Okay folks,
I haven't been on a "proper" ride in quite some time... Including that Ortega blast for the Wrenchfest, riding sweep + all the fog means I still have some chicken strips that are just wrong for my tires... Plus, I'm putting in the springs and need to test those out... And, I won't see the fiancee during the day Saturday so I'll be heading to Glendora Sat night...

So, this means I want to ride GMR on Sunday... Who's with me? 9:30 AM at the gas station on Grand Ave?

Sounds like fun. Is the road open though? I ask because those fires are still raging pretty good.

I can find out... Anyone know where the gate to close it was? High up there or just at the beginning... I.e. before or after that first 15 mph left-hander?

The gate is before.

Sending my fiancee up to the first 15 mph left-hander today, should know later whether it's open...

You're sending your fiance? Like she's an errand boy or something?

bwarbiany
Wed 9/11/02, 1:38PM
She doesn't have a job right now, and lives in Glendora... I don't think I'm asking too much here :D

GMR is currently closed

Any new plans for Sunday? I'm going to be up in Glendora, so ideally something up there would be best... Otherwise I have to wait until something the following weekend to test :(

Gawd, am I going to be able to get rid of these chicken strips before I need new tires?!?!

Oh yeah, there's always the ride over Ortega to the Gathering of the Masses :)

I'm not surprised to hear that GMR is still closed. That fire is raging like a Mo' Fo'.

The ride through Ortega to Gregg's on the 28th will give you a good feel on how your bike is different.

Ooo.. I haven't rode Crest, Sand Canyon, or even in Malibu, Palos Verdes. I'm going to LA Sunday... what else is "up there"? :D

Check out Latigo Canyon (http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/LatigoCanyon.htm)... I drove it once and it was an awesome road... I've gotta hit it on a bike one of these days.

I also "liked" to drive Decker Canyon (http://www.mulhollandraceway.org/roads/decker.html#fyi) but mostly because it intimidated me...

"Decker Canyon Road is the epiphany of what the typical motorist dreads." ;)

I rode through palos verdes on my way up to LA two weeks ago... It had a hell of a view, but that's all that *I* really saw going for it.

That sucks about GMR, if there's any other roads up there to cruise on I'd really like to hit up the twisties.

I don't know much else up there except the crest... And Latigo and Decker are a little far for me (gotta get back in time for church :( )...

But Latigo is a BLAST, a little tighter than GMR, and they recently repaved the top half... And Decker is fun, at least for idiots like me who like super-tight, bumpy roads... Although I'd much rather go UP Decker than down (went downhill the one time I've been there) :)

There are plenty of good roads "up here." :) The Crest and Sand Cyn aren't all that close to roads near Malibu, etc. There are good roads in the Santa Monicas -- Mulholland, Latigo, Piuma, Schueren, Stunt, Decker, etc. And there are good roads in the San Gabriels -- The Crest, Angeles Forest, Big Tujunga, Little Tujunga/Sand Cyn, Bouquet Cyn, Spunky Cyn, Lake Elizabeth, Lake Hughes, San Francisquito, N2, Old Ridge Rte, etc.

(BTW, The Crest is a good starting/connecting road, but don't expect it to be some awesome challenge, nor particularly tight and twisty.)

If I weren't going to be at Willow Springs all weekend I'd be happy to meet you somewhere and show you a bunch of the local favs. Maybe another time?

That would be cool! Since I'm new to twisties on a bike, I'd love to have someone there to guide me through. I've taken the MSF, but not really any training beyond that. Let me see if I will be free next Saturday.

Thanks,

Aaron

What time does "church" start? Let's start early. Latigo and Decker isn't "a little far" for you; it's a "little far" for me ;) Come on, LA peeps!

Don't know if it's going to work out at all now... I'm not even sure if I'll have my bike with me on Sunday :(

Well I'm down in OC and that's not keeping me from going.

You need to free your weekends up more.

So no LA-er's up for a ride? I know you're out there, riding. Come on, I'm not THAT bad of a rider to be avoiding...

So, Kurt, wanna check out the Rock Store? That's one place I keep hearing about but never been.

I'm down for whatever tomorrow. I've been riding like crazy by myself the last couple weeks... I'm ready for a little group action.

I was thinking of doing the crest (cuz I know it), but as I said, I'll go wherever.

Kurt... we gotta get that ride in man - :D

I hit Latigo, Mullholland, etc this morning, but I'd be up for it again tomorrow. Paul, if you're interested in riding some of these roads, Maybe a ride up the PCH, down Mullholland to the Rock Store, back down Latigo to the PCH (rode this for the first time yesterday, perhaps my favorite road in the mountains), and then up Malibu to Piuma, or something along those lines? I'm not fast by any means, but i'm getting faster/smoother.

Earlier is better, since on sunday the CHP is out in force by around 11 or noon.

I'll check back in later tonight, see if anything's going on.

hey Bwarb, I grew up in OC nad used to hit Santiago/Live Oak all the time in my car. I only rode it once on my SV, (Gunked up by a HUGE cruiser rally back in June or July).

My point is, between the sweepers and tight curves you should be able to lose the c/s on yer tires, right? Or is that just shite for riding?

So hey, lets get together and ride the Malibu roads. I've been up there once with a guy who knew the area, but I don't have any idea what roads I was on. I really don't think it matters, it would be fun just to start picking roads and riding down them. Lets get this shit organized.

Count me in. I'll be the slowpoke heading up the rear.

An early start makes sense. How about 9 am? Gives us a chance to meet for a quick caffiene injection first.

There is a Coffee Bean (I think) at 9th (if its not at 9th, its very close to it) and Wilshire in Santa Monica where we can meet up. There we can plan a route - one that includes the Rock Store.

If this works for people, I'll see you there.

DanMan

Sounds good to me - I'll be there at 9.

Are you definately going to show?

I'll definitely show up. If I'm late, it will be no more than just a few minutes. (I told you I was slow)

Paul and Kurt, thanks for making the trek up north. You guys are fast!

The ride was fun, there were 5 of us total. It was cold and foggy down by the ocean, but pretty hot up by the Rock Store. We rode Mullholland, Latigo, Malibu Canyon, and Piuma.

No mishaps, other than Dan's exhaust can springing a leak. I hope everyone made it back home (or wherever they were going) safely.

Seriously though, had a great time today. Thanks again for the earplugs Phil, I don't think I could have made it home without them. Wanna hit up the Crest next weekend?

Later,

far as I know, I'm up for the Crest next weekend, either day. I've heard so much about it, so I'm psyched about getting a chance to ride it.

You guys were gone by the time I got to the Rock Store at around 3 pm. So I had to take a picture on my own bike for a change:

Sorry we missed you David... Thanks for showing me the roads, and leading the ride, Phil :D Those were some tight, twisty roads! Great meeting and riding with you guys. Rock Store, with all the European bikes, is pretty weird... sorta like a snotty version of Mother's Kitchen :p

Hope to ride with LA peeps again soon :)

Paul, I appreciated your hanging back with me - its a lot less stressfull and a lot more fun when I have someone else's line to follow.

I'm sure I'll catch up with you guys in the next few weeks.
