long time, and the difference between street rubber and Bubble-Yum-soft, gooey Dunlop slicks never ceases to amaze me ...

I picked up a 14 rear and was running it at ojai today, It's got about a 1/4 inch chickenstrip and never seemed to slip, Seemed like a pretty sticky tire even when I pushed it hard.

160/60/17 rear and the front depending on who you ask 120/60,65,70/17 front.

APE Dustin
Wed 6/4/08, 11:39AM
Has anybody tried running a 170/60/17 in the rear? Also why would you want to switch to a taller front tire? Wouldn't that throw off the odometer and speed that it reads?

john_c
Wed 6/4/08, 12:39PM
there is no need for a 170 tire with this bike, it will throw off the handling, just accept that fact that this bike has a 160 series tire and live with it. Besides the 160 vs. the 170 has a quicker turn in, there is no real gain by going larger. My FIRST time in the canyons I was keeping up with the guys that were riding the ss 600's and the rear never gave me a reason to let off. Its an sv, accept it for what it is.

As far as the 70 series front I believe ( feel free to correct me vets) it allows for better turn in/tracking in the turns. As far as the odo/speedo being off I really can't see it being enough to really matter.

Ok I was just curious on the rear. I didn't think it would make that much of a difference on the speedo. I might just have to try out a 70 series front. Thanks for the info.

I have a battlax 14 rear and it seems pretty decent. Got about 500 miles on it and still looks brand new and thats with a canyon run. Take it easy for the first few miles until they get some heat otherwise you can feel that its abit slick after that ur good to go.

i was suprised to see them on there because a buddy of mine's Gixxer 600 had them when he picked his bike up. he totally hated them, but hes into track more than i am so i could see why.

No problem, alot of people i ride with either prefer the battlax 14s or the PPs. I got about 2k on my battlax now and its starting to show alittle wear, I'm thinking around 5-6k out of it. I think my next tires will be a pilot road 2ct for the rear to save on flat spotting for commuting. Heard the roads are still plenty sticky enough for the canyons and you'll get a good 8-10k out of it, and a pilot power 2ct for the front. To each his own I guess I am not a tire "loyalist" so I'll try anything once. I know a guy that has a gsxr 1k and he swears by the battlax 14s.

Let update this tire thread a bit..
The conti's are taking the world by storm. Try em when you get a chance. Sticky long lasting and smooth.

cheap tires and mounting see me.

Currently on my sv is the 014. Great tire, about 6 K out of em normally.

On the Sv go with a 70 in the front..and raise your forks in the triples. 170 in the rear will work, but seems to make the tire to tall and skinny, which seems to cause a more slipping in back during engine breaking. Stay 160 rear.

oh, tires. i know nothing about motorcycle tires, i'm a n00b. but i've done a lot of bicycling, and michelin's are pretty much the best ones of all the ones i've tried.

so, i will go for michelins when its time for me to get new tires

I disagree with the handling aspect. When the tire is fitted on a wider F3 rim, the 170's profile is perfect and I like the way it works for me, along with a 70 front. To each his own, I guess.

I am running the BT 016 tri compound on the rear. You can feel the transcition when in corners from the medium to the soft on the sides, it almost feels like the rear is sliding out? Maytbe its just me and the way I ride? But I never felt this with my michelin tire.
Is it normal for the front tire to wear on the left side? I heard its because of the roads are sloped to the right?

Anyone actually using the D220s? It seems like the first thing people do when they buy an SV is replace the tires with something 'better'. Are the stock tires really that bad?

in my humble opinion, yes they are. but that could have been the tires on my bike when i got it were two to three years old and they bike had been sitting for a year and a half. i replaced them with michelin pilot roads and the bike handled much better. i just now installed continental sport attacks and will let you know how they perform after i scrub them in.

i ran the stock d220 for about 2500 miles, after which i had a slip on a slow-speed corner at "in-town" speed. a week later i bought some metzler m3 and haven't regretted it a bit. i mostly just use them for commuting but they are fun to push a little hard on weekend rides up highway 33. i've got about 4000 miles on them and it looks like i can expect to get at least another 2000.

I am running continetal sport attacks.

good profile heats well last qwite a long time. and you can get you knee down qwit well with them.
I have had them for about 3000 miles on mostly flat roads with no pucking, and very little wear.

overall cost for them was about $220 us.
so I will be putting them om my 650 when the PP's where out.
