View Full Version : Michelin Pilot Sport tires opinion?

Hi all,
I need to get my front tire changed. I bought a new Michelin Pilot Sport (120/60ZR17) at Millenium Cycles closeout sale and need to get it mounted on my SVS. Can I get this done at any dealer? Are there any good dealers close to Monterey Park?
Has anyone heard any feedback about the Pilot Sports? I remeber reading on the svrider forum that they had a tendency to break loose at inopportune times. Can anyone verify this?
I'm also considering a switch to Bridgestone BT010's or BT020's. My Pilot Sport rear has about half its tread left, so I don't want to just chuck it now. Would it work to put a BT010 or BT020 up front right now in anticipation of putting one out back when the Michelin wears out?

Go for the BT010... I'd say. They typically don't recommend putting two different types of tires on the same bike, but I think for a little while, if you're going to switch the rear to a Bridgestone, you might as well do it... Just my opinion though...

I had a set of Pilot Sports give out on me at the track. Granted it was late in the afternoon, 100 + degree track temp and August at Willow.
I now use Pilot Race for my bike and couldn't be happier. 6 Full track days/schools and they STILL look brand new. Havn't slipped once when warmed up.
I have a set of stock tires I'd be willing to Sell. 200 miles MEZ 4s. Let me know if you interested.
I still have my Sports, but I plan on putting them back on for the ride up to Laguna in July.:D

I put a BT020 on the rear and plan on putting a BT010 on the Front as soon as the POS Metzler wears out. The 20 has been a great tire, no problems at all. So far the front seems to last so much longer that I'm thinking why not throw on a softer tire for a little more grip up front.

sdrider-
That's what I was thinking-- put a BT010 on the front right now, then when the rear Pilot Sport wears out I'll replace it with a BT020.
Would this cause any serious problems? I'm a very new rider, so I won't be pushing too hard on the tires just yet. I plan to ease into freeway commuting on the bike as well as some weekend rides when I have time.
Thanks,

to be honest, I havn't tried it, but there hasn't been a single person i've spoken to that thought it would cause problems. Those two tires are pretty well matched in general, and with todays tires, you can pretty much mix and match as you like.
i've only been riding for a year now (actually just paid my registration ($76 buck$ ouch!)). it's been a really fun year riding almost everyday to and from work, and then at least a few times a month on weekend rides to Julian or Berego.
the BT020 is FAR better than the stock metzler, i've never had a problem with stick and it's alltogether more confidence inspiring. i wish that front tire would run out, i've got almost 10000 on my bike now and it still looks rather good. I squared off the metzler running to work on the freeway everyday. oh well, it was crap anyway.
peace out

SDRIDER,
Depending on how many miles your rear Michelin has left, you may want to simply go with the BT010 at first, and then replace both front and rear (but rear with a BT020) the next time.
Here's how my tires are right now... I've got BT010 front and rear, and about 3500 miles with this setup. Soon, I'm going to be swapping the rear for another BT010 (I'm at the wear bars there). When that runs out (another 3500 miles or so), I'm going to replace both tires, but put a BT020 on the rear, and an 010 on the front.
If you've still got more than about 1500/2000 miles LEFT on your Michelin, go for the BT010 rear (it'll stick better), and then swap front and back at the same time to get the 010/020 combo...
Any thoughts?

The BT010 front is sounding more attractive each day. By the looks of it, my Michelin Pilot Sport rear has about half of its tread left, so I think it should have at least another 3-5,000 miles on it. I think I'll just get the BT010 front now and raplce the rear with a BT010 or BT020 when the rear wears out.

Well, it's that time again. Time to replace my tires. I have the Dunlop 208's on right now, and thats all i've ever run with(besides 207). I was thinkin about going with the Michilin Pilot Sports this time. I got the prices
Dunlop D208. Front $99, Rear $139
Michilin Pilot. Front $139, Rear $229..:(
Thats nearly a $100 Dollar difference for something i'm going to have to replace in 3-4,000 miles. So, the pilots probably arent an option. I have seen them cheaper online, but I cant mount them myself, and im not sure whatever became of the group buy on a tire mounter/balancer.
What other tires have you used, or might recommend as an alternative. I've been fairly happy with the Dunlops, although they tend to like to slide when cold.
I might just stick with the Dunlops this go around, but still thinkin about trying a new brand. Thanks
Look at Pirelli Diablos and Metzeler Sportecs maybe. Both are recommended (http://www.socalsvriders.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=579) all over.

Don't waste your money on the Michilins. They tend to be way more expensive. Just get some Sport Tecs and you will be just fine. At discountmotorcycletire.com a fron is only $80 and a rear is like$100. Don't quote me on the prices, but they are cheaper than the Michilins and they stick like glue. I have gone through two sets of them and they are great. Everyone I know who tries them agree. Everyone can't be wrong....right?

Dunlops are great. But, if you're looking for another brand, I would go with the Battlax 010's. In the 2 years that I had 'em on the TLR, they never failed me once.
I did manage to break 'em loose in mid-corner once when I got on the throttle too hot, but any tire would have broken loose at the speed and angle that I was in.
There's the new BT012's, but I have yet to try 'em. My buddy has 'em on his Gixxer 750 and took it out to the track once...he said they lived (or gripped) up to his expectations.
Btw, the 010's are cheaper and last much longer...and are just as sticky as the Dunlops.

i just put michelin pilot sports on my bike, front & back, and they are the shizz!
i personally love them, they allow me to lean over to my max, I have gone to the very edge of the rubber, and they are confident, in an intersection i hit the paint at full lean going failry fast, and i felt the rear end break loose. on many other tires i might have lowsided, but the super sticky pilot sports saved my life!

The BT010 is awesome.....great price, and VERY STABLE.......it is slow to turn in, but who cares.......once it's leaned over, it is very stable......very confidence-inspiring......
More (http://www.socalsvriders.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=579) on various tire suggestions.
I have had dunlops, Michelins, and Metzler M1's. The Metzlers heat up quick and inspire a confidence that allow me to puch my limits. M1's all the way...if i change it will be to the rensport or renrace. For some good prices check out Motor Cycle Tire Planet (http://www.motorcycletireplanet.com/itemspecs.asp?IID=36)
Great Price shipping is cheap....

I have the 208Zrs, they are fantastic and supposedly have much better range than the M1s...
They look good too...

Never had Michelin's before. They're pricey aren't they?
Had Dunlop 207 and 208 zr's and then M1's on the track. Liked the M1's for the track muy mucho.

Yo Rod,
I wear my tires just about the same, too. Got about 7,000 out of my Dunlop 207s. The funny thing is, my rear tire gets squared off and has plenty of rubber on the sides, and my front tire gets worn down on the sides, and has plenty left in the middle. Maybe I'm doing a 1 mm high wheelie all the time, except for in the corners.

That's funny, my tires wear just opposite. My rear gets worn through pretty evenly, while I still have 1 inch chicken strips on either side of my front. Oh, and I found the Pilots at Cycle Gear for $236 for the set:D

Has anybody tried Michelin Pilot Sports on an SV/S.
I here Bridgestones are good as well as the Metz M-1, but
I have Bib Man stickers and want to use them.
I had Pilot sports on my old SV. Feedback was excellent, but it does take a little while longer than the D208's to warm up.
Once warm though, they hold a line pretty well.

I have the Pilots and I really like them. Hold well in the corners and they provide me with more confidence thant the stock metzlers did. IMO the tire wear seems reasonable for being a pretty soft tire but they are showing wear after 1000+ miles.
No real negatives...
Maybe a little too expensive and since I don't tear it up in the cayons all the time I think I might go with the bridgestones next time.

Ok, so I've been running Bridgestone 020's, and I was happy with this tire. I managed to get 6000 miles from my rear which I just replaced with a Michelin Pilot Road.
(Ok, technically my tire is a Michelin Macadam 100x which for this year has been renamed a Pilot Road. Same tire...and I got a good deal...ordinarily Michelin's are too expensive for me.)
Anyway, the Pilot Road is a sport-touring compound, very similar to the 020. The compound feels the same hardness according to the ol' fingernail test, so hopefully, I will get the same life from this tire as I did with my 020.
However, this tire has a much different profile than the 020. I'd say it has a much sportier profile. The tire edge curls down more than the 020, similar to a Dunlop or something. You can tell by looking at them side by side. I rode like 200 miles today, and it was completely confident and grippy.
I have a "upright" style, so I would barely edge the rear 020 on my SV, but today I rode as hard as I've ever ridden and I still have 1 inch chicken strips on my Pilot Road!!!
AND, I know I was leaning further than ever did on the 020's, and I was easily quicker too. This is a really good tire! I'm so happy with them! I can't wait to put a Pilot Road, or the softer Pilot Sport on my front. (And see if I can ever get a peg to scrape dognammit!!!) At least, I KNOW I have so much more contact patch to work with. Very confidence inspiring tire...
