Who's planning on going to the Gathering from the L.A. area? I'll be leaving from Torrance, however, this will be the longest ride I've ever done and it would be nice to have some company...

Several of us from OC are planning on going down the 5 and then over the Ortega highway to get to the 15. While this will take longer than taking the 91 out to the 15, it is more fun.
I was going to ask the same thing... I'm in westwood, so a bit further for me.
I'm showing 95 miles to get there as is... I wonder how much taking the Ortega will add? I guess I'll have to find out!
So, I'm thinking:
West LA (with stop in Torrance?) south to the 5 via the toll road to the Ortega to Murrieta.
Anyone interested?

Tine,
I'm in West LA, and i'm interested in riding out together..

I'm near the downtown Los Angeles area so west LA isn't too far for me. I would be interested in meeting up for the ride.

Some of us were talking this weekend and we thought 9:00 would be a good time to meet at the Chevron off the 5 on Ortega. I'll post it's address and exactly what you'll do when you exit the freeway later this week.

I'll be leaving from Redondo Beach. If anyone else is leaving from the southbay just let me know where and when to meet!

I'm definitely coming over the Ortega, and I think 9 AM is fine for a meeting time... Hopefully the weather over the Ortega will be better than it was for that wrenchfest...
And I'm not riding sweep on this one ;)

For the LA guys, maybe a meeting place in the 110/91fwy area would be best so we can catch those coming from South Bay, West LA and Downtown.

Great meeting place...just off the 110/91 on Artesia Blvd in Gardena...

That sounds great! Early morning donuts and milk for me (not a coffee drinker)! Anyone else want to meet up, say 8:15?

That would be kinda out of the way if we wanted to go to Ortega, no? (I'm not real good on geography down there, so correct me if I'm wrong...)

Shouldn't be out of the way for you, Tine. You'll just take your freeway of choice to the 110, then head south til it hits the 91 and head for Krispy Kreme. Although not the most direct route, I suggested the 110/91 because it would be convenient for those in the South Bay and from most of LA. I'll actually backtrack a little to get there, but not a big deal to have the opportunity to ride with the group down to Ortega.
Short version: It's not out of the way.
Aaron
P.S. This all assumes you're coming from the West LA I'm thinking of.... Anything west of Hollywood.
OK, sorry. I looked at a map. Very helpful... :) I was thinking that junction was many miles to the east of where it actually is.

8:15 @ the Krispy Kreme in Gardena sounds fine by me. It's close to the freeway. See you all there unless anyone else has another idea for a meeting place.

What route are you planning on taking to Gregg's? Since it is a long ride, and I am still a newbie, I was thinking of taking a direct route...like the 91 to the 15. I'm also concerned about the numb hands thing since after about 1/2 an hour on the freeway, I can't feel my hands...
Anyone know how much longer the Ortega route will take?

I wish I could go...I'd have to ride down like 400 miles then ride down to San Diego from L.A., and THEN ride all the way back. Should I join IronButt now and go for it? I was planning on working on my CD this weekend...but I so wish I could go....just not sure if I am up for all that riding.

Mike,
From the Chevron just off the 5 at the Ortega, it's about an hour. And from the sounds of things, we've got a wide range of abilities on that ride, so you won't really need to worry about being a newbie... Some twisties will make you feel good :)
Brad
PS - You need to ride more often :D

Brads correct, twisties are sooo much fun, and they build confidence! i will be pacing myself bigtime after laying ti down 2 days in a row last week, you can hang back with me.. Im gonna cruise it like a Goldwing.. well maybe not that easy.. but dont be intimidated by "Ortega" jsut ride it and you will have a curve obsession that ride... you'll see..:D

Oh, don't get me wrong...I like the twisty bits...like 'em much better than the freeway! It's just that this will be a long ride, and not sure how I'll be feeling by the time we get down to Ortega. Was actually thinking about hitting it on the way back...

Hi all,
I'm up in Pasadena and I can grab the 110 south to meet up at the 91.
Later,
Tim.

Dude, the ride from Redondo Beach to Ortega isn't that far. I don't see what you're :-s about?

I generally find that I don't get sore as much through moderate to severe twisties.... you end up moving around a bunch more and generally don't get numb.
I thought about just doing Ortega on the way back, but decided it would be better to get it out of the way. If I don't do it in the morning it's too easy to not do it on the way back.
As for pace... I made a decision about driving and riding a little while ago. Given a choice between life and death, I choose life. Given a choice between accident and no accident, I choose no accident. Sooo... I'm definitely going to be riding my own ride. This may keep me in the group... it may not, but I'm not going to ride in such a way that it feels dangerous to me.

Yeah, no accidents on the way to the party would be a good thing. Ortega is the road I know best, but I'd better watch it because I have no tread left on the sides of my tires. There will probably be plenty of cars on Ortega by that time of the morning anyway.

Okay, here is exactly where we are meeting on Ortega.
Chevron Gas Station
27112 Ortega Highway
San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675-2702
Going south on the 5:
Exit Ortega.
Turn left from the off ramp.
This takes you over the freeway
The Chevron is just past the Freeway on the right hand side.
Going North on the 5: (if there is anyone from that direction)
Exit Ortega
Turn right from the off ramp.
It's right fucking there.
So be there at 9:00 am
We'll take a nice ride over Ortega w/o any misshaps. Then it's through the dirt pit that is Lake Elsinore, onto the 15 South, and we'll be at Gregg's before you can say My Ass Is Sore.

How about 7:30 somewhere in Brentwood (Wilshire exit off of the 405)? We could do a West LA and parts northern meetup at the Coffee Bean at San Vicente and Barrington.
To get there... 405 to Wilshire west. Wilshire over the Veteran's Parkway, right onto San Vicente (it's the first light once you're past the freeway.) About 1/4 mile down is the Coffee Bean on your left (Barrington is the first light on San Vicente.)
We'll leave around 7:30 to get to the Krispy Kreme in Gardena in time.
I was trying to think of something closer to the freeway, but couldn't come up with anything convenient in that area (including on Santa Monica...) This does have the advantage of having a coffee bean, a starbucks and a peets all within a block or so. Of course, there's also the 2 minute ride for me factor... so if someone has another suggestion?

That's a little backtracking for me (i'm at the 405/10 interchange, pretty much), but i'm fine with that meeting location.

I didn't reserve for lunch but I may join the group anyways at Ortega and the 5 FWY. I'm leaving from Orange by Jamboree and Chapman if anyone else is leaving from this area. I may bring a jixxer friend, too.
Here's a look at our probable route out on Saturday.
Let me know if you want a print out of this with maps (http://www.socalsvriders.com/temp/gatherla.pdf) and I'll bring a copy on Saturday (to the first meet point only... I'm not sure if I'll be able to carry them past that point.)

Nobody worry, I know how to get to Gregg's and I'm sure I'll have help from some others too.
First post edited with map and map file. 2 posts up has rough estimates of time/mileage and directions. Lemme know if there's something wrong, it's kinda hard to keep track of all the suggestions.
(edit)
Brentwood meeting place/time added to map on first post.

Just curious, is it really necessary for LA-ers to meet at every 15 min stop? Is LA that unsafe to travel alone? ;)

Tine,
I'd bring along the full directions just in case, but it sounds like we only need to find our way to the Krispy Kreme in Gardena, and then Kurt/etc will lead us the rest of the way. I'll see everyone (well, at least Tine and crashgirl) at the Coffee Bean in Brentwood at 7:30
