View Full Version : Ride idea... Something different, Saturday 10/26

Hey, I was thinking about making a new ride that none of us has really seen (I was on Pashnit today :D )... I figure, based on the various climates, that this would best be done in a few weekends... I.e. after the desert cools off, but before we see snow up north in the mountains...

Something like this (maybe reverse, it's up to you all)...
Ortega east from I-5, meet up with SD folks at the 15.
Continue on Ortega (74), which becomes the Palms to Pines Hwy
Stay on 74, or turn north at Hwy 243 near Idylwild. From here, we can go through Rim of the World Dr, or the roads near the Joshua tree, whatever is closest... This will take us up near Big Bear/Arrowhead...
Then, head east on 138 (or is it 136, or 18) across I-15 to the Crest. Follow this down to Pasadena...

For more info on these roads, go to http://www.pashnit.com

Sound good to anyone? Weekend of the 26th?

That actually sounds really fun. I have a friend coming into town that weekend and we were planning on borrowing my bro's bike to go for a ride on the 26th. I think he would enjoy something like this.

Okay, we'll have to get started early... I'm thinking Saturday the 26th, meet at the start of the Ortega by 8:00 AM... Be across the Ortega to the 15 by about 9-9:15ish in case anyone from down south wants to meet (Gregg, Bill?)... I'll look into getting some decent maps, because from there I don't know if any of us know where we're going...

If anyone's thinking of coming from a little farther north (i.e. Pasadena, Ventura, that area), you're more than welcome to head down to my place on Friday night and crash... I got some comfy Lazy-boy recliners :) Just as long as you're not allergic to cats... Then the end of the ride should be pretty darn close to you...

This sounds like fun... Time to start researching :)

Aaron, this will probably be an all-day proposition... We'll probably cover some decent (200+) mileage just in twisties...

Hmm...

I recall mentioning something like this Wed. night...

Power of Suggestion is COOL!

Count me in (assuming SWMBO is in good shape and hasn't made any plans for us already:D ). Perhaps I should get a gel seat before then, too. My ass is starting to hurt at the mere mention of 200 miles. Or was it the bit about Crisco Twister?

Yeah, and Gregg, Bill and I were talking about it last weekend after Palomar... So there! :)

I actually was kinda spurred to do this after reading about Pashnit's trip through Alaska... I'm thinking when the day comes that I have a son, after he's gone through all the hoopla of riding dirt when young, getting his street license, etc... I'm gonna buy two V-Stroms (or the equivalent in 25 years) and go on that trip :)

Okay, I also checked weather for Big Bear, and Big Pines... Looks like Big Bear should be cold enough that people trying to go boating on the lake (or Lake Arrowhead) will be discouraged... Sissy Californians... But also it should be warm enough (especially by the time of day we'd arrive) that we don't have to worry about any of these roads being closed for snow...

Here's the trip, as I see it from looking a lot closer...
Ortega (74) to Palm to Pines Hwy (74 still)
North at Hwy 243 through Idylwild and to Banning. West on 10 until we find whatever heads north...
38 North up to a little east of Big Bear Lake.
18 west until we hit 138, heading through Crestline.
138 across the 15 to Angeles Crest
Angeles Crest to Pasadena
Limp our sorry sore butts home and sleep :)

is this gonna be OK for new riders?

bwarbiany
Fri 10/11/02, 1:47PM
Chuck...
If you're comfortable with a few things, it'll be fine.

1) Freeway riding. You have to get back from Pasadena somehow, right? Plus you'll need to get to the Ortega, and there'll be a little stint on the 10...
2) Long distances. This is going to be a high-mileage ride, compared to most on this board... We're talking at least 200 miles (probably closer to 250-300) of twisties. You need to make sure you've got your mind and body ready for that. I remember when I first started riding, I used to get all kinds of soreness from the riding position. Plus, when you're new, and thinking about simple things like shifting & accelerating & braking, as well as how to tackle the next corner, it can get really mentally taxing.
3) Gonna have to do the 600 mile service before you go... I don't want your engine getting frazzled from extending the service interval too long. That initial service is the most important one you'll ever do, because when you're breaking in an engine, there's all kinds of crap in there. However, a twisty ride is the best way to finish off the break-in process (lots of varying RPM's).

I'll leave it up to you whether you think you're ready. Obviously, you're under no pressure to keep up with any faster riders. We'll wait at all turns/etc to make sure the group stays together. All newbies are welcome. I just want to let you know what you're getting into first :D

Brad

Fri 10/11/02, 1:52PM
hmm, hopefully I'll have hit 600 miles by then. So I guess we'll see when the time gets closer. I've never been on twisties, so I cant say how confident I am on them. I guess I'll see how my riding goes the next few weeks and go from there. Thanks.

If you guys are going to go on the Ortega.......east of Lake Elsinore............... please go slow and becareful in the populated areas...........

That stretch is notorious for fucked-up dumb shits bubbas...........and dogs...........running across the road..............

The last time I went through that section.............I saw 2 dead dogs...............

........and an individual suddenly ran in front of my bike............. I was probably going about 60 mph.............

.......grabbed the brakes hard............... and someone must have been watchin over me........cause I managed to stop in time......and didn't go down in the process......................and this was when I still had the stock springs and the Mez4s..... ....

.....and of course........... bubbette went about her bussiness.........like she didn't do anything wrong.............

....good luck.......

I totally want to go, but I think I'll have to bow out of this one.

I don't know if its psychological or if my bike got tweaked in the fall, but I don't feel too comfortable on it. I keep feeling like the back end is getting squirrely under braking, even when using only the front brake (since the foot of the brake pedal is gone). I've also noticed myself going wider in corners because of my nervousness. I'll have to get the bike checked out this week to see if its just my jitters from the spill.

So yeah, I won't be going this weekend.

Actually, I do wish I could take my fiancee's uncle's brand new VFR-800... I want to try that thing out... And it's a V engine, just not a twin... But I guess I'll just stick with the SV if we only allow twins...

Count me in for this ride! I have done it several times before and it is one of the reasons why we have the best places to ride.

I will be at the Ortega Highway Chevron a little before 8:00am, so look for me there, because I will be the trailing rider during the ride!

Wow that looks really long. Maybe we'll want to cut some of it short once we get out there.

I put new tires on last weekend, but I will need some tread left for the track day next Tuesday.

bwarbiany
Wed 10/23/02, 11:04AM
If we end up needing to cut it short, we can decide at Banning whether to take the 330 or the 18 up from there, instead of the 38... That'll cut a big chunk out of the trip, but then again, on Pashnit they say that's a really great stretch of road...

The longest I've done is a 450 mile day, with about 200 of it being highway... I was in pain afterwards, but it was worth it... This will be much less highway overall, which helps when you move around in the seat a little into the turns...

I guess to answer Chuck's question from previously though, I think this probably a daunting ride for a newbie... The offer still stands if anyone who's coming from Pasadena or thereabouts wants to crash friday night down at my place, you'll basically already be home at the end of the ride, and won't have to wake up quite as early...

Yes, it is a long ride, but well worth it. I am planning on making Banning my turnaround point and doing Big Bear on another day before the snow falls. One ride that needs to be done is Hwy 247 from Big Bear to Lucerne Valley. I drove it once in my car and was awed by it! That is truly a road designed for the SV!

Yup we made it back okay, but I'm still cold. My brother wasn't mad at all 'cause he know's Jake will get the bike all fixed up for him. Kris got more worked up over his dogs eating his pack of cigaretts than he did his bike being scratched up.

The weather for today's ride sucked huge. Even if Jake and Ward didn't crash it still wan't much fun because I was frozen and scared of crashing. Our dilema with Ward's tire made the whole trip more interesting. But in a perfect world, today would have been dry and sunny and no one crashed. But this world is far from perfect.

I was in the back of the pack (bad news, that means theres someone infront of me, people in front of me always wreck) and Jake (kurt's friend) was in front of me. it was a left turn with a guardrail on the outside and only about a foot of shoulder between the lane and the rail. Jake got uncomfortable in the turn and ended up swinging wide and got into the guardrail. I saw this start to happen and my first thought was don't be like punkbrad on out malibu ride and follow the guy in front. (we both ended up wide on a turn and ended up using the bikelane on th eopposite side of the road) O I started to turn the bike towards the yellow line. At first it looked like Jakes bike was going to stay parallel with the guardrail so I calmed down a bit and stopped trying to get towards the yellow line so much, then as I got closer to jakes bike the thing started rotating and coming off the friggin guardrail. by the time I got there the bike was perpendicular to the guardrail and blocking about 90% of the lane. As soon as I figured that I wasn't going to get around the bike I stood mine up and slammed the brakes, for a second I thought I would be ok, but then the front tire slid for the last 6-7 feet and I ended up t-boning jakes bike, givine me a flat front tire, bent bars, nice bar shaped indentation in the tank, scratched up mirrors and turn signals, one of which is bent up at about 45 degrees and now it looks like my bike is waving .

oh yeah and I skinned my kneecap, didn't rip pants or do much besides hurt the ankle a bit. It was fairly low speed byt the time we collided.

ward, glad to hear you're ok. although, give it a few days-injuries from jarring motions take time to surface. when i crashed in latigo with you guys in sept, two days later my back starting aching. as far as your bike goes, what's up? where'd the crash take place, and did you have to tow it far? bent rim or forks? the impact must have been pretty hard for your tire to deflate.

yes sir setter sir...

Ward needs to be in the front. hes fast, and he will sniff up your ass and let you know it.. just wave him by, even if you're a tad faster, becuase he posseses evil powers that will make you crash if you are in front of him... however, when following him, dont take his lines.. he accidentqally went wide on a decreasing radius turn, and i followed him right into the opposite side of the road, in the bike lane, i think he was trying to kill me... hahaha

be safe out there..
