I've been watching ebay auctions for deals on R1s and even 900SS, but now have decided I want a first year model Green TLS instead. There is NO WAY I'd get rid of my SV though, it's just too awesome of a ride.
Let me know if you know of any green TLS's.
thanks

This is kind of a long shot, but here it goes...

I was/is (not sure on the right verb here) the original owner of a new 1997 Green TLS, now owned by a close friend of mine back in Indiana. Said friend has owned the bike for a year or so, and is now looking to sell it for around $5K in order to purchase a new R1. I know Indiana is guite far, but I may be driving out and back in November and could assist with the transport. Nothing definate yet, but I could at look into it if you're interested. Let me know...

Oh well, thought I'd try. (My friend really helped me out by buying that TL from me when he did).

However...

You might want to check out
www.argocycles.com (http://www.argocycles.com )
and look in the showroom. The have a green '97 in your price range that appears to be in "out the door" condition (they usually sell salvages). They're on the east coast, but they can ship bikes anywhere. Good luck!

Couldn't find a green one. But I did drive home a sweet Red '97 TL today. It's so totally awesome. Here's a pic.
Cool factor intensified given the TwoBros exhaust, braided front lines, new Dunlop 207s, and only 9,500miles.

Sweet! You're building up quite a collection of bikes, there. ;)

Sweet!

I like that color!

How does one of those ride compared to an SV?

I've heard they're notorious "tank slappers"

What is a "tank slapper" anyways? is that when your handlebars whack your tank in a crash, when you downshift going hella fast and your balls (if you're a dude, of course) slap the tank, or something else entirely different?

a tankslapper is when your handlebars go from stop to stop (back and forth) usually resulting in a crash and usually happens at high speeds... there was a good video of one here before... I will see if I can find it.

Very nice bike there Michelle. Thanks for riding it to the BBQ. Guess I won't be passing you on the rides anymore :). I put the pic I took here (http://www.socalsvriders.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album81&op=modload&name=Photo_Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php) along with the other BBQ pictures.

The TLS is bigger, badder and meaner than the SV without a doubt. It freakin hauls ass. Totally unbelievable. The HappyBus still rules but now I can at least compete on the freeway and straights. Should be cool on the twisties too but not the super tight ones. The acceleration is unbelievable, I went to 105 without even trying. sounds kickass too. It's truly a machine. It's notorious for wheelies and whatever else, but ride with respect for yourself, others and the machinery and all should be fine.
My general ride plan:
SV- commuting M-Th, tight roads like Palomar or Mesa Grande, group rides on unfamilar roads, the track

TLS-commute on Friday, less tight rides/familar roads like the 94, cruising

GS - hell I don't know, first I need battery that old muscle bike

Wish I could of actually made the BBQ, Gregg and Paul were the first to check out my new ride. hee heee I just can't stop smiling.

thanks, it is a very bright red that is for sure.

On the knee front- not a goal for me.
I can see it happening at the Streets on a few of the turns on the SV at some point, but whatever. There are other aspects of riding I care more about. :-)

How 'bout wheelies? Are you gunna do wheelies with your new TL?

Amidst my jealousy, let me congratulate you on the purchase of an absolutely bonkers sportbike. TREAT IT WITH RESPECT!

You may find that the TLS is actually a hoot to ride on the tighter stuff, as it has a shorter wheel base than the SV. Once I made peace with mine, roads like GMR and Latigo were motorcycle nirvana. Having said that, please allow me to make the following recommendations:

1. Make sure all of the recalls have been completed - the '97 had quite a few (tank leak, ignition box, etc.).

2. SCRAP THE STOCK STEERING DAMPER!!! I'd repeat that 7 times if it wouldn't be so annoying. Really tho', I can't stress how important it is to get rid of that thing and throw some money at a good quality replacement (Scott, Ohlins, Hyperpro, etc.)

3. Drop the forks in the clamps at least 5mm, possibly as many as 11mm, depending on how you ride. You'll find this makes it much easier to keep the front on the ground when exiting corners.

4. Scrap the stock ECM/ECU (black box) and get a Power Commander II - there's no such thing as throttle control on this bike without one!

5. When funds permit - get rid of the stock rotary damper and get an Ohlins.

Of course, don't take my word - there are plenty of websites & message boards related to this bike which provide a lot of good information regarding set up and mods.

Happy Wheelies!:D

p.s. Get a 2nd job - you may need it to pay for tires, chains and sprockets!:p

Sweet! Maybe a custom paint job is in order.

That bike looks like an SV on steroids.

Sas
you trying to be a buzz kill or what??! J/K
I made sure all the recalls were done and the stock steering damper is off. yeah that was sucky on other one I test drove.
Thanks for the tips. Fun comes with a price I guess. I don't ride that hard nor will I be putting on the same kinda miles as done on the SV so I'm not sweating things. My boyfriend is a bike mechanic (worked on these) so whatever I need, when I need it will be addressed.

no wheelies for me, it's bad for the bike don't you know
guess I'll eventually join an internet tl club or 2 at some point

Boring! What did you get a TLS then for? If you just wanted something big to vibrate between your legs, I can think of something a lot cheaper.
