Hello
this movie ruled - totally recommend it, especially if you are Brad Pitt fan
intriguing story and I was way into it
funny in parts (not sure it was suppose to be though)
even though you know the ending the anticipation of it was tops
I am going to see it again and definitely buy it on DVD (I rarely do this!!)

Proud to say most of the film was shot on the island of Malta, if you look closely you'll see me in the ranks as an extra in most of the fights :)

I liked it, especially because there was no real good guy. The only sympathetic character was Hector.

Yeah, that's one thing I noticed too. I kept questioning myself throughout the whole movie as to what side I was rooting for. I liked Achilles because he was the great warrior an all, but I wanted to side with Troy at some points too.

Anyway, really awesome movie.

Sorry, I thought the movie sucked. Bad dialogue, who wrote that crap. Their was no information that Achilles was the son of the gods, he was invincible except at his heel, hence the body part" Achilles heel" The Greek's at that time in history were the most aggressive nation trying to take over the world as they knew it. Helen was just an excuse to invade another country, similar to modern society.

Ever since I read the Illiad, I had wondered about how cool a movie it would be. Now I know that it would be total shite.

The movie didn't have anything to do with the source material. (The Trojan horse was NOT in the Illiad, it was in the Odyssey)

And to add insult to injury there was a reference to the Aeneid at the end, probably put in there by the screen writer to subtely piss off the audience.

And the "epic" fight scenes somehow were totally boring.

And Menelaus' acting was hammy beyond comedy.

And when did Orlando Bloom get so cut?

Brad Pitt did an OK job making Achilles more of a three-dimensional character, but he was given nothing to work with.

While this version of the legend has a LOT changed from the Illiad, this was a more realistic depiction of what the war would have been like if it did actually take place (though I doubt there were really a 1000 ships launched. Probably more like 100). A direct translation of the Illiad to screen would have been kind of goofy and sci-fi.

If you go to see the movie with the attitude that there is no way it will be able to hold a candle to Homer's Illiad, then you will think it sucks. Don't go see this movie with that attitude.

Truth be told, I saw this movie. It had both positives and negatives.

With respect to the true battle, outside of books and stories, there were not nearly as many involved as the movie shows.

There was a documentary on either A&E or the Discovery channel the day after I saw the movie and it described how there were no more than 5 - 6 thousand Greeks, and that Troy was home to no more than a 2 thousand man Army. The city of Troy was nothing more than an extremely rich Trade city famous for its access to spices and silks and was never known as a POWERFUL city. In fact, the documentary told of how Troy was rebuilt over and over again because the city was repeatedly destroyed.

The movie also played with the characters way too much. Manaleus (spell check that) was a warlord, a fighter and far more respected than Agemenon. It said that Agemenon was killed by his wife because of his lust over Helen. Paris was believed to be abandoned at birth and brought back to troy later in life. Hector never really cared for Paris... I can continue...but will stop there.

What I'm getting at, is I hate Hollywood. They take history and turn it into entertainment.

Well, if most history weren't so boring to begin with......

If the movies were boring, we wouldn't be going to watch them.
We have the true(r) info on the Discovery and the History channels.
I do watch those channels a lot, to learn about history and what has happened.
I do go to the movies for entertainment.
If they don't entertain, they don't get my $10.
I think the Discovery Channel and the History Channel should keep doing what they are doing.
I think Hollywood should keep on doing what they are doing.

Perhaps had I gone into the movie with the attitude that Hollywood knows what I like better than I do, I would have loved it.

I didn't go in with any preconceived notion of the film other than the scene with the Greek flotilla being extremely cool, as I had not yet read any reviews. I knew it couldn't be exactly like the Illiad because adding the gods would be foolish and would add too many characters

I didn't set myself up for disappointment, I was legitimately disappointed. People I know who hadn't a shred of knowledge of the classics declared it as being roundly boring.

Neglecting the source material aside, it's still crap.

Someone did mention a funny thing about Troy: You know the bit where Achilles is training with Patroclus in the ancient greek ruins? Shouldnt the buildings have been a bit fresher back then?

I also object to Hollywoodization of stories. By using the word 'shite' are you giving away English roots TFK_in_mass?

Just saw this movie last night. :tired:Man im beat.

I think it was a good movie, with some scenes being on the cheesy side. But overall it was a damn good movie. I rate these movies in comparison to gladiator and troy stole the number #1 spot on that list :p

All history and geekdom aside, it was extremly entertaining. Now i want to read the book, anyone lend me a copy? :)

i saw the movie and hated it. The dialogue was horrible as well as the camera work. I think the director should be shot. In every fight scene the camera would jump to one of the people watching every five seconds to show their reaction. After 3 hours of that i was ready to jump off a bridge.

Anyway....thats just my honest opinion, take for what its worth.

Oo, can't wait to see this one with the wife so she can drool over that Brad guy. Yeah, so it's a Hollywood movie...I go to the theaters to be entertained.

Or there's HBO's reporter chick who goes out and interviews people coming out of theaters... She asked someone "so when do you think Orlando Bloom will hit puberty?"
