OK kids...
I'm looking to do a ride on either Saturday or Sunday this weekend, somewheres in LA or Orange aside form the obvious (otega palomar) where is a cool place to go in the LA area and who wants to go with..?
I saw those pix of that silver SV on "A little road north of LA" on this site, and it looks cool. Like maybe near Santa barbra area, maybe Hwy. 1 or somehting.. i would appreciate any input...
Brizz-ad.
Oh yeah, anyone ever deal with David from Streetifghters By Design... super cool guy...
thanks!
I'm in for a ride this weekend, I may end up cruising to san luis obispo this weekend but if I don't I'm down for a ride in OC/LA. It'd be nice to ride with another yellow bike, I was almost convinced that I was the only one who got a yellow one.

SLO.. how far of a ride is that..?
I was thinkin of a nice coastal cruise if i cant find any cool old roads in the LA area.. any suggestions..?

Tue 9/17/02, 7:44AM
Count me in if you guys go on Sunday. A coastal ride sounds good....maybe up the 1 and then through mulholland...I'm down for whatever though.
SLO is about a 250 mile ride each way. It's a pretty ride but it's 98 percent straight road boredom. I'd be interested in exploring the malibu area, or maybe they'll reopen GMR
Kurt'sSV
Tue 9/17/02, 8:15AM
Yeah, I'm wanting to ride GMR too. If they reopen it I'm going to ride their either Saturday or Sunday.

Tue 9/17/02, 9:35AM
I'd love to tag along too. I'm a pretty new rider, so I'd likely be bringing up the rear of the group. GMR sounds great, or any of the roads in that area. I'd definitely prefer Saturday, since I've got church stuff on Sundays.

OK, Lets do this then..
Leave EARLY Saturday, like meet up around 7am. Lets meet up somwhere along the 405 and go to GMR. If its open. If not lets go find somewhere in LA. Aaron, dont worry about keeping up.. I ride easy too since I've never been to GMR. If someone wants to suggest an alternative, I'm all for it. I think the coast sounds good too.. whatevers clever.

If we are able to go to GMR on Saturday, Aaron (or whoever else would know), where is that Denny's we can meet at off the 57 and the Imperial Highway?
This would be the meeting place for OC people, LA peeps would just want to go the the 76 station off of Grand and the 210

Thanks, Aaron. I figured it would be simple like that.
Now, lets put our efforts into finding out if the F'ing road is open.

Tue 9/17/02, 12:07PM
I can have a member of the "family" head up there on Thursday probably, not much good in finding out before then whether it's open, as it might open later in the week...
Alternatively, is there a way to check this online? Maybe DMV or State of CA web site?
Then, if it isn't open, what do we do? Crest? I'm a little scared of that, since I'm not likely to be doing the speed limit... Someone see something on Pashnit they like?

Well good, Ward, because I wasn't giving you a choice. (j/k):D
there's also a bagel place fairly close to there, it has cute girls working 9 times out of 10.
might be worth investigating
Kurt'sSV
Tue 9/17/02, 4:52PM
I just looked at the Angele's national forest website and the fire that caused GMR to be closed is now 100% contained, so I guess that means all roads are open.
So hopefully Saturday morning is a go!

OK, SO>>>>
Meet at Denny's at the I 57/Imperial Hwy Exit at 7:00 AM, there we will follow Kurt to GMR. . . .
Sound like a plan..???
(Sorry, but I like to get a hed-start on the day) if 7 is too early, we can meet at 7:15... :D
I probably would be up for a ride this weekend too. i guess i'll keep checkin up to see if it's still on. Anyone worried about being at the bak of the pak, don't- i'll do the honors...

Kurt, does that sound about right..?
Im sure the turn out will be decent...
Brad-sounds bitchin! gonna try to get my buddy to come along. his ride's a black nekked. my pants are back-ordered, so i've been riding a bit conservative at Crest. Just sayin' pardon my snail pace. heh heh...

DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDDDDDDDDDDDDEEEEE, 6:40 is early, but I'll be there. I really, really hope GMR is truely open because we will all be surely disapointed if it is not.
Can anyone else check if the road is open? When I looked on the Angeles National Forest site (http://www.r5.fs.fed.us/angeles/) it didn't say it was closed, but it didn't say it was open either. Is their another way to check on the internet (or can someone who lives near it check in person)?

We could take a vote to see if we should go to Ortega or do Malibu (that Latigo Canyon was pretty fun).

Wed 9/18/02, 1:47PM
MALIBU sounds better... Do we take the 1 , 5 or 405 to get there?
Lets meet at 7AM at beach & 405 at the AM/PM on the corner of garden grove & beach blvd. - one half block north of the 405.
LA Riders can meet us .. where at..?

Meet LA riders at Rock Store? Or, at somewhere off PCH north of the 10? I know there's a gas station or something around there before Latigo...
Brad
Kurt'sSV
Wed 9/18/02, 2:00PM
To get to the places to ride in Malibu (for those who don't know) we'll take the 405, to the 10 west, then get onto PCH when the 10 ends.
If we are to meet people in LA, I think that Coffee Bean we met at last week works real well.

MEET AT: The Wal-Mart Parking lot on Beach jsut south of the 405. Theres a gas station right on the corner, and a Carl's or McDonalds or some grease-soaked fast food joint.
From there we can shoot up the 405. - - Tc5479 if your comin from Long Beach, thats not too far of a back-track..
Kurt'sSV
Wed 9/18/02, 2:32PM
Okay, if you want to meet off of the 405 at beach, the best place would be the Mobil gas station on the SW corner of the intersection.
Beach Mobil (714) 841-5059

So for people wanting to meet there, I guess be there at 7 (yes AM).
For people wanting to meet us up north in the Santa Monica/Malibu area, if you know of a good place to meet off PCH, post it.

There's Chevron at Sunset and PCH, right across the street from Gladstone's, about 2 miles from the10/PCH exit. Could we meet there at 7:30?
How long does it take to do a run up and down Latigo? I've got to be back by 9:30, so just trying to plan things out.
Aaron
Kurt'sSV
Wed 9/18/02, 3:02PM
That Chevron looks like a good place to meet you (and others from up north), but I don't think we'd be able to get there from OC by 7:30, probably closer to 8.
Latigo CYN isn't very long, so if you just wanted to go up and down it once you could get home pretty quick, but by 9:30 would be pushing it.
bwarbiany
Wed 9/18/02, 3:17PM
Aaron,
If you went up Latigo, and then went over Kanan-Dume road to the 101, you could probably make it by 9:30 or thereabouts... Seems a little short of a ride though, doncha think?
Brad
Kurt'sSV
Wed 9/18/02, 3:21PM
I found a good Chevron for people to meet at who are in the LA area (or north of the Mobil meeting place in Huntington). I don't know if this is the one Aaron was talking about because I don't know where that one is. But I do know this Chevron isn't far from Latigo CYN. 8:00 would be a good time to be there.

mistermiata13
Wed 9/18/02, 3:35PM
Kurt,
That looks like the Chevron just down the hill from Pepperdine, closer to Latigo. The one I mentioned at Sunset and PCH would give us a little longer to ride together up PCH. Either one is fine, although I guess I'd rather meet up earlier than later, i.e. the one near Sunset. First ride jitters and all...
Brad,
It would be a rather short ride, but I want to get in some experience so I don't mind. I'm bound to learn something with all you guys around me. That's my theory anyways.
Aaron

Wed 9/18/02, 4:12PM

Hey everybody:
When do you think you will get to the Rock Store? I'll be coming from the San Fernando Valley and can meet you there? By the way, after you do Latigo why not do Yerba Buena Road? It's a great run even more twisty and longer than Decker and Latigo! Yerba Buena is the first road north of Neptune's Net on PCH and then ends into Mulholland. This would give you a good combo of tight (very) turns, large sweepers and some long straights with some nice scenery. There is very little car traffic or bike traffic for that matter on Yerba. You can check it out on pashnit.com.

I don't know what time we'd be swinging by the Rock Store (even if at all, I think the place kinda sucks). There is another road I was on last weekend, it maybe the one you were talking about, that I liked a lot too. You can get to it off of Malibu Canyon Road.
mistermiata13
Wed 9/18/02, 6:07PM
That might be Piuma Road that splits off of Malibu Canyon up near the 101. I've yet to ride or drive it, but it sure looks twisty on the map.

Wed 9/18/02, 8:33PM
Guys,
Don't know if i'm gonna make this one yet. The road was Piuma that we rode off Malibu Canyon..if you keep going down the other side, it hits a less exciting road, and it'll take you back down to the PCH (we turned around).

this map has pretty much every road you're looking to ride on it...I guess Malibu Canyon and Las Virgines are one and the same. I've heard really good things about Stunt road, looks like you can hit it from Piuma, and then take that back up to Mullholland
Hunter
Wed 9/18/02, 10:38PM
Stunt road is an absolute hoot! Not very long, but plenty fast and only a few patches of rough pavement. The best way to get there from PCH is to go up Piuma to Schueren, then take that up to its intersection with Saddle Peak and Stunt roads. I much prefer going up Stunt road, though, from the the Mulholland intersection. Although going down allows you to put it in neutral and practice bike control.
As for Yerba Buena...I wouldn't recommend it to new riders. It's fairly long, VERY technical and, though it wasn't SO bad last weekend, it can be VERY dirty. Personally I love it and think the SV is one of the best bikes to take that road, but I know a lot of experienced riders who have broken bones trying to show YB who's boss.
Has a meeing point/time been determined for this weekend? I wouldn't mind hooking up with some of you if you can be found. If I, as a new lister, may be so bold as to cast my vote, I'd like to meet at the Chevron at Sunset/PCH. From there it's a nice warmup to take Topanga to Fernwood to Saddle Peak to the top of Stunt.

Hey, I would like to see if I can hook up with you's guys this Sat. since I missed the other 5 SV monsters last weekend at the Rock Store(See post about "who left card on my bike"). What about everyone meeting at the Rock Store(central to any of the cyns in the area) at about 9:30. This way everyone can do a little riding first depending on where you're coming from and those that need to head home can, while the rest of us meet at 9:30 and coordinate form there. I live in the basic area(not that I'm volunteering to lead mind you) so I'm fairly familiar with the area as well as other places that y'all may not have been able to ride yet. One of my riding buds(40 yrs experience, Honda Hawk driver) seems to know just about every road in Ca. so maybe I can get him to come along too?
Does that seem workable for eveyone?

Well everyone-thanks for the ride. I had a blast up until clipping that Acura. Fuck me!! Just goes to show, if you're not familiar with a particular curve: SLOW DOWN! I suppose it could have been a lot worse. I got away with a couple bruises, a bent rim, broken rear brake ped, broken footpeg plate, and misc fairing scrapes. Glad you guys made it home safe. Also, very glad that you're O.K. Troy.
Enjoyed meeting some of the SV bretheren, and hopefully next time we can have an uneventful(more fun) day on the roads.
We felt(Paul, Tom, and I) badly that the ride wasn't as fun for you all as we had hoped. Los Flores can be a bit of a bitch heading down. We probably should have started on some "more friendly" cyns.
Again, glad everyone's O.K., and thanks for including us.

Sat 9/21/02, 6:03PM
Well hey, everyone goes down. It's just a matter of when. But everyone doesn't hit another car coming the other way. Troy, you've got me beat on that one.
Maybe I shouldn't lead next time 'cause I feel bad that two of the guys fallowing me bit it today. (Punk)Brad's little spill was nothing (his bike didn't even stop running), but I feel bad that his can is scratched up, along with his new carbon fiber wind screen. Now I wish I would have been leading Troy down Los Flores so he could have fallowed my lines around the turns.
But I will have to say that the most fun I had was when I was chasing Craig's friend, Paul, up Piuma (though I wish he would have gone faster down Los Flores).
So shit happens, bones heal, bikes get fixed and chicks dig scars. When people weren't falling off their bikes I was having a great time today. I hope I'll get a chance to ride with ya'll some time soon. See ya next Saturday at Gregg's!

Well gentlemen,
I had a blast, even cruisin PCH home.. haha.. i got a few good wheelies, and Kurt busted out with a fine wheelie himself.
Ward is PAF.. punk as f*ck.. he blasted that little yello SV all over the place, i look forward to riding with him again..
The only damage is the bent handlebars and the scratched can (no biggie) the best thing is all of the rash on my tank buffed out.. the fairing got a sticker over the scratch so you cant see it. :D
TROY - glad you are OK, if you need help in the follow up (insurance stuff) , ask around here, there is a lot of experience among the riders here .
All in all it was a good day, i actually had fun, and i learned a thing or two.. SLOW DOWN being the first one.. dont htink becuase Kurt is leading that you have to follow him.. hes fast, im not, therefore i will hang back, rather than go down faster than a duck on junebug.. or a bum on a bologna sandwich..
Thanks again to all the riders, and it was cool to meet craig and his pals, very cool dudes indeed.. lookin forward to LA ride again, jsut a bit slower..
you all be safe, and Troy - check e-Bay for a rim, you'll get a deal..
Hey guys,
we had a crazy ride, and I'm really glad everyone's OK. I guess the spot in line between Kurt and myself is just a hazardous place to be! I'm going to be a much calmer rider on roads I don't know, or at least I'll try. Looking forward to next weekend!
