I play rugby. That can get pretty expensive with club dues, traveling, and lots, and lots of drinking.
I've got 3 kids in private school. I burn the equivalent of two Porche 911 lease payments each month on it.
.....but it's ok....i'll sponge off them in my old age.

putting my lady through college, keeping new shoes on the rugrat, making a house payment, keeping food in the fridge, two car payments, all sorts of insurance, doctors, dentists, make-up costs a f*cking fortune - why do i know this?? - school clothes, art suplies, bills, cell phones, taxes, shit.. i need a third job... im depressed...
but really, when i hear the roar of my SV hitting 9000 RPMs in second gear... it makes it alllllll worthwhile... my real money pit is my bicycles.. i build custom bikes...
DUMPED BIKES (http://www.geocities.com/dumpedbikes/home.html)
thats my money-sucker.. and carbon fiber stuff....
MY HOUSE.
Is it my obsession? Not really. Costs a fucking fortune tho, and the wife seems to really really really really like buying *stuff* for the house. So, that doesn't help.
My other hobbies(which have not had much attention since buying the SV).....
My music and RC boats & planes

Well, my one true love as obsessions go, is any kind of bicycling, but mainly, freestyle bmx.

I've got several obsessions...probably the most common one is music...have about 1300 CD's, now moving into MP3's when my iPod arrives next week! Contemplating some upgrades to the stereo system also, with a dedicated PC juker for MP3's...
I also have my pilot's license and am contemplating going for my instrument rating...anyone who's done this knows that this is a big commitment in time, frustration, and money.
My car USED to be an obsession...1992 325i that I had heavily modified (I feel your pain chukiechz!)...my current car remains stock since I have my SV to modify (much cheaper!).
Getting into art now, of all things...and this isn't exactly cheap either! Through the internet I've been finding some amazing talent!
Upcoming stuff:
- Skydiving next month on my 40th birthday! Woo hoo!
- Introductory aerobatic flying lessons
- Auto racing school to obtain my SCCA racing license

When I used to paintball, I put in a couple grand in that, not including paint. Then I got into racing Nitro RC cars and put in around 2K in that. Since I got my bike, that's where all my money goes now and my other hobbies are just collecting dust.

Hmmm...
Obsessions ...
I don't think I have any, unless worrying about my weight counts.
Hobbies on the otherhand ...
Photography I think is my second largest next to my bike. If all goes well, I will end up w/a camera system that costs about the same as my bike (but the camera will make me money) ...
For a long time I was really into my car, working on it so I could autocross it ... now I ignore the car. (bike is kewler)
I have a list of things I wanna get into but currently can't afford to ... when i can, I'll have to come back and respond ... :)
heh.

Body-Boarding/Surfing.:D Lot's and lot's of it. Doesn't sound like it cost much but come time for a new board, the hole in the wallet get's alot bigger. If you guy's ever have a chance to take a trip, go to Austrailia, especially if you like to ride waves and/or Motorcycles. You can rent them out there for cheap.

the engine and tranny cost me $4500, labor was another $1500. A shop called SHO Shop did the work for me in Huntington Beach. They did all the work for European Car Magazine's project M3. Pretty happy with the quality of the swap. Definitely an improvement!! :)

Swll360, how's this for frustration.
On the way home from Operation Enduring Boredom, we stopped in Perth. I had an oppurtunity to go to Margaret's River on a three day surf trip. I couldn't go, because I'm not good enough to handle 4 meter swells breaking over a coral reef. (They evaluated us before the trip started.) What a shame, I won't be getting another chance to surf in Australia anytime soon.
I've noticed that all the people on this forum ride street, but don't see any riding dirt!!! Haven't any of you tried it? I've been riding dirt for about 3 years now and it's just as much, if not more of an obsession as street biking. Cali is the best place in the US for dirt riders. There's tons of tracks surrounding SD and also lots of desert! mmmmm sand!

Wow! That sounds like a cool system! Anything that costs that much must be cool, right? I always thought photography seemed fun, but I just don't think I have "the eye". That's why I like my digital camera. I can take a shitload of pics, and there are bound to be a few decent ones in there.

Hah! Cool! Are those pics of you?
Underwater basketweaving and being a smartass.
I'd also say cars, but I've never really done a lot of mods to my cars - just drove the shit out of 'em. I'd like to get rid of my Integra (front wheel drive sucks!) and find a nice new affordable rear wheel drive car to auto-cross - my poor ol' Mustang has had it. Recently, this (http://www.kugelkomponents.com/focus.html) caught my eye. :D

I was initially going to start with dirt bikes instead of street bikes. But then I figured I would never ride cause it would take too much effort to drive up and find some trails.

I used to ride dirt. I got my first dirt bike when I was 12, it was called a Honda Cub. Then I had a KX 125 when I was in highschool. This was all when I was living in Kansas.
I know Punkbrad started riding dirt bikes when he was real young and has lots of experience on them too.
Because of the cost of motorcycle riding, it seems like people do one or the other, but rare to do both.
Actually dirt biking can be pretty inexpensive. You can find a decent dirt bike for about 2000, riding gear on the internet or ebay, then gas money and a truck or trailer (or friend who has one) and head out! There's a really cool place that's good for beginners out past Alpine called Lake Morena (Corral Canyon). Also another great place to trail ride is McCain Valley right near Campo and Boulevard. As far as tracks go, the closest ones are Lake Elsinore, Perris, Amago, and Competition Park. These are all within 2 hours of San Diego. If anyone wants more info send me an email and I can tell you websites with more info or directions.

I think I have a decent eye for photography. I have no education in it ...
The system I'm looking at is digital. I switched to digital about 2 years ago ... recently sold my full professional 35mm set up. I just have no interest in it any more.
Digital is nice because you can take as many crappy pix as you want, and it doesn't matter. I have only recently in the past few months really started to enjoy that feature. I was so in habit of making my film count ... now I don't have to do that. Course part of it is simply that the camera I have now takes shitty pictures by default. (grumble)
I forgot to mention one of my other interests is music ... :) Only because it makes me happy ...
I think something I do get obsessive about is reading. I go thru phases of not reading, but when I get into it, I'm really crazy into it, tearing thru books, sometimes within a day or two, sometimes within a week or two (depending on if it's stephen king or ayn rand ...) ...
(mmmm ... music gooood).

Leigh - as someone who has also recently transitioned from 35mm to digital, and is also appreciating the "delete" feature, I have to say that there is still something to having to "make the film count"...a friend of mine edited a book of pics from the Vietnam War taken by communist photogs in the North Vietnamese Army. Apparently some of these photographers had only one roll of film to last...the entire war! Talk about having to make the film count! Some of the pictures are both shocking and amazing...check it out...

I've been thinking about going digital but I'm too hooked on the silver. There's still nothing like film.
What are you shooting with now and what are you thinking about getting? I'd love to get a medium format rig w/ a digital back but just can't justify that kind of cash since I'm not shooting professionaly.

My songwriting. I am signed to a label in Hollywood and am working hard on a CD to be released by the end of this year. It takes pretty much all my time outside of work. When the CD comes out I will spend a lot of time promoting it, getting copies to DJ's, and of course, working on new music and remixes for others. This takes a lot of my money too, and of course, still more time spent learning about the stuff I buy.
Check out my studio gear page (and it needs to be updated!).

I'm really into SCUBA diving... LA has some of the best diving in the world, so that really works out for me. :)
http://sealion.org/tine/pics/?album=cozumel0205
I also have a canyon-carving car that I love to drive to work (since it takes me from PCH into the Canejo valley!) But I put too many miles on it, so I got a motorcycle again... :)
I did the skydiving thing a couple weeks ago. blah. between scuba and riding a motorcycle in LA traffic... it didn't live up to what I was expecting. It was fun, no doubt... but not worth it as far as thrills go. Although... I did get a 'free' t-shirt, so maybe it actually was worth it!

Definitely my WRX. I've always been a car guy -- had 2 Jettas, 2 Miatas (one turbo with programmable ECU, rollbar, full sespension, etc.) and now the WRX.
Weekends are a constant battle between the SV and the WRX. With 2 toys and a girlfriend, time gets tight. This past weekend, the SV and the woman won out.

I started w/some crappy canon that I sent back right away, then went to a 2.1 sony ... dsc something or other, then went to a Nikon Cool Pix 995 ... that thing sucked beyond anything, it was slow and loud and the color balance was shit ... then went to the Canon G1 which I was pretty happy with ... took some of my best pix with it ... that got squished and now I have the Sony M707 ... 5 megapixel, etc.
it's okay. Canon has the superior focusing system and I've never been able to really adjust to the sony being so slow ...
I'm planning to move up to the Canon SLR at some point, I don't remember the number, i think it's D60 or something. It's 6 megapixel. It's not the one I REALLY want, but it'll do ... :) It's 2.5 grand less than the one I really want. :)
Sony has very good optics. If you do not need a camera to take pictures while things are in motion ... sonys can be very good. Canons have good options, not as crisp as Sony, but negligably less ... Sony has a more rounded color balance, although I found it nearly impossible to get ANY color in sunsets ... Canons do blues VERY VERY well, reds are a bit weak ... but do capture color in wider lighting situations ...
I don't know much about any of the other brands. I am of the opinion that Fuji's take good pictures as well ...
All brands offer different options ... some record movies, some don't, some make movies without sound and some with, some have the screen and the view finger, some only have one or the other ... finding cameras with all the things that I wanted, was more difficult than anything else ...
Here is a very useful website for reading up on various cameras (this is linked to the one I want) ...
