Hello everyone,

I'm planning a trip from San Diego to Palm Springs and I'd like to avoid using freeways as much as possible.

From cycling trips, I know that there are some cool roads that go through the Anza-Borrego desert and surrounding hills towards Palm Springs. Can anyone suggest a good route that goes through the desert/mountains?

I am thinking about a route that uses the 371 and 74. Are those good roads? What about fuel? The ride is just long enough so that I'll need gas when I'm in the middle-of-nowhere. Do any of the towns in that area have fuel stations?

Thanks in advance!

Maybe you can join them.

Suggestion (from 4/26/03 Palm Springs Ride):

276 miles total
Leaving La Jolla Mobile 9:00 a.m.
go south to the 52, then east to I-15
north on I-15 to Scripps Poway Pky.
Scripps Poway pky to the 67
67 to Ramona, then 78 to Santa Ysabel
turn onto the 79, go to the 371
take the 371 to the 74
take the 74 into Palm Desert
take the 111 into Palm Springs for lunch
take the 111 through Indio to the 86
take the 86 to S22 through Borrego Springs
take the S3 to the 78 into Julian
take the 79 to I-8
from there we'll probably split off
