Taking part in track days make the sport of riding a motorcycle so much more fun (and so much harder on the pocketbook). Have you been to the track?

One of these days, we've gotta rent out a track for ourselves. What is it, like $2-3k? Divide by 20... :)

Is there an experience requirement for track days like there is in some of the racing schools? Or can you buy your bike and be out on the track the same day?

Paul,
The norcal list thought about doing that... The only problem is that there's a lot more involved than track rental... You need to have med personnel on hand, have liability insurance, have corner workers, etc. The norcal group just did one Monday though, at Buttonwillow, through Keigwins@TheTrack, a group in Sunnyvale, where it was like half SV riders. Cost ended up being $175/each, which includes a lot...

Golden_Eternity,
You can buy your bike, track-prep it, and be out on the track... Conceivably this could be done in a day :)

That's... kinda scarey. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be out there with people of my skill level (or lower).

Well, the usual recommendation is that once you have the ability to ride without thinking about where the controls are, the simple things of how to lean, etc., that you're fine on a track. In fact, many people think that it is a good way to work on your riding technique, because you're going through the same 15 corners over and over and over... Honestly, if I had leathers, I'd have been on a track long ago :)

Think about it this way.......
You go and ride Palomar or Ortega on any given weekend. You have cages, squids, inexperienced riders, dirt, rocks, double yellows, cops, spilled oil and occasionally some anti-freeze in the road to contend with. All it takes is one of these things to jump up and bite you in the ass when you are laid over in a blind right hander.

At least on the track, you have eliminated 6 of those 8 hazards. On top of which, you have EMT's waiting to come patch you back together should you go down. Where would you feel more comfortable? You see a lot more riders get up and run to their bikes after crashing on the track than you do on the street. After crashing on the street most are lucky if they can even pick themselves up off the pavement.

Well if a Socalsvriders.com day at the track is organized I'll be there as long especially if it's at the Streets and under say $175.

I'd be down... assuming I had the cash on hand (which wouldn't be for another month or two, at this rate).
