I was able to download the Suzuki rebate certificate yesterday fine, now today I try to download a service manual and it says I'm not a registered member. Since I am posting here I obviously am registered. Any ideas?
Since this is your first and only post, I wouldn't say you're a "member" even though you have registered, would you?
And please don't sign up for multiple accounts.

Guess that depends on your definition of member. I've been lurking here for months, but never registered or posted since this was a socal site and I'm in MN. Plus I'm a clueless noob so I wouldn't have much usefull input to add to any threads. I've just been reading as much as I could, and have learned a bunch.
But if you need to constantly post, and attend ride outs then nope I'm not a member. Even if a lurker stuck in the frozen turndra of the midwest can't be a "member" how about thowing him a bone anyway?
BTW...if anyone here visits svrider.com you may recognize me from over there...I post as HKer...
We'll have to think about this some more. My first instict is, hey, throw some bones here too, but it might not be such a cool idea. Everything should be gotten for free, right?
Members here have pitched in to purchase our own copy of the manuals. Countless hours have been spent to digitize it and OCR'd.

I would definately we willing to give some $ if I knew it would get me something like access to the downloads. I didn't know that there were even pay memberships available here, I didn't know how the site supported itself since there aren't any (or very few) banner ads.
So if I give $ what do I get access to? How long does it take?
I believe you have access to the Downloads already ;) We don't have pay memberships, but we do appreciate any donations if you feel this site is of any value. Let me know if it still doesn't work for you.

i'm in no hurry, but would be nice to look through some stuff. i've been studying anything and everything to learn more about the bike. only had it for 4 months or so.
to those that donated 67 cents. i feel it's an insult to this site and those who have donated a decent amount of funds to this site to help keep it going. it's not just for the people in southern cali, but everyone welcomes all those that seek information and care to share their experiences. i've just been lurking for the most part and haven't posted much, but this site has helped me a great deal.
just recently was my first donation, but it won't be the last either. i've learned a lot and want to keep learning so i'll gladly do what i can to help keep this site up and running.

Hmm... I wonder if the fact that you've been 'stuck' on 5 posts for your last three postings may have had something to do with being denied access to the DL section. I hope Paul's not up too late checking this stuff out.
Hopefully this worm that's been causing havoc with people's computers (like my dad's) hasn't gotten into the server that this site is on. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=568&ncid=578&e=3&u=/nm/20030812/bs_nm/tech_windows_worm_dc

OK people... this is really, really old now... Here's the word on downloading... Post! Post something! Say "hi" in the in the say hi thread... We don't care, just post something; anything other than "why can't I download".
The next person who asks "why can't I download" gets a severed horse head under their sheets...

I've replied and added on other posts so this was not my first. Why have these boards if you can't ask questions of it's members to learn more? Some people here are not very friendly, not everybody is a "seasoned pro" like yourself, maybe. This should be a place where we can learn new things. I asked a simple question yet you got a beef about it..."post something" well I did seasoned one...same problem. You look at some replies and they are having the same problem...maybe now you have a smarter answer?

Don't mind G_E, he seems like a nice guy once you chat with him, meet him, and crash with him (how's the healing G_E?)
The problem that he is writing about is that we see the same message a few times a week. If you notice, yours has been merged with some of the others.
We have a sleepless host who, it would seem, has to make members truly active on an individual basis (at his discretion) so new members have to be patient until he can get around to doing it.
But pay no attentionto me, I'm by no means a seasoned pro... I'm marinated :D
Stick around and enjoy the board...

If you've posted and you still can't download, then PM linp; he'll sort you out.
FYI, website issues go in the website issues forum, not in General Discussion. And before you post, you should use the search link (http://www.socalsvriders.com/forums/search.php?s=). If you had, you would have noticed that there was already a thread on the subject, and I wouldn't have had to merge you.
7 people creating new threads to ask the same question in less than two weeks is a bit excessive, don't you think?
I didn't have any real problem with you until you started in on that "seasoned pro" crap... but it was the "smarter answer" bit that really ticked me off. You'll notice that my godfather warning was for the next person to post; I wasn't suggesting that anyone should take issue with you and I didn't mean to put you on the defensive.
The letter people get when they register does need some clarification about what constitutes an "active member" and how to get access to downloads. And I think the moderators need to get some clarification on that as well as how to mark people as active (if it doesn't happen automagically based on posts)...
But the swarm of "I can't download" posts lately is excessive and displays poor netiquette. New users in any community are expected to lurk until they get a feel for the customs of that community, and around here one of the commandments is to use search (http://www.socalsvriders.com/forums/search.php?s=). Also, the welcome letter says this:
"If you are still having problems signing up please contact a member of our support staff at webmaster@socalsvriders.com"
Didn't that strike you as relevant?

Take a look at the number of posts by those people... For most of them, this was their first post.
This was your fourth post, so if you tried to download during that 9 minutes, then there may be an actual issue. That's why I merged you to a relevant thread and then addressed the site in general, rather than replying to your post.
I have been under the impression (and I don't think I'm alone here) that the downloads would trigger based on a 'select count(*) from ... where userid=...' result of greater than 1.... Either that or paul is activating all users by hand and hasn't been around... (Paul, I sure hope you aren't activating everyone by hand)
Now, users who activate by donating will be marked active by hand as soon as Paul gets notice of the payment, so for that you'll just have to be patient.
In any case, if you PM'd linp, that'd get you a faster response than complaining to everyone in the general forum.

I'm in physical therapy now. They've got me doing all sorts of things that you'd think should be simple (if you hadn't had your foot immobile or otherwise incapacitated for the last month and a half, anyway).
But the healing is going good... Its just my bank account that's hurting... Airlift and hospital bills just arrived.
The hospital said that if I didn't have medical insurance, they might have written off my bill, since I'm unemployed and can't pay... But since they got some bucks from my insurance company (and so wouldn't have to write off the entire bill) I don't qualify...

And restricting downloads to active users really is an issue, if you saw how much data this site moves a month (http://www.socalsvriders.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=54716#post54716). We used to be open to anyone, but its just too much, and the site has felt the strain.
Not to mention the fact that the server has two dying hard disks that have been causing some issues, and donations are the only way to pay for new ones.
Oh wow.. good job GE! You said it much better than I could ever have.

I picked up a 2001 SV650S today that was involved in a slowspeed laydown. The Fairing was smashed and cut the wires to the Starter Switch in the bars. The previous owner tried to repair the wires but the starter wont activate with a switch.
So my problem is that when I tried to download a manual from this site to chase the wires it wouldnt allow me because it said I had to be a member. When I tried to sign up as a member it said that I was already a member.
SO what do I need to do?

I'm a newbie here but have seen this question going on a dozen times. Either keep posting, donate some cash, or both and the downloads will come. I think I earned mine somewhere just north of post #5.
Wondering out loud if it would be useful to define "active member" in the same message that tells you you're not an active member when someone tries to download?

I had wondered about that myself, but we've had people who created accounts and posted a number of "test" messages in various forums just to get access to the downloads... I wouldn't want to encourage that by giving them a target number...
We really want people to participate, not just post enough to get access to the downloads.
So even if you register, you still need to donate?????

You need to donate or post to some of the threads on the board. For Bora20, I see about 10 posts listed there, so that's what got the ability to download. If you choose not to post, then a donation will be required.
And remember, we won't be able to stay online if it weren't for your support. Your contributions are our ONLY means.

Bought an '03 SV650S yesterday, found this forum last night, registered, donated, and am being denied download. I assume there must be something to the need to ost first...may be why the "activate membership" mail said to og in and say HI as a new member?
Well..... HI :-)
My bike needs a left side rearset, but couldn't wait. With left foot on the rear peg, I tried it out in second gear around the neighborhood. This thing pulls like a tractor. LOVE the torque!
I'm already planing a design for a fiberglass fender eliminator. I'm trying to decide if I want an adjustable rearset and adjustable
bars (I can tell that the ower position on the 03 could tire my arms on a distance cruise).
Well...HI again....and BYE for now

Hello fellow SVer,
I just pay pal'ed a donation to this site and I am wondering how long before I will have access to the service manual downloads?
Greabr here, see my post a couple up from here.
No need for a reply - I read the entire thread and I don't feel like getting any mud on me. Don't want to wake up linp, or piss off G_E. Just want to change my oil at 600 miles, which is now 700, and tomorrow will be 800.
A suggestion if it would be considered: there could be more information (maybe a link to this thread) when a user is denied a download from this site. It was clear that I should post or donate, but I left that page with no expectations other than my own. On that page you have an opportunity to establish some expectations and you do not. Most people get bent out of shape if their expectations are not met, so I keep mine low and I am much happier for it. Your offer is reasonable, but my expectations were different at first, I expected that if you had my donation, I would have a service manual.
Don't get me wrong - after reading this thread I have adjusted my expectations, and I admit fault for not searching before posting. Just wanted to offer my humble (and hopefully wise) opinion. (and sneak in another post so that I can get activated).
Be Safe (to all)

BTW, here's a great guide for changing oil. Its not for an SV, so the part numbers, wrench size, location of the drain plug, and amount of oil are different, but the general concept is the same...

I've integrated the donation and download permissions. If you do not wish to participate in our activities, only if you donate via the donation button under the Downloads (http://www.socalsvriders.org/download.php) link, you will be granted the permission to download automatically.
I will no longer have to verify/update permissions manually :)

Is there a minimum donation? Or does 1$ do it?
Edit: oh, nm, I got shady and looked at it ;) you might want to change some of those .com's to .org's on that page. :D
Right now it only validates a $15.00 donation with the Downloads item #002 sent to socalsvriders.com (the defaults when clicking on the button under Downloads).
User also has to be logged in, or have the same paypal email address as their socalsv registered email address.

I'm having trouble downloading Chapter 3 of the 1st gen SVS's. I will get to 12.5mb and it will stop downloading and say it's complete, even though there should be 15.3mb total. Then I try to open it with Winzip and it says somethings wrong with the file. Try to download again and same thing.
Wassup? Is it my CPU? Anyone else having the same probs? I downloaded about 4 other chapters with no problems....
BTW, thanks mods for blessing us with this site, a wealth of info. I contribute as much as I can.... :D

My understanding is this, once you donate you become an active member, the titles senior member etc come as you post and participate on the board more and more. The title changes automatically, or you can simply change your title to one of your own choosing.
There's no chain of command, just people with a common love.
There are moderators of differing levels who are chosen by linp (Paul), linp is the founder of socalsvriders.org.

There is a minimum number of posts that have to be made in order to be able to access the downloads section. If you are impatient or not that participating type, they can also be acessed by donating to the site.

You can get service manuals from sv650.org : http://www.sv650.org/sv_manuals.htm .
Unfortunately they don't have the Owner Manual that I am looking for.

You could contribute meaningful post, or you can help us out and donate 15 dollars to the site. Depending on how fast you need the manual. Oh, and welcome to the site.
What do I have to do to become a active member?

Takes a while to get used to this site for some people I know! I was totally flabergasted on how to quote another member: I kept trying control+c. Anyway If you would like to download the manual or other tasty bits of Sv info simply make a donation, buy a couple stickers or a shirt and you should be golden. Anymore problems and you can go to the C.B. on the home page and ask for help from a moderator. Way better that than creating an entirely new post with EXTREMELY vague hints of your intent. That and you won't look like a moron.
......Remember: There are no stupid questions, just inane, rambling incoherent answers and I for one don't want money to download!

Interesting. I'm sure a moderator will turn on your active membership soon.
Otherwise, I believe it turns on automatically after a certain number of posts.
If you want it on right away, and can't wait for a moderator, try making a donation using the donation link. I believe that automatically gives you access to the downloads.
Or, I could be wrong. I'm just talking out of my ass.

Hello I have the same issue. Not be able to download. But I will participate in any discussion on technical issues. I'm getting a new 2006 SV 650 (blue) next week. Hoping to download a manual so I read it in advance, but I appear to need more than registering.
Is there anywhere else I can download a 2006 SV manual in PDF form?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Normally you can just donate and it will automaticlly have access to the downloads section...
or you could always check out this place where I got my Jeep and other car shop manuals...
You can try Data Manuals (http://www.datamanuals.net) I think they are around $15 PDF format or cdrom sent to your door..
Here is the direct link 2006 SV650 (http://www.datamanuals.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23_26&products_id=303) .. of you could email them and make sure it covers 2006 models....

I'm sure you've thought of it for the site already, but some of the other sites I frequent such as www.bcsportbikes.com get good revenue from advertising from vendors who not only sell motorcycle accessories but contribute greatly to the forums. Everything from local rider training schools to shops.
One other small mention.... I was a bit disappointed to see all kinds of content in the video section where I was expecting SV videos. It might help to put a separate section in the video section for SV videos like they have at http://www.sv-portal.com/forums/ I can't speak for other SV owners but I come to these sites to find mainly info on the SV model and other owner's experience. There are plenty of other websites on the web for unrelated videos, etc.
For anyone else that is looking for manuals and needs it RIGHT NOW, check out: http://www.repairmanualclub.com/
I believe you can download 2 every 24hrs or something like that. Registration is free.
Otherwise you can probably find the manuals on cd on ebay for pretty cheap. ;)

Why don't you take a look? http://www.bcsportbikes.com/forum/ The forums are divided logically into all kinds of interesting topics. Only one tiny banner ad on the top-right barely noticeable), no pop-ups. Not annoying by any means. I agree that some forums are over advertised to the point of annoying.
They're a very friendly community. Been on lots of group rides with them. Never met even one ahole on one of the rides. Anyway, it seems to work for them. My apologies if you found my comments offending.
PS. I've got over 800 posts there.
