I figured I'd be the one to add our first "tech" thread (since I'm the horsepower whore).

Anybody know anything about 'pod' filters? Supposedly you remove the airbox & associated smog stuff and stick these little high-flolw filters on.

G'head and say it............

Nate,
Check the Factory Pro Tuning web site (I think it's www.factorypro.com), and I think the filters are made by BMC. I know a guy up north who has them, but he got the carbs from someone down here, who I think was putting totally different carbs on the bike... I can ask him about these though. What I do know is that with the pods, and a Yosh exhaust, he ended up running 205 mains and like 20 pilot jets, due to the air volume coming in... I don't know enough about how they change the bike to really say much though...

Those so-called "pods" are actually alien spores...meant to breed an alien army for an invasion of planet earth. Save yourself man! Don't do it!!

Soylent green is made from people!!!

In order to do that you must add tank spacers for clearance purposes. Personally I wouldn't bother with the hassle. You would find that when trying to hold a steady cruise air hitting the filters would make a constant accelerating/decelerating effect, because of the nature of CV carbs. But if you want to, go for it.

Check this article out & you'll see why.

Okay, so maybe pods aren't all their cracked up to be :)

Anyway, anyone know specifically how the airflow from a K&N filter compares to a stock desnorkeled filter?

Is there anything I can do to get rid of my stock air box and still have air filters? Would this be better for performance? I am planning to dyno tune my bike soon, so I want to do everything at once!

Yeah, get some pod filters... Made through either K&N or BMC, I think. Talk to Factory Pro Tuning if you want a kit. You'll need some tank spacers to slightly raise the tank for clearance, and you need to run some HUGE jets, but I've heard from the people who have it that it's pretty good...

Although I've also heard from people that it's maybe a 1% increase in power over a K&N or Desnorkled filter and pipe...

Can I go to any motorcycle shop and ask for pod filters? I have already got a stage 2 jet kit and a BMC air filter. Will the pods work with that?

This is one of those things you probably need to order. And there will definitely be some serious carb work. I think the guys I know who run this run about 205 mains, which are pretty huge...

I've seen two airkits for the 03, the renegade kit (http://www.renegade-products.com/renegadeusa/messages/17/993.html?1038792675) and another one i forget. If anyone has one can you please tell me where you got it and how much you paid for it. Also did it make a difference when you installed it.

Sounds like a gimmix to me. Who the hell puts a website up...with dyno run test results...selling a product...but has absolutely NO PICTURES to go with it:confused:

It's probably nothing more than a K&N with some tank spacers.

The Renegade kit replaces the airbox with two pod-type filters.

It's another 2 or 3 horsepower.

After a pipe and a jet-job, there's not much -cheap- horsepower out there.

Best bet would be to lighten the bike and improve the handling.
