Well for the second time I've gotten up early to watch the US Soccer team compete in the world cup... and for the second time, they lost. I must be bad luck or something.
But it was a hell of a run and a great game to watch too! It nearly broke my heart to see Reyna's open netter from midfield go wide. You definitely got the feeling that the only way we'd get a ball in the goal is if Kahn was off flirting with some fan or something.
Oh well, it has been fun to watch the entire tournament: Senegal, S. Korea, Japan, and all the other countries that weren't supposed to be as good as they were. It certainly looks like Brazil is a lock to win the Cup, but that's why they play the game....

Well, I stayed up to watch the US/Mexico match-up, but I just couldn't swing 4:30AM today. Too bad, sounds like we gave it our best shot, and I still have S. Korea to root for! But at least there are probably a lot more people interested in soccer now - I know I am! It would be nice to see the US get behind this truly international sport! It is one of the few sports today that you can really rally behind your country's flag.

I have really enjoyed watching the Korean players! They are so fast and well trained. They never stop running!! Watch for them to give Spain a lot of trouble in tonight's game (11:30)

hum
not sure how "amazing" is old guy talk
just the idea of watching a game, specifically on tv, and reacting to it as "amazing" that sort of boggles me ... like i said in another thread, i don't do spectator sports ... so i'm totally lacking understanding as to how people can get into this stuff.

I can totally relate to what you are saying...and I have resisted spectator sports for most of my life for the same reasons you have...however, I had never really watched a soccer game before last week, so I was quite surprised at how I got really into it. Plus World Cup soccer is a nationalistic sport so people are rooting for their country...not much outside the Olympics where people do that.

I think the important part of spectator sports is that you have some emotional attachment to the team (or sport) you are watching. As Mike said, World Cup soccer and the Olympics are so widely watched because it's about supporting your country.
My addiction to football (specifically the Packers) is that was one of the only things my dad and I bonded over during some hard times in our lives. We're now actually friends and not just father/son... NEXT! ON A VERY SPECIAL TWO HOUR DAWSON'S CREEK... SCREW YOU ALL FOR LAUGHING AT ME! ;)
But seriously, I have similar reasons for liking all the sports I do. It's like hearing a song that makes you feel good about something.

Hmmm ...
Sentimentality ...
I don't think I've ever had it explained to me quite like that, but I guess I kind of understand that ... (give me a few days, i'll mull it over and will figure it out) ...
I'm not particularly nationalistic ... if I watch sports, I wanna see fights, crashes, bloopers ... etc etc ... I can watch Rally Car racing because it varies enough to keep me interested (and their accents make me laugh like insane) ...
I know that I get REALLY uncomfortable when I'm around people who yell @ the TV during games ... i'm not sure why, it's probably an association ...
I don't resist it, sometimes when other people are watching, I'll it and watch, but I end up getting up and doing other stuff ... I did go watch Mark play hockey one night, and that was pretty kewl ... I got into it for awhile ... it took me about 25 minutes before I lost interest and starting playing w/my bouncy ball ...

S. Korea was defeated by Germany this morning...so ends their historic run...no Asian team has ever made it this far in World Cup soccer! But what I'm really bummed about was that if they made it to the finals I was going to go down to Koreatown and watch the game on one of the THREE Jumbotrons they have set up in this park.
I heard that for the last game against Spain, the park was absolutely packed, and after Korea's victory, there were scores of young Korean girls lifting their tops in celebration (this is NOT a Korean tradition). Is this a great country or what? :D

I knew there was a reason I was rooting for Korea this morning!! DAMN!
I'm German. Now I feel bad that they won against Korea. :)
Anyone know if any German girls are participating in this here? :P

I've got some German in my blood as well and I'm happy both ways! Did you see some of the photos on the Yahoo! FIFA slideshow? Some hot German chicks and some hot Korean chicks!! I've got that international jungle fever!!

A PACKERS fan, Jimm? I knew I didn't like you for some reason...
BTW did you hear about how PETA wanted to them to change their name, since it was related to packing meat?

Yeah, those PETA jackasses have been trying that for a few years now. Do you know what their suggested the Packers use for a name instead? The Green Bay Six Packers!
Ya know, because it's much better to encourage acoholism in young kids than to eat meat (which is a natural part of human development).
I suppose your a 49er's fan huh? Can't take the fact that the 49er's have been owned by the Packers for the last decade?

Nope, Bears fan... Of course, the Bears have been pretty much owned by everyone for about the past decade (did well last year though, the "Monsters of the Midway" seem to be coming back).
