a friend of mine in the 'biz shared this info with me, thought i'd pass it along. since spring is in the air & the squids are out in large numbers, here's some places to keep an eye peeled at:
malibu - mulholland drive- speed traps, where it's 40 mph, do 40 mph
- pch- the hill that's right before pescador beach, headed to decker/encinal, there's a radar car right below the ridge & it's a laser one & he's very good at hitting helmets w/the beam.
- kanaan dume rd- chp is cruising this a little more than they normally do.
the other thing they are looking for is large groups of sportbikes shooting the backroads-when the bikes come down, they will split the group & go for the bikes at the front of the pack. they're hiding behind groups of trees & state park signs.
101 frwy from the 405 past kanaan dume, the chp have some white camaros & white patrols out, they're hard to spot & they're doing the speeding crackdown. they are also looking for large groups of sportsbikes (because the some local bike clubs have been stunting after bike nite & during the daytime on the weekends on the freeway)
118 frwy from the 101 to the 405, again the speeding crackdown, white camaro & white patrols, be especially careful from topanga cyn rd to just before the 405. they are sitting on the side & on the exit ramps entering the frwy.
Approx times for max enforcement: malibu & pch- sat 10 am on to sun nite. 101- fri to sun & wed nite 7 pm - 12 am(101 to hollywood for motorcycles because of bike nite). 118-weekday during comuter times & fri-sun.

Damn! There goes all my fun! Well Thanks for the heads up at least. If I get a ticket now it's my own damn fault!
Great thread idea!
Here are the points where I usually see cops and their handheld radars (in San Diego)
Eastlake: On H street, coming from Eastlake westbound, just before Bonita High School. At that point H street speed limit drops from 45 to 35, and they are there usually in the mornings (9 to 11am)
125 South: They usually stay at the center divide, everyday I see at least two cages being ticketed
San Diego Airport: Three consecutive times I saw police cars in front of the coast guard gate pointing their radars to oncoming traffic. (I think one other time they were at another gate, a little closer to the airport)

Damn...street stuntas are making the cops pay extra special attention to us. BAD.
You could probably get out of a lot of these tickets if they're just basic speed law tickets....but you can deal with that when it happens. ;)

LATIGO CYN: Going up from PCH about 1/2 mile up the canyon a bike officer waits in a concealed driveway with his zap gun. This is more often on Sunday afteroons than any other time. Besides, this is either the beginning or the end of your canyon "session" so go easy at this point anyway :-D

Kanaan Dume Road...definitely a hot spot for CHP...they'll wait in a turn out for people zoom by...I saw this firsthand on the rented R6.
Sierra up in Santa Clarita was mentioned at Pashnit as being a notorious speed trap.
Careful on Kanan road too in Agoura...the cops have a very low tolerance here.
There's a CHP station at Lost Hills on your way to Malibu Canyon Road off the Los Virgenes or Lost Hills exits...another place not to speed until you're safely in the canyon and can see your front and back with no interruptions to the side. Watch those turnouts.

Speed traps have to be the biggest waste of time/money that there is, as far as paw enforcement is concerned. They dont set up speed traps in places where there is a high amount of accidents, or complaints, but in "hidden" locations, as to better catch the speeder, and get the ticket revenue:mad:

I was in driving school a few months ago and the instructor was a former CHP officer. I was usually spacing out in this unbelievably boring class but a few things did stick.
First, the number one reason for officers giving tickets is for speeding. Speeding is considered to be the hot button for cops because the greatest % of accidents/deaths happen when people are speeding.
Second, regarding speed traps, he said you really have to be careful on the I15 North and South coming to and from Las Vegas. If I remember this correctly you also have to be especially careful on the 15th of each month on the I15. They focus more resources on that date. I am not really sure but I think this is true for every highway. So you want to be careful on the 5th if you are riding on I5 and on the 8th if you are riding on the I8....
Maybe somebody can actually validate this for us but I am only passing on what I was told...

oh, and as for "theories" my uncle is a retired LBcop...he says that if you can stay at no more than 10mph above speed limit, most DECENT cops will ignore you...we all know that there are lots of indecent cops out there tho don't we ;)
i also heard that on the freeway cops pay more attention to speeders in the fast lane that speeders in any other lane.

They're also creaming it in on Fanita and Weld just off of Grossmont Cllege Dr.
Bike cop was turning left as I approached from opposite direction coming down the hill on Weld,he barely got his feet to the floor before he whipped out his radar gun like a six shooter to try and get me for speeding.."tough shit dude"..I was doing 39mph. :p
Funniest thing is that in his haste he nearly dropped his bike coz his feet had barely touched the ground and the bike hadn't stopped moving. :D :D

I'm knocking on wood here, but I've never had a bad cop incident. Every time I was pulled over, I was treated with the same kind of respect I gave the officer.

How many cycles did you wait before running it? If I need to make a left and I'm really paranoid, I just bust a right hander and then make a u-turn.
Though, doesn't the law allow for you to run the light if you've waited a couple of cycles and that it's safe to do so?

I get residential alerts every morning of everything that happens with a 1 (or2?) mile radius of my house. At least once a week, typically between the hours of 10-12 or 2-4, there are several citations on Calle Cristobal in Mira Mesa. Highly suggest to not speed on this road!!

A couple of mornings each month I see a motobike cop facing west down Fountain Ave at the intersection with N Olive Drive. Nice enough guy...always waves..and doesn't seem to care about 45 but if you're really cooking around the curve in the road about a quarter mile before him, you'd probably get snagged. Funny thing, since Ive been commuting to SD Ive noticed an intersting point. Theres alot of hills from here to there, so at the top, I can see all the lanes of traffic clearly for a few miles.
I would say 80% of the cars are in the left 2 lanes, regardless of how many lanes there are.
Doesnt look much faster from that angle.

Just to let everyon know...At the end of each lane at most intersections there is what is called a "Bike Loop" this loop detects metal objects. The "Bike Loop" is extra sensitive for the small metal signatures of bicycles... motorcycles should not have a problem activating the loop so the light will change. The secret to activate the "Bike Loop" is to pull ahead of the limit line with your front tire resting about one foot ahead of the line. Loops are on there way out in most progressive cities. The loops are being replaced with "Video Detection". If you look on top of the light standards and see a white camera you are probably looking at a Video Detection camera. Let me know if this helps.

CHP pulled me over on the 5 in San Diego county last year. I was in the # 3 lane passing somebody. The CHP officer wanted to let me know that he wasn't happy about my passing in the #3 lane. "People are not expecting to be passed on the right" The officer let me off with a warning.
I really wish people would drive slow in the slow lanes. So now I know that even if the slow lanes are empty.....I can't pass the slow people in the fast lanes.......

What state is HE from? It always seems strange when I hear this rumour that you aren't supposed to pass people on the right. I think it dates back to the time when motorcycles had the throttle on the left, so right handed swordsmen could slash at anyone who tried to pass them from behind... I could be wrong about that though.

Pass on the left? Many CA drivers are brain dead..they drive at any old speed in any old lane...it forces slightly faster drivers to have to slalom around them. If people really did drive more slowly on the right and pass on the left I think there would be fewer frustrated drivers, less road rage, less 'surprised' motorists who are too brain dead to realize they're blocking passing zones...etc.
The worst is when I would go to San Jose..some people would drive side by side on a two lane road! Meaning, they're a moving roadblock. So annoying...

Most are totally unaware of their surroundings, much less signs on the road that say slower traffic keep right or the mysterious logic that's implied. SUV women seem to be the worst offenders as well as lawn mower crews and f350 4x4 driving cowboy hats. I would be all for making it illegal to drive in the left lane unless passing. Actually it's already a law. And it should be illegal to pass on the right. That way there would be another reason for me to be cited while passing the non-sentient bastards driving in the left lane at 54.3 mph. Idiots.

The California Driver's Handbook says pass on the left.
California Driver Handbook - Laws and Rules of the Road
TRAFFIC LANES
CHOOSING A LANE
Traffic lanes are often referred to by number. The left or “fast” lane is called the “No. 1 Lane.” The lanes to the right of the No. 1 lane are called the No. 2 lane, then the No. 3 lane. etc.
Example of numbered traffic lanes
Drive in the lane with the smoothest flow of traffic. If you can choose among three lanes, pick the middle lane for the smoothest driving. To drive faster, pass, or turn left, use the left lane. When you choose to drive slowly or enter or turn off the road, use the right lane.
If there are only two lanes in your direction, pick the right lane for the smoothest driving.
Don’t weave in and out of traffic. Stay in one lane as much as possible. Once you start through an intersection, keep going. If you start to make a turn, follow through. Last second changes may cause accidents. If you missed a turn, continue to the next intersection and work your way back to where you want to go.
CHANGING LANES
Changing lanes includes:
Moving from one lane to another.
Entering the freeway from an onramp.
Entering the road from a curb or the shoulder.
Before changing lanes, signal, look in all your mirrors, and:
Check traffic behind and beside you.
Glance over your left or right shoulder to make sure the lane you want is clear. Look for vehicles or motorcyclists in your blind spot.
Be sure there is enough room for your vehicle in the next lane.
BICYCLE LANES
A bicycle lane is shown by a solid white line along either side of the street, four or more feet from the curb. The white line will usually be broken near the corner and the words “BIKE LANE” will be painted in the lane. Do not drive in a bike lane unless you are making a right turn and are within 200 feet of the corner or other driveway entrance.
You may park in a bike lane unless a “No Parking” sign is posted.
Pedestrians are not allowed in bike lanes when sidewalks are available. Drivers of motorized bicycles should use bike lanes carefully to avoid accidents with bicyclists.
PASSING LANES
Before you pass, look ahead for road conditions and traffic that may cause other vehicles to move into your lane.
Never drive off the paved or main traveled portion of the road or on the shoulder to pass. The edge of the main traveled portion of the road has a painted white line on the road’s surface. Passing other vehicles at crossroads, railroad crossings, and shopping center entrances is dangerous.
Pass traffic on the left. You may pass on the right only when:
An open highway is clearly marked for two or more lanes of travel in your direction.
The driver ahead of you is turning left and you do not drive off the roadway. Never pass on the left if the driver is signaling a left turn.
When passing a bicyclist, pass on the left. If you are in a narrow traffic lane, wait until the traffic clears in the opposite lane before passing a bicyclist. Do not squeeze past the bicyclist.
Right Wrong
CARPOOL LANES AND ONRAMPS
A carpool lane is a special freeway lane only for buses and/or carpools. You may use a carpool lane or onramp if your vehicle carries the minimum number of people required for the carpool lane or you drive a low-emission vehicle displaying a special DMV-issued decal. Motorcycle riders may use designated carpool lanes, unless otherwise posted.
Signs at the onramp or along the freeway tell you the minimum number of people required for the carpool and the hours the carpool requirement applies. The pavement in this lane is marked with a diamond symbol (◊) and the words “Carpool Lane.” Do not cross over double parallel solid lines to enter or exit any carpool lane except at designated entry or exit places.
Vehicles towing trailers are typically not allowed to use carpool lanes because they must drive more slowly and are usually restricted to the right-hand lane.
CENTER LEFT TURN LANES
A center left turn lane is in the middle of a two-way street and is marked on both sides by two painted lines. The inner line is broken and the outer line is solid. If a street has a center left turn lane, you must use it when you turn left (VC §21460.5[c]) or start a permitted U-turn. You may only drive for 200 feet in the center left turn lane. This lane is not a regular traffic lane or a passing lane. To turn left from this lane, signal and drive completely inside the center left turn lane. Do not stop with the back of your vehicle blocking traffic. Make sure the lane is clear in both directions and then turn only when it is safe. Look for vehicles coming toward you in the same lane to start their left turn.
When turning left from a side street or driveway, signal and wait until it is safe. Then drive into the center left turn lane. Enter traffic only when it is safe.
You may drive across a center left turn lane.
END-OF-LANE MARKINGS
Freeway lanes (as well as some city street lanes) which are ending will usually be marked by large broken lines painted on the pavement. If you are driving in a lane marked with these broken lines, be prepared for the lane to end or to exit the freeway. Look for a sign to tell you what to do (i.e., merge right, right lane must exit, etc.).

make it like germany.
Drive as fast as you want. And if you approach a car from behind and there's no lane to the left, the car in front of you has an obligation to move the fsck over.
Yeah, I learned the hard way....autobahn, doing like 210 kph, and a freakin' Porsche rolls up on me like I was standing still and just LAYS ON THE HORN.
I was like WTF....I'm *passing* a slower moving car, just wait a sec.
Talked to someone who lives there. Apparently, if you can't make the pass before another car gets to you, that's a big no no.
And blocking the fast lane is more heinous of a crime than running a red light.

Yeah I agree...some people are passing in the left lane..but they're passing so slowly that they block faster cars...it's bad for traffic flow. It's also lame when people going half your speed pull in front of you to make a slow, tortured pass and then take their sweet ass time to move over again when they could have just let you pass first.
I agree too that we should make the traffic laws more like Germany....I wish 'failure to yield' and passing laws were better enforced, or enforced at all. Cops here tend to focus on speed and ignore the idiots driving in any lane at any speed. These 'blockers' as I call them unwittingly create a slalom course and it creates fertile ground for frustrated drivers and even road rage....and of course these slow morons set themselves up to be surprised and upset because they're going to invariably piss off faster drivers who will pass them at varying degrees of 'politeness' to make their point...none of this helps traffic flow.
A few times I've signaled for 'blockers' to get the F over and sometimes, they actually do it. DUH...and semi trucks...what's with the gigantic semis blocking the 2 right lanes? They should almost never be in the middle or left lanes unless there's some kind of freeway split coming up or something...

This reminds me of the time I was coming home from work around 11pm heading north on the 5. There were 4 cars driving essentially side by side blocking any and all means of getting around them. I think they were doing approx 60-65mph. As soon as it looked like one car was slowing down or another was speeding up a bit I got in line to try to move past, but they always managed to back off or speed up enough that I could not squeeze by (and this is in my tiny '88 honda civic). I swear this went on for at least 10 miles. I was going nuts. I couldn't believe that there actually were people as brain dead as this around. The only thing I could imagine was that they were actually doing it intentionally, but I really don't believe that was the case. That was certainly one the top ten most frustrating moments in my life

Mojo yeah this happens every day on the freeways because people are driving at slow speeds in the fast lane..while it usually doesn't last this long, it happens all the time because the slow drivers are being passed by slightly faster drivers in the slow lane, creating a block...and it's also annoying when a slow driver takes a 'fast' line through traffic through all the gaps, but doesn't make use of the gap to actually get the F out of the way...and instead just gets out in front to block traffic in the fast lane...grrrrr

On Wed night, my friend and I went down PCH right through that bolsa chica area. I was going a reasonable 80 :D and him and his stupid ol' cbr decided to fly past me at 120. Of course I see a pair of headlights turn on in the dark blackness that is the Bolsa Chica wetlands parking lot... the cop pulls out and gives me a leer as I engine brake back down to 50, and guns it to nail my friend. So yes that's an evil spot. Even if theres no helicopters, it's a dark area and practically impossible to see lurking patrolcars on the right side (when heading north).

Cop apparently was in that group of cars, didn't see him, and he said I was doing 65 in a 35. Thought I was screwed, but an old 5.0 Mustang went hauling ass by as I was pulled over, and the cop just dipped out to catch him.
Prick, that guy was...no way I was over 45 real speed, I wasn't out of 2nd gear on my GS500...

Went to downtown Huntington Beach 2 sunday's ago. Never going there again, cops waiting for motorcycles. Friend and I got tickets for our license plates not mounted correctly. There were around 10 moto cops just circling around. Beware of HB (nice moto cop though), let us off easy.

In my best opera voice NAUGHT GUIILTEEEEEE!!!!!
After doing some research about how the helo clocked me on PCH, I decided to fight my ticket. Went to court today and only one ummm....officer showed up. When the commisioner asked where the other officers were he just let out the classical ummmm...uhhhh, then said motion to dismiss in the interest of justice your honor. Thats right Beaatch! Those guys broke the rules when they timed my distance traveled which constitutes a speed trap.(cvc 40801. & cvc 40802. (a) (1) Its funny how they try to intimidate you into pleading guilty and then offer traffic school (cha-ching!). Also I was denied a TBD which is also wrong (cvc40902(a) (1). Was I speeding YES, 85mph maybe but the way they gauged my speed was against the law. It cost me 2 days of work but it was worth it to call them on thier bluff. Now off to race! On the track of course.:D:p ;)

On that topic, the CHP has been running a small cessna airplane over the 241 toll road for at least 1 day out of the month for the past 3 months or so. Heading south, right after the toll booths, in the flat land before santiago canyon road. Usually about 4-5 ground units working for the spotter. Major operation.
There's also a unit that camps out the toll booths at the top of the hill, but I think that's more for the people without fast track.

Dang...they charge people to use a toll road and then they ticket people benefitting from less traffic when they're finally able to open up? Gahhhh. Thanks for the warning tho DT...

Yesterday me and my homie big jersh rode around a bit on our way to pick up our buddy Bear and go to Beach Burger Bike night. we had 30 mins to kill or so. so we get down brookhurst to adams in HB, and josh says "hey lets go down that one road between adams and wilson" (placentia road where it dips down and goes back up by the park and estancia high school – it’s a short little high speed curve with a nice hill and a little “S” at the end) i say "naw, there always cops there" he said ive never seen any there, so I say “we can go, but im doin the limit.” Since I just got stopped a day before yesterday for my license plate mounted under the undertail.
so we go up adams, turn right onto placentia there and he bolts it. i sit up and casually stroll down the hill, as soon as i see the turn apex, i see josh takin off like a rocket, and the friggin moto-cop was sure enough hiding off the one side street aiming his Lidar gun at josh over his shoulder, he then re-aims the lidar gun as josh makes the turn and then starts up the bike. about the tim ehe pulls out off the side street, i go past, fully doin the speed limit...
i think for a second. he may stop me for my licence plate or something, but the cop flew past me. josh never even saw the cop. he kept right on goin at 65 thru the 40 MPH zone and was gone. when i got up and around estancia high, i see josh off the bike, the cop is yellin at him and i go past.
the rule is when one guy gets pulled, the rest go to the next turn out and lay low till the ticket is over.
so thats what i did. the cop told josh that he first caught him at 43 in the 35, but then he re-aimed and as he left the 53 to the 40 zone, he was at 61 mph. so josh got popped for 61 in a 40. his first ticket in 10 years for speeding....
fuggin cops are such royal douchebags. sportbikes are MAJOR targets, it sux..
anywho, anyone familiar with the area knows. theres aways a cop at the bottom of the hill by Estancia park, so go the speed limit.

Signage on CA-14 from Mojave to north of Cal City claim that they're experimenting with photoradar. I looked but saw no actual cameras, at least not like the ones I've seen in Phoenix.

405 South around Van Nuys...every day some dickhole cops have a speedtrap on the area there because traffic flows better and picks up speed there. They hide on the right side of the road behind the walls there.
Some Los Angeles area stuff I have been noticing as of late
sepulveda southbound past olympic every now and again a bike cop hangs out under the freewayoverpass behind a parked car. in the mornings inbetween 8-9ish
overland ave southbound half block past national right before the hill goes down in a driveway of an apt complex (next to a blockbuster) a bike cop likes to chill and nab people. same time area in the mornings.
Culver city in general is pretty notorious for cops and traffic violations/speeding etc.

Saw a different silhouette the other day - There are usually moto cops with radar on Topanga Canyon Blvd by the 118 (at the bottom of a steep downhill). They usually sit in the shade on their bikes.
This time, from a distance, I saw what looked like a cowboy cutout lawn ornament by the side of the road. As I got closer, it was the motor officer, standing in the shade, motionless with his arms down, left shoulder towards traffic, radar gun in his right hand (hidden from view). Motorcycle was parked out of sight of potentially speeding traffic.
Very trickey. Be careful out there.
(BTW, I understand why the try to slow traffic down in that area - it is listed at 40 or 45, but cars can get up to 70 or so just coasting down the hill - and there are residential feeder street, so +30 is too fast).

Forest Lawn Drive off the 134. LAPD leisurely clocking you with speed gun. Hidden from view under the trees (north side) and occasionally lurking in the bushes (driveway access-cemetery side). Commuter traffic primetime, mornings or evenings. My theory is when short on quota, they stake it out for some easy pickings. I drive this stretch every workday. Tickets I've seen average out to about one a week. Speed limit 45.

+1 on Forest Lawn.
The curves make it easy for cops, people like to go fast since there are long stretches between lights, and coppers are at the cemetary periodically to assist in stopping traffic for funeral processions.

North Durfee Ave, between Rosemead Blvd and Santa Anita Ave in South El Monte.
Just had a ticket dismissed because the chipper did not show. However, This stretch of street is not part of South El Monte so the Traffic Engineer there does not survey it. SO this should be under Los Angeles County, I went to the Public Works, Lights and Taffic and the Civil Engineer there could not find any E&T Survey for that road in there records. Since this has a 40MPH speed limit and is Radar Enforced the non exsistant E&T survey make this a speed trap. The Civil Engineer is going to get back to me if anything shows up.

Mulholland, between Las Virgines and Cornell - as you're leaving Las Virgines, heading towards Cornell, after the first 180 degree left hander as it rises into the hills, 2 cruisers in the bushes with a high tech looking gun (probably ladar) pointing down at the road below - the straight as you're approaching the 180 degree turn.
You'll never see them until its too late.

From the 118, travelling south on Balboa before San Fernando Mission right before Target, the last house with a big palm tree in front(right side). The copper sits right behind the palm tree. You can't see him until it's too late. He's there daily, I go by everyday.

Saw one off of a road here the other day, I'll edit this post and let you know where abouts when I think of it.
It was the road joining Mira Mesa Blvd, where it ends at the west side, and the road goes south west....if that helps.

San Diego area...52 Westbound. As you head westbound from Santo Rd., going under the 15 fwy, slow down, as the chippies are in the center median, smiling with radar guns pointed.

- N Verdugo Blvd @ Los Encinos, when coming and going to Glendale Community College for two days in a row now I have been laser beamed by a motocycle cop sitting in the little park around 5pm. The posted speed limit is 25 around the turn, I've slid by him in the high 30s and he still didn't give me a ticket! Thanks occifier! Guess he's waiting for somebody going to Pro Italia on a fast red quacking Duck.

Soledad Canyon in Santa Clarita..heyooge speed trap. Nice road with few interruptions in some places. Drivers like it, but easy pickin's for cops. Couple spots have a posted limit lower than the 85th percentile on the E&T survey. If you get stopped here, have yer case heard at the county seat. ;)
not sure how often this happens but figured I would give a heads up
west LA - (ocean) Gateway blvd heading north east, about two blocks before hitting pico a bike cop occasionally hangs out in the church, and you can't see him till you pass.
around 745 in the morning, that road is wide open and people sometimes gun it to pico so makes sense he was there.
