View Full Version : Do you like'em tight or fast?

So what type of road do you prefer to ride? It seems like most of us on this board like real tight roads where you barely get out of 3rd gear, but others of us love going for the sound barrier.
Vote and we'll see if we have more Mt. Palomar lovers or Angeles Crest lovers.

40 is tight?

I think you'll find the great majority of us prefer tighter turns than not.
The (extremely) quick handling SV isn't made for a hundred-mile-per-hour wide, sweeping turn. That's what heavier literbikes are for.

While I like both, the SV just doesn't have the lungs for speeds much higher than 120mph. That said, give me some nice twisties in the 40-60mph range that you can really lean on :D

Ah, good point... I barely hit 40 on the freeway.
Which should I choose if I always obey the speed limit, and never felt compelled to drag knee on public streets?

Paul,
Although I know that's not actually the case for you, you're probably just posing the question...
You want tight... For example, going up GMR, I think due to the fact that it's a 2-lane highway, I think the speed limit may actually be 45 or 55 up there. And at those speeds, you can hit some decent lean angles on a lot of corners...
On a road like Ortega, though, I'll do the speed limit (or faster) in the rain... You don't really lean much at all at the speed limit...

Hey, some of us aren't talented/brave/skilled enough to drag a knee  , in my case all of the above.:o
I voted for tight anyway. 3rd gear tight, not 2nd gear tight.
I'm assuming that the knee dragging 40mph hairpin has a 15mph sign on it?

This may or may not be the right place but:
Why the obsession with dragging knee? With today's rubber, pretty much anyone who wants to get down can. It's not as much of an indicator of rider skill as it used to be.
The greatest rider of all time (Mike Hailwood) never dragged his knees. Neither did Paul Smart or Giacomo Agostini.
If you really want to show your stuff, drag elbow. That's a lean! ;)

you can't get your knee down, can you? when you do you'll understand how awesome of a feeling it is to slid your pucks.

Okay, smart asses, lets not split hairs. When I put "dragging knee at 40 mph" and doing "triple digit sweepers" I was exaggerating. If you like tight roads, vote for the knee dragging one, of you like more open roads, vote for the triple digit one. Just stop being dorks.

I voted for the tight stuff, but there are times where I prefer the fast side of palomar. Dragging knee at 40mph is fun, but dragging knee at 90mph is more fun! :D

I like Palomar best, but I haven't experienced all that many beautiful sweepers. Otay is the closest, and sadly, the most fun I have ever had there was going to the olympic area.
Maybe if I had ridden half of the roads on http://www.pashnit.com/ I might change my tune about sweepers.

In fact, Longdong ( ) I am able to go knee down. As I mentioned in my post, which you clearly read, it is not that difficult, and therefore not an effective measure of rider skill.
Is is an "awesome" feeling? Sure, the first few times. So is a wheelie, or a stoppie, for that matter. A slide is pretty sweet, too.
However, in the end, it just feels as hollow as any other stunt, and it is just a stunt.
The best feeling comes from a solid run, technique wise. Be it on the track or the street. Being smooth and fast is awesome, and 99% of the time that does not necessitate sliding your knees on the tarmac.

Yeah, I get what you're saying there. I'm at the point where sliding the puck isn't what I try to do anymore in a corner, it's just something that happens. I'm sure my brother, Longdong, will get to that point soon, himself. Thanks for clarifying your point, though, TFK. We appreciate it.
You'll have to admit, touching your knee down is a milestone for a rider. We all remember the first time we heard the plastic scrape against the asphalt and how excited we felt. The phrase: "getting your knee down" has become a slang term for "going fast in a corner". That is why I used it in my wording for the poll.
Hey, when you scrape your elbow in a corner be sure to post it!!!

Kurt,
A pole is something that is vertical usually holding something up. A poll is something that people vote on.

The best are the roads in Southern Ohio... Very close to what NorCal offers... and the Gap. Excellent with NO traffic...
A great time. Yeah getting the knee down is a great feeling, but not necessary. In a trackday we took, I was riding faster than a fella on a 954 who was knee down all the time... He crashed, I didn't... Moral is... getting that knee down should "happen" not be forced to happen.
But yeah... a good track day is what everyone should shoot for. It gives you the complete rush...

Man, what's with all you people from back East being all "upity" about sliding your knee across the ground? Thank you! We get it. We already knew that putting your knee on the ground does not make you go faster.
Oh, and bwarbiany, from now on when you see a typo or spelling mistake of mine, please just edit my post for me instead of pointing it out. It was funny catching my typos and posting about them like 6 months ago. Thanks.

Hey Kurt, perhaps the word you meant was uppity? See, consonants get lonely when they are sitting out there on the end of a word, so sometimes, they need a friend there to bolster their confidence.
For instance:
hop, hopping
hope, hoping
stop, stopping
dope, doping
Got it?:D

As a matter of fact, Kurt, I have put my elbow down in a turn before.
And, even more amazing, I ended up making it through the turn without even being on my bike.
It cost me a jacket, pants, and a fair patch of skin, but it was still awesome. My crew said that I totally bit it like a pro. :p
Im not into too much speed so I kinda like tight stuff. Decker,Latigo,Tuna. I am able to hang with some of the slower guys on roads like Stunt,Encinal,Schuren.
I spend my days splitting lanes on the freeway and city streets so I dont go looking for too much excitement on the weekends any more. I tend to ride in jeans and sneekers so I dont push it too much.
I have a 650 and a Thou. and like them both for what they were built for.
